Hi Pamela. :)

Welcome to TomCoyote forums!

You are currently using an unpatched version of Windows XP and are, thus, wide open to infections. It is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a immediately, so that we are not wasting our time. You can get SP1a here. You will also need to get SP2, but NOT NOW, only after you are sure that your machine is clean.

Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh HijackThis log here.
Thank you, am doing it now. Can I sign into yahoo on her computer and save hijack log in my yahoo notebook w/o my password being comprimised?
Hi Pamela.

Can I sign into yahoo on her computer and save hijack log in my yahoo notebook w/o my password being comprimised?

I wouldn't want to guarantee it! I'm happy to proceed to the next step without the HijackThis log provided that you do update the computer to SP1a first. Please let me know if you have problems with the update.

Download and Install SDFix

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(This is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

————————————————————–

Reboot to Safe Mode

Important: If you have an 'always on' connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. I suggest that you print these instructions, as you will not have access to them once you have disconnected from the internet.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting a menu appears.
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
——————————————————–

Run SDFix
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds, then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process and then display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Paste the contents of the Report.txt, as a reply to this thread, together with a new HijackThis log

Good morning Pamela.

The log's looking a bit better. :) Did you install Service Pack 1a as per my previous post? It's not showing in the HijackThis log and it's vital to have this (Installing SP1a Windows Updates will not have the same effect, as we can't be sure that everything's there). If not, please download SP1a and install it before going on to the next steps. I repeat my instructions for clarity:

You are currently using an unpatched version of Windows XP and are, thus, wide open to infections. It is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a immediately, so that we are not wasting our time. You can get SP1a here.

————————————————-

Disable SpywareGuard

This is a good program but it's real-time protection may interfere with our 'fix'. Please disable it as follows:
  • Right-click the running icon of SpywareGuard in the system tray to open the program.
  • Go to Menu > File and choose Exit.
  • The program will automatically restart at next boot.
———————————————

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193423} -
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193429} -
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-615111193427} -
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1131-1111-1111-611111193428} -
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WLogon - srvc.dll (file missing)
O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34546} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

Reboot the computer.

———————————————

HijackThis may not remove all of the files relating to the fixed items. We therefore need to check this and delete them if necessary. First we need to make sure that you can see all of the files.
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Advanced Settings:
    • Under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders
    • Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types
    • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • Click Apply to All Folders
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK

******But…oops…hijackthis quarantined! Best place to do new download for hijackthis?
Hi Pamela.

HijackThis hasn't been quarantined - that was Hijacker.Agent.ac. There were some pretty nasty things on this computer. Someone has had access to the computer and has possibly gathered personal information from it.

You are strongly advised to change all your online passwords, but do not do it using this computer - use another, clean one. If you use the computer for any financial transactions (online banking, credit card payments, PayPal or any other financial accounts), then call your banks, credit card companies etc and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft. Ask them to put a watch on the accounts or change all of the account/card numbers.

I believe that we can clear your computer of these infections but cannot guarantee that it will be 100% safe to use for those sort of transactions. The only way to be certain, would be to reformat and reinstall Windows. The choice is yours - please let me know what you decide. If you want to reinstall, I can give you some guidance on this.

If you wish to carry on , please post a new HijackThis log.
If you please, ***Where can I get a safe download of hijack this?*** I will tell my friend what you said about the passwords…but she will probably just change them (from my clean computer), they where variations of the same number (too simple) anyway! If you have any ideas of what programs I should dump from this computer..please feel free as I would like to speed it up as much as possible. I will wait to completely update windows until I download and re-run highjack this? and post it to you…. Thank you so much! Pamela
Thank you for your diligence/tolerance. I love working on computers but I am new to it and still learning. You have been very helpful and patient. Would like to re-do Windows and make this computer completely secure. My friend uses this computer for a home buisness. I told her about the identity theft as well.

Found hijackthis in zip file…Don't I feel dumb! Here are the other steps you asked me to do…Sorry.

Good morning Pamela. Happy Easter!

I can now see SP1a showing in the HijackThis log - well done! :)

You say that you intend to re-install Windows. First, we need to make sure that you have the necessary tools to do so. Please check the computer's documentation for information about re-installation. Some computers have a 'hidden' partition which is used to re-install. Some have a manufacturer's re-install disk. Both of these should put the computer back into the state it was in when it was purchased. If you have neither of these two options, you will need the original Windows XP installation disk. If you have none of these you won't be able to re-install.

Bear in mind that this can entail quite a bit of work and that all data and programs on the computer will be lost. You will therefore need the installation disks for any program you want to re-install and backups of all data, pictures etc that you wish to keep. Some programs may be included in the manufacturer's partition or disk. I suggest that we finish cleaning the computer anyway, so that the data on the computer can be backed-up safely.

Your latest HijackThis log has a lot of processes and services missing. I suspect that this is because of this:-

I made sure in start menu…run…msconfig…services…only microsoft apps are running and the avg? Doing something wrong?

It's vital that you keep everything running at the moment, especially your antivirus program. Please re-enable everything in msconfig, reboot and then run another HijackThis scan.

Please let me know which method of installation you will be using or, alternatively, let me know if you are unable (or unwilling) to re-install. Let me know if you have any questions.

Please post a new HijackThis log in any case (after re-activating the services).
Happy Easter to you too. Thanks for your quick reply. I do not believe that my friend has any discs for this computer. I do know, however, that she did a system restore sometime before she brought this computer to me. She told me she had lost some very important photographs after the system restore. I do not know how to check if this system has a partition?

I have restored all programs…here is the log
