Hello JCInfected,

First I need to warn you about the that file rpcc.dll. You may want to re-format and reinstall.
http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threa…;threatid=70540
I urge you to protect your personal information

Do not use this system for any transactions until you are clean.

Here are a couple of links which may provide you with additional valuable information:
When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

If You do any online banking, ebay/paypal purchases, any other sensitive online transactions…:

You are strongly advised to do the following immediately:

1. Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.

2. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

3. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

==================================
Let's try connecting to the Internet and running some addtional scans and tests.

Please test your firewall and make sure it is working properly.
Test Firewall

Do you tell me anything about this file?
C:\Program Files\finish\ƒvƒŠƒ“ƒZƒXƒT[ƒKI@`’pJ‚Ì•PŒN`\____.sys

Please perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at
http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
**Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

======
GMER
Please create a new subfolder in the Program Files folder called GMER. If you have an older version of GMER installed, you must delete it.
  • Download GMER and extract it to the C:\program files\GMER folder.
  • Please rename the GMER file
Note: You can rename gmer.exe to anything you like as long as you keep the .exe ending.
Run the Gmer.exe renamed program by double-clicking the executable file (gmer.exe) in Windows Explorer.
You may be prompted to scan immediately if GMER detects rootkit activity.
  • If you are prompted to scan your system click "yes" to begin the scan.
  • If you are not prompted, Click the "Rootkit" tab, then click "Scan".
DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

At the end of the scan, click "Copy" to copy the scan results to the clipboard. Then paste the results in a notepad file and save for you next reply.

======
Deckard’s System Scanner

Download
Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply
Please let me know about that file and if your firewall is working. Post (reply) with the results from the the Kaspersky log, the GMER scan, and Deckard’s system scanner.
I did the firewall test and it ran fine. Howver, that was probably due to the router I have which I connect to the internet through. I only use the Windows Firewall and it seems to be enabled fine. I'll definately get a free software firewall after this is fixed. Also, about the .sys file you asked about, it's for a game.

Anyways, here's the Kap log:

You need to replace your Anti-virus or else upgrade it to the newest Norton.. You can uninstall the Norton Anti-virus and replace it with another anti-virus.

Also, when I boot up, I noticed that it takes a while to start up since the AVG guard is conflicting with the Norton Antivirus autoprotect. However, because of the slower startup, I noticed some additional programs/processes that I'm not familiar with or don't recall normally appearing after the inital startup. Most of these processes disappear after the initial startup. I just wanna make sure these processes are alright so I'm gonna list them here: SBServ.exe Savscan.exe reader_sl.exe nopdb.exe ccapp.exe wmiprvse.exe alg.exe navapsvc.exe symlcsvc.exe ati2gag.exe lucoms~1.exe wdfmgr.exe imapi.exe Thanks again Susan!
Can you delete this one.
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Favorites\Old Links\Send free cards to your friends at nicecards..url Infected: Trojan.JS.Logo skipped

These are quarantined and therefore pose no threat.
C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\2859076D Infected: Trojan-Downloader.Java.OpenConnection.v skipped
C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\5C075147.htm Infected: Trojan-Downloader.JS.Weis.b skipped

C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\6E686E85 Infected: Trojan.Java.ClassLoader.z skipped

Those files you listed are all valid processes but these are related to Symantec and Norton:
sbserv.exe is a process belonging to Norton Antivirus
savscan.exe is a process associated with the Norton AntiVirus
ccapp.exe is a process belonging to Norton AntiVirus.
navapsvc.exe is a part of the Norton AntiVirus application
symlcsvc.exe is an application which belongs to Norton's Internet Security Suite.
lucoms~1.exe is a part of Symantecs Internet security suite and deals with mainly live updates, which keep your product up to date from the latest security threats.

nopdb.exe belongs to Norton Speed Disk.

I see that you have Speed Disk and Ghost? You will need to unistall the Anti-virus and Internet Security part when you install your Kaspersky Internet Security.
You cannot have more than one real-time anti-virus and firewall application installed

The AVG anti-spyware should be compatible with your current Norton products.

Yep, I will delete that link. I don't even remember myself putting it there. Do I need to do any more scans or checks or am I good to go? Thanks Susan.
Backup the registry:

I will review this and give you final instructions if everything looks fine.
Here are the scans you requested. By the way, I didn't re-enabled Norton Antivirus because I assumed that it wasn't gonna help me since it's outdated and I have AVG for now to help protect me for now before I go and get a new anti-virus. Also, looking at the scan, I'm a bit worried about the stuff created on Apr 14, which was the day I got the virus from visiting a website. Particularly these entries:

2007-04-14 16:47:34 0 d–hs—- C:\WINDOWS\CSC
2007-04-14 16:33:07 1835008 –ah—– C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\ntuser.dat
2007-04-14 16:06:05 8704 –a—— C:\WINDOWS\system32\sporder.dll

That adminstrator account nntuser.dat creation might explain why I never saw it before until I entered safe mode that day and initialized with no password. Just thought I'd point that out just in case.

Anyways here are the logs:

Thanks a lot Susan!
You still have the Windows firewall enabled and no firewall application installed. You may have a router with a firewall but a software firewall is extra protection. Your Windows updates are not set to automatically update. And your anti-virus still shows the Norton which is out-dated and disabled.

I do not feel good about this.

Yes, I'm going to immediately install a software firewall after this. The automatic updates, I disabled myself a long time ago and manually updated myself so I knew what was getting updated. I've been checking for updates myself manually every 2-3 days and I'll buy a new software firewall after this.
Hmm, can't seem to edit my old post. I'm just waiting on the OK if my computer is clean to go and buy the new Antivirus and download a free software firewall. That's why those warning are still there.
Just an update, I've bought BitDefender 10 Internet Security since I couldn't find Kaspersky in the store today. However, I've been reading some reviews and I was troubled by the compatibility issues, slow speeds and apparently, "leaky" firewall it provides. Are these reports generally true? If so, should I just return BitDefender and just get Kaspersky? Also, once I get a new firewall and anti virus, would that be enough to solve the extra.txt problem? Thanks Susan
Sorry if I'm spamming too much but upon reading further reviews and finding a store in town that sells Kaspersky, I've decided to return BitDefender 10 and purchase Kaspersky Internet Security which includes the firewall as well. I'll uninstall Norton completely and install Kaspersky after I purchase it. After or even before installing Kaspersky, would I need to run any additional scans or tests? Thanks Susan and sorry for all the questions and for bearing with me.
Hi JCInfected,

I got tied up helping my daughter with MS-Word and scanning pictures last night! Why do they wait until the last minute?

I've decided to return BitDefender 10 and purchase Kaspersky Internet Security which includes the firewall as well.

Good!

You can delete the tools we used like:
Deckards System Scanner
SDFix
GMER

I would change all my passwords and go ahead and set a password for the Administrator user profile. Be sure and update your Java!

STEP 1.
Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
STEP 2.
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

STEP 3.
======
DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….39eba6ea0b5e8ee

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Kasperky Internet Security is important!

  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Updating Java
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  • More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.

Susan
Nono, thank YOU for doing a great job and helping me out through this nasty virus. Hopefully your daughter will one day be as tech savvy as yourself  . I'll be getting Kaspersky on Thu and I'll see if there are any hiccups installing and doing your above steps. I'll let you know when I'm done all this so this can all be wrapped up. I'm definately donating, maybe a week or 2 later just until I get my credit card statement to make sure that hasn't been used by the hacker. Thanks a lot Suan and great work!
