Hi, I am new to this forum and have started getting a lot of pop-ups when I use my browser. I have tried removing items from my installed programs but have had no luck.

Welcome to the forum..

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

I can help you in the cleaning if you don't want to reformat but I can't promise that we'll get you 100% clean.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post. MrC

I will do what you think is best. I don't really want to reformat and reinstall but if that is the best solution I can do that. Please let me know all the actions I should take. I am computer programmer (above average knowledge of computers) who has become very lazy with my home computer thus now I have gotten these trojans. Thanks! Paul Kirkley

If you don't format and we clean it up....you can't trust the computer for for banking, personal business, credit card transactions, financial transactions, etc. It would just be a general use computer.....surf the web, etc.

Did you have any of this info stored on the computer....passwords too??

You have to make the call on what we do....I've given you the options.

Let me know, MrC

Lets do a complete reformat. I do not store personal data on this computer. I use a USB drive that is only turn on when I want to get to the data. The current configuration is as it was from Dell when we bought it. I have the computer here at work today so that I can communicate with you and correctly restore the system. Thanks! Paul

I'm just thinking...you say it's a Dell...so they don't come with a XP cd.

They come with a WINDOWS Recovery or Restore CD, so it may be different.

May be you should check with Dell for the proper method or procedure.

Let me know, MrC

I will contact Dell. I do however have a licensed version of XP Pro SP2 that I can use to reinstall the OS. I had it for my other computer that I was building but can use it for this one now. I will post what I find out from Dell. Paul

I have actually decided to get started on the reinstall. I have deleted the drive partition, re-created the partition, did a full reformat of the partition using NTFS, and am no reinstalling the OS. Once I have everything configured I plan to take a backup image of the system and put it to DVD if I have this issue again in the future I can recover a little easier. Can you recommend anything else that I should do? Software that I should add to prevent or help prevent future viruses and/or trojans? I assume virus software is a minimal requirement. I already have a hardware firewall via my router (not wireless). I decide not to call Dell about a restore. I think they install a lot of useless software that just slows down the boot time anyway and this laptop is out of warranty. Paul

OK Good.....Here's my speech.....

Some Preventive Maintenance:

------------------Must have or do:-----------------

Delete your system restore files and create a new restore point:

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points!

1. Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer,

2. Turn on System Restore:

Visit Windows Update and install all the lastest critical updates.

Install these two free programs, they sit in the backround and protect your system from spy and adware being installed on your system, also from your browser being hijacked.

SpywareBlaster Check for updates weekly.

SpywareGuard

Don't open e-mail attachments without first scanning them with an up-to-date anti virus program, even after doing that I would be very careful. Don't click on any executables in e-mails or any other links that you're not sure of.
Don't believe e-mails from your bank, financial institution, etc asking for personal informations - they're most likely fraudulent no matter how authentic they look.
Watch your surfing habits, don't click on or download anything you're not sure of. Don't install a program that hasn't been recommended by a reputable organization.

OK Good.....Here's my speech.....

Some Preventive Maintenance:

------------------Must have or do:-----------------

Now that you're clean: <----Important Step!!!!

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UnCheck Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Visit Windows Update and install all the lastest critical updates.

Install these two free programs, they sit in the backround and protect your system from spy and adware being installed on your system, also from your browser being hijacked.

SpywareBlaster Check for updates weekly.

SpywareGuard

IE-SPYAD
Puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
or try the new ZonedOut

Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File

Need a free anti virus?
AVG*free
Avast free
AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic
-->Check for updates - daily<---

How about a firewall? The front door to your computer.
Comodo Free Firewall
ZoneAlarm*free
Other free firewalls

Keep those temp files off your system use
ATF Cleaner - hit "select all" then just uncheck "cookies" (uncheck cookies is optional - leave it checked if you want to delete all cookies) then "empty selected"
or
CCleaner
Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
That will clear out all the temp files on the system.
