Serious Virus/spyware Problem

Somehow I aquired a virus or spyware problem that is rebooting my computer. I took my free AVG antivirus off, and downloaded the Zonealarm Secuirty Suite. I was able to run the antivirus, and found 5 trojan downloaders, which it quarateened, but the second I tried to do a spyware scan, it went to a blue screen saying that it shut windows down to prevent my computer from being damaged. I could not get off that screen, so I did a manual shutdown. I was able to boot up the computer and I upgraded the Zonealarm antivirus and spyware programs, and again the second I went to click check for spyware, it shut my computer down, and it reboots itself from there. It is also not allowing me to connect to the internet sometimes, and I am also noticing it is taking longer to boot, and it's doing some quirky little stuff, like ie_error messages, and messages about serious system recovery notices??? Hello.


You have a serious backdoor infection on your computer. A backdoor is a malware program which gives hackers access to your computer.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the worm has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of worm, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer or this is just a "gaming machine" with no important information and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so. Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

I downloaded Stopzilla and it found and deleted most, if not all of my problems. I will run Hijack this again, and let me know what you think. If there is anything I need to delete to help please let me know, thanks!!

Don't do nothing, it is a virus, but we will delete it later :)

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Please Download MsnVirRem.exe to your desktop from one of the following mirrors.
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
  • Double click MsnVirRem.exe to run it
  • Once open, click the button labeled "Search and Destroy"
    <<Your computer will now be scanned for Infected Files>>
  • When scanning is finished, you will be prompted to reboot only if infected. Click OK
  • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
  • After the Reboot, you WILL receive file not found errors (usually 4) please acknowledge them and continue.
  • A Message should popup from MsnVirRem if not, double click the program again and it will finish
Please Post the contents of C:\msnvirrem.log along with a fresh HijackThis log


Please Download F-Secure's Blacklight and save it to your desktop.

Doubleclick fsbl.exe, accept the agreement, click Scan, then click Next

You'll see a list what have been found. A log will appear to your desktop, it is named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx will be random numbers).

DON'T choose Rename if something was found!

  • Find this file:

  • Select the file, then click Open
  • Click Send File

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.

  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Make your hidden files visible:
  • Click start
  • Click my computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.

  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.

Please download ATF-cleaner and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act?
      • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Under How to scan?
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software:
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports:
      • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan?
      • Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
    IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)

  • When done, click the Save Scan Report button. (4)
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.

Please Download F-Secure's Blacklight and save it to your desktop.

Doubleclick fsbl.exe, accept the agreement, click Scan, then click Next

You'll see a list what have been found. A log will appear to your desktop, it is named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx will be random numbers).

DON'T choose Rename if something was found!

First of all, I tried to send you a copy of C:\WINDOWS\updater.exe, and could not find the file? Also, I had AVG Free Anti-Spyware on my computer when I got the virus. I reinstalled it, went to safe mode, started running the complete scan, and 3 hours later it was only half way through the scan. Is it supposed to take so long? I had to quit the scan because I did not have anymore time. It did find 1 thing during that time, that I quarantined. I may, or may not get back to it today. The computer seems to be working fine. Do I need to continue??

Hello :) I recommend to continue :) Forget that AVG anti-spyware and run F-Secure's Blacklight and post it's log and a fresh HijackThis log. :) ~Markka~

Your java is out of date. Update your java.

Instruction:
  • -> Go to Control panel -> Add/remove programs
  • -> Find java(s) from the list
  • -> Delete this java version via add/remove programs:
    jre1.5.0_09
  • -> Please download from here a new java and install it.
  • -> The latest java version is: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1
Please download ATF-cleaner and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser:

  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser:

  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Kaspersky online scanner works only with IE!

Please run an online scanner with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

    o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

    + Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

    o Scan Options:

    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
