Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

apparently i visited a malicious site of some sort recently as my computer just started going kapoot. i'm getting popups very frequently, virtual memory error messages of some sort, and when i try to run the Task Manager it says it's been disabled by the administrator (me).

i'd appreciate any and all assistance in getting rid of this nasty virus/trojan/worm/whatever the heck it is!

i thought it'd be worth noting that i did encounter a small error message when i clicked the "remove" button on the HJT. it still seemed to fix everything i had checked though.
regedit works but task manager still says it has been disabled by the admin and i still get the popups to random anit-spyware pages. the dos mode style prompts seem to have stopped tho.
Task Manager fix.
Download and run this REG fix and double-click it.
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/EnableTM.reg

Click the link below and get Google Toolbar.
Google toolbar has a very good built in popup blocker with a nice search bar. To provide privacy, select disable advanced features when installing if that's a option.

http://toolbar.google.com/

I'm headed to bed but let me know how it goes.

We're not finished yet
the regedit download seems to have had no effect on the task manager. it still is disabled. also do i HAVE to download the google toolbar to block my popups? there isnt a fix so that the popups dont occur i have to download a program that stops me from noticing them even tho they are still occuring? EDIT: i installed the Google Toolbar but it has had no effect on the problematic pupups. i was also too hastey in saying that the DOS style popups had ceased.

do i HAVE to download the google toolbar to block my popups? there isnt a fix so that the popups dont occur i have to download a program that stops me from noticing them even tho they are still occuring?

IE has a pop-up blocker. With IE open, Click Tools> Internet Options> Privacy and put a check in Block Pop-ups.

I'm not sure what type of pop-ups you're having. Is it Windows Updates or you're AVG update window?

We can try some other things.

Only for Windows XP and Windows 2000

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe
Double Click SmitfraudFix.exe on your Desktop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

[external image: Posted Image]

______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named:
c:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post:

Also, pertaining to the popups, which are the only real nusance that i am really noticing other than the task manager being inaccessable (the slowdown caused by this problem seems to have been fixed with the help provided last night), i'm only haveing 2 annoying poppups but they are occuring frequently.

the first one act's as your usual popup, minimizing any games i might be playing in the midst of battle etc…and it MIGHT not be malicious but i'm very untrusting of anything new my computer is doing and this just started yesterday. here is a link to what the popup looks like and says:

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/9945/popupbb7.gif

if it's legitamate please let me know i do not want to click any links until i know it is.

and the worst of the 2 is a cascade of 3 windows that look like DOS command prompts with the title "sysrlb32.exe" at the top of each command prompt, which after 3 or 4 seconds all three windows close and i receive an error message. the 3 window cascade popup can be seen here:

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/3366/cascadepj2.gif

the error message can be seen here:

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/2094/errormq9.gif

lastly in regaurds to the regedit that had no effect on fixing the task manager i see that the file you had me run attempted to change a value to 00000000. i've tried doing it manually and also in safe mode but no matter what i'm still unable to open the task manager because the value is always set back to 00000001 somehow.
Well we found one bad guy

Running the Clean

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

[external image: Posted Image]

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
