Hello
I'm trying to fix this computer for a friend.
When he brought the computer ads were poping up even without starting the browser.
So I did every kind of scan that I could find and it stopped the popups but then when I start IE it tried to go to a page called ads.k8l.info but then went to the address of his home page but said "Page con not be displayed".
So I scanned some more and now I don't see the ads.k8l.info but if I try to go to one of the search pages like yahoo.com or google.com I get the "Page con not be displayed" but other pages load fine.
By the way when I try to go to the microsoft update page it does the same thing.
I tryed the same sites in firefox and it works fine it's just IE that is the problem.

Hello and welcome to the forums

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your
desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition
files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "
Update now" link.
- Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a
  progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
select " "Quarantine" .".
Under "Reports"
- Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
- Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting
your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.

Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where
you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the
results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan along with a new HijackThis log.

I didn't see weatherbug in the add/remove programs list.
I opened windows explorer and I can see the directory and all of the file are there but it's not in add/remove programs so I left the directory for now.

Also I didn't see this in the hijackthis scan

Before I did what you said in your last post the computer was slow on shutting down but is faster now.

But the IE browser still will not go to any search site like google or yahoo or do updates from microsoft.
It just say "The page connot be displayed"

If you download and double click on this small app, it will restore all the default search fuctions for IE.

Save it to your desktop.

Right click on the file IEFIX.reg and select Merge.

If that doesn't work, see if you have this file:
C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\ie.inf

Right Click on ie.inf and select install.

IEFIX.reg did not work. I don't see ie.inf in fact I don't even see a directory called ServicePackFiles. Something else that I just noticed. I said earlyer that most other web sites are working but thats not correct in fact it seems that only a very few sites are working from IE. I tryed a few others like mapquest and myspace and they don't load.

Method 1: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
Select the OK button.
Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

Method 2: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

Well the first option didn't fix it and on the second option non of the search features are not there. When I click search the dog walks out and sits down but no search options just a blue screen behind the dog. Is it time to reinstall windows? LOL

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
