Yesterday LittleRed was helping me with Explorer hijack. We had taken the first steps and now I am hanging in limbo. I have not heard anything further from LittleRed as to what to do next.

Original comment on analysis of HijackThis log was : You have the coolwebsearch infection. Download This http://spywareinfo.com~merijn/files/cw shredder.zip and unzip and run it. Let it fix everything it finds (don't just scan) Reboot and post another HighJack log to get rid of remnants.

Did that.

Next instruction: Download http://tools.zerosrealm.com/pv.zip. Unzip to deasktop. Open the pv folder. Doubleclick on the runme.bat. Dos window will open. Select option 1 for explorer dll's by typing 1 and then pressing enter. Notepad will open with a log in it. Copy and paste yhe log into this post.

Did that. Also posted copy of log as seperate entry.

Then I Posted seperat query to LittleRed asking for next step. So far no reply so I am stuck.

Can anyone else hep me ?
Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

And hit the "go" tab. Find: "Appinit_Dlls" value on the right side panel, DoubleClick, copy and post here the following fields:
-Size:
-Value:

Also, click here and download 'Find-All.zip'. Unzip and run the 'findall.bat' file inside. It'll run for a while and generate a file called output.txt - save it and paste the contents of 'output.txt' in your next reply.

Use the Registrar Lite program. Navigate to (you can type the line directly into reglite address bar and hit 'go'):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Rename the Windows key in the left pane to something else - for example:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NotWindows

(You should now be able to clear the hidden contents of the AppInit_DLLs value in the right pane without being undone by the hidden process.)

DoubleClick "Appinit_Dlls" value on right pane and erase the data on the lower box (in value field):

"C:\WINDOWS\System32\reshdg.dll", hit 'apply' and 'ok' to set.

Rename NotWindows back to Windows in the left pane, close Registrar Lite and reboot the computer. If all goes well the hidden process will not run at startup and you should now be able to find and *see* the reshdg.dll in C:\WINDOWS\System32.

Using Explorer go to your root drive: C:\ and create new folder, name it: 'Junk'. Unzip and run Winfile from here. Open it up click File>Move…

Copy and paste this into the 'From' box: C:\WINDOWS\System32\reshdg.dll
Copy and paste this into the 'To' box: C:\Junk\reshdg.dll

Hit OK. Close Winfile and check in C:\Junk for that file - let me know what's there. If it's there, run CWShredder, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Reboot when done. Run HJT and post a new log for the final steps.
Hi Daemon
Seems we have about a 7 hour time difference between us. I have completed your instructions. The Junk file was created April 24/04 (from itt's properties).

When I rebootedI got the following : "Windows cannot find C:Windows\System32\services\C.exe Then: Make sure file exists or remove referance to it in the registry.

Here is log from last HJT run

Is that bad file in the 'Junk' folder now?

Let's clean you up a bit. Click here to download Ad-Aware and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Reboot when done, rescan with HJT and post a new log here so that any remnants can be removed manually.
Hi Daemon
Again, thank you for your continued help.

I will post the new HJT log at the end. Meantime a few other items to consider.

1. I don't know what program to use to open the junk file but the reshdg.dll has been removed from my Windows\System32 so would assume it's in the junk file.

2. At this point I am not sure how to run ECWShredder to get rid of the junk file.

3. Somehwhere along the way, a number of folders and files wre loaded into my favorites in Explorer, including porno stuff etc.

4. After running Ad-Aware per your instructions, the following were not able to be removed:

CoolWebS.. RegValue Malware HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:SO..
Possible Br.. RegData Malware HKEY_CURRENT_USER:SOF…
Possible Br.. RegData Malware HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:SOFT…

After reboot, heer is HJT log

Don't worry, we are getting there. We are just removing some other nasties as well as CWS at the same time.

Could you click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and uninstall 'Window Search', 'Window Searching', 'Lop.com', 'LOP SEARCH', 'Browser Enhancer', or 'Ultimate Browser Enhancer' if any of these are listed. You may be given a code to insert, do so and reboot when done.

If not listed there, click here, download and run this uninstaller. Reboot when done.

Click here, for instructions on how to enable hidden files and folders to be visible. After enabling, find, zip and send these files:

C:\PROGRA~1\ONLINE~2\Global Start.dll
C:\WINDOWS\udpmod.dll

to this e-mail address including a link to this thread in the body of the email.

Then using Explorer, create a new folder called C:\HijackThis, extract the HijackThis.exe file from the zip file into the new folder and run it from there. This is necessary to ensure you have backups should anything go wrong.

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries (if still there) by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

Reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded, find and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wnsintsv.exe

Reboot back into normal mode, rescan with HJT and post a new log here.

Again, using Explorer see if you can delete the C:\Junk folder - let me know.
Hi Daemon

1. Uninstalled Windows Searching. This was only file listed.
2. Enabled hidden files and folders. Did not find Global Start.dll or upmod.dll, thus did not send e-mail
3. Set up new folder for HijackThis using Explorer and ran and fixed items found per your list.
4. With reboot in safety mode, the file wnsitsv.exe was not there.
5. Using Explorer, tried to delete the junk folder, no luck, "Access Denied" message. Also tried Norton Systom Works to delete–same story.

Here is HJT log:

Try this - boot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded. Right-click on the C:\Junk\reshdg.dll, go to the Security tab>advanced and take ownership giving yourself 'Full control' (preferably to Administrators 'group'). Right-click the C:\Junk folder and hit properties. Click on security tab then the advanced button. Check the box that says reset permissions on all child objects. Hit apply.

You should now be able to delete the file and folder.

Have HJT fix the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\aomlaea.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\aomlaea.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\aomlaea.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\aomlaea.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\aomlaea.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\aomlaea.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

Run CWShredder again. Let me know how you get on and post a new HJT log in this thread.
Hi Daemon

New problem ! I am sending this from another computer that I have as a "work around" attempt. When I try to reply from my highjacked machine, Explorer brings up "error" message and shuts down. (says sorry for any inconvenience).

At any rate, here is what I tried to send

————————————-

Hi Daemon

Well it seems you've done it again Both the reshdl.dl file and the junk folder have now been deleted !!!!

I have fixed the obfuscated files per your instructions.

Have run SWShredder—clean

Here is new HJT log :
