I definitely have some type of adware, if not spyware. As long as I use my Opera browser, I am fine. But, the minute I crank up my IE6, I get popups galore. I have run antivirus scan, spybot scan, etc.. Something loaded onto my machine called sxload.net in a loadnet directory, at the base level of my computer. I got nothing on the scans. I see nothing in my process that looks out of place. I show nothing in my startup. I even went into my registry and removed anything related this problem. Yet, I keep getting a bunch of popups and a bunch of numbered 'netinstaller.exe' trying to run. Don't tell me to run vundo.exe, because I tried that and it found nothing.

I want to keep IE6 active on my system, because I maintain multiple websites and forums for rare cancer patients. The majority of my users still use IE6. I want to see what they are seeing.
Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open the HijackThis Folder. Find the file HijackThis.exe, Right Click on the file and Select Rename. Rename Hijackthis.exe to Spyware.exe.

Post a new HijackThis Log.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
As soon as I saw the log, I tried that. Then I got a new hijack this log. Then hijack this wanted to go out to the internet and I allowed it. Voila, infected again. I am going to remove it, download it from scratch. Then rename it something obscure. This is nasty.
* Download VirtumundoBegone, place it on your desktop.

Doubleclick VirtumundoBeGone.exe to start the tool.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
Don't worry if you'll get a Blue screen with an error in it - this is normal.
After reboot,

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present (some entries won't be present anymore):

I didn't remove hijack this. I ran the VundoFix again. Rebooted. Ran it again. It didn't find anything. Then I got this from HJT (run from spyware.exe - as it was renamed):

You can pretty much tell by the BHO's that I did not remove the entire buggy, whatever it is. I can tell you that I downloaded a new Adobe Acrobat 8, a day or so ago. And updates to Adobe Illustrator.

BTW, while I was typing this my Comodo firewall told me that HJT was trying to access the internet to update. This time I said Deny, instead of Accept. I am not going to let it update, until I find out what is going on here. I'll let you know what is happening after I take your new suggestions.

HJT was trying to access the internet to update

HJT doesn't do that.

Launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the Quoted REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include REGEDIT4.

You can remove all programs and their backup folders I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there:

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

Safe Surfing. :D

LD, I have been on the web with IE for the last half hour or so. No more popups, no more junk!

I just wanted to come back here and let you know that I really appreciate all your time and all your help this evening. I had been banging my head against the wall all afternoon trying to get rid of this little monster. I still don't know what it was. But, I am very grateful for your wisdom and help. Now I can get back to the work of helping rare cancer patients. Thanks!
Trojan.Vundo is a component of an adware program that downloads and displays pop-up advertisements. It is known to be installed by visiting a Web site link contained in a spammed email.

Great job

You're more then welcome.
Glad we were able to help

Peace be with you :wavey:
