Hi bitshifter,
welcome to TomCoyote forum. My name is Rosty and I'm goin to help you withe your log.

We can help you, but first you need to help us.
Any reason why your windows isn't up to date? You don't have even ServicePack1 installed!
Remember that your system is extremely vulnerable without the necessary security patches/updates, so malware can get installed automatically while surfing without any problems.
Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…p1/default.mspx and update to Service Pack 1. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
When your system is clean afterwards, then update to SP2, because updating to SP2 CAN cause problems as long as you are infected."
Once you have updated to SP1, please post a new HijackThis log.

Regards,

Rosty.
Thank you very much for getting back to me. Much appreciated. I did as you asked (I hope). All the updating prompts made no mention of this service packet 1 once the process started. My new HJT log is below. Again thank you so much.

Hi bitshifter,

Thank you very much for getting back to me. Much appreciated.

You're welcome.

I did as you asked (I hope).

I'm afraid you didn't!!

you should have to see this in your log:

Platform: Windows XP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.001 (6.00.2600.0000)

Do you see the 1 in bold.

Please try again to update to service pack 1.

You are missing one important program on that computer: An antivirus.
This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can and run a complete scan of the computer:Install one, update it and then run a full scan. Let it quarantine/delete anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything that it reports but can not remove.

IMPORTANT
It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and instal one of these excellent (and free) products: Zone Alarm or Sygate
It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time, but you can download both to your Desktop and install each in turn to see which one you prefer.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Open HijackThis and click do a scan only and place a check next to the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B0BAA0D3-B86E-A237-D6EA-D5428A8C6CBC} - C:\WINDOWS\addvp32.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [iehelper] WTFCTF.exe

Please close all other windows and browsers, except HijackThis, and click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

Regards,

Rosty.
Hey Rosty! Thanks for all your help so far. I'll start by addressing a few of your pointers. Trying to keep this organized…

1. I do have an antivirus and firewall. The program is called Freedom (Zero Knowledge) which was provided by my internet service (Originally Apelphia, Now Comcast). I checked the firewall to see if enabled and it was checked as enabled.

2. I tried to download MS service pack 1 and it said that no more updates were available. As in it was indicating that I was up to date.

3. I downloaded Avast Free and ran the program. It found about 4 or 5 items for deletion. It seemed that the program caused an issue with my CPU and it caused everything to pretty much lock up when I attempted to access a program/file/folder. The internet service did not work either. I disconnected my internet and removed Avast program. Once I did that, everything kind of got back to normal.

4. I ran fixwareout and my log is attached below.

5. I ran Hijack This and deleted the items you noted.

5. Ran Hijack This again and my log is posted below.

6. I attempted to find the Network Connection tab you had noted and could not find it. I am pretty sure I followed your instructions here.

7. I performed the run command suggested. Seemed to work. It was real quick.

My logs are below. Again, thank you for your help and time with this. I really appreciate it.

Hi bitshifter,

thanks for the logs I asked about.

I tried to download MS service pack 1 and it said that no more updates were available. As in it was indicating that I was up to date.

Strange, it doesn't show up on your log.

Your log looks clean.
How are things running?
Please let me know.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - You should disable and enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide.

Rosty.
Hi bitshifter,

lets do some checking to see what went wrong with your updates!

Please downlaod Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to their desktop from either of the following sites:

http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe

When downloaded, please do the following:

1. Go Start>>Run and type "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config into the run box, then hit ENTER

2. A popup menu will appear. Have the user do the following:
Remove checkmark beside "Main Log"
Add checkmark beside:
"Extra Log"
System Information
Security Centre
Add/Remove
Remove the checkmark beside Whitelist Output under "Options"

3. Click "Scan"

A Notepad file called "extra.txt" will appear after the tool has finished its scan.
Please post the log from "extra.txt" in your next reply.

Regards,

Rosty.
