Dell Laptop is slow -

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

She told me the computer has become quite slow. I have run Spy ware removers etc., I have killed and uninstalled lots of browser helpers etc. Seems lots of people think they're cool. I have installed WinPatrol and done lots but I would like, if possible a look at the hijack log, by someone who knows what to look for. Thanks and the log follows and thanks for this process and your time. Gene

Hi GeneL and Welcome to TomCoyote,

It looks like you did a good job cleaning up the computer from looking at the hijackthis log. Let's run a couple of scans though please.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

STEP 1.
======
Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Disable Winpatrol:
Please disable Winpatrol as it may hinder the removal of some entries.
Right click the running icon of Winpatrol, and choose exit.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable WinPatrol again.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Go to the Control Panel==>Add/Remove Programs and Remove Viewpoint

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\<=folder

STEP 2.
======
GMER
Please create a new subfolder in the Program Files folder called GMER. If you have an older version of GMER installed, you must delete it.
  • Download GMER and extract it to the C:\program files\GMER folder.
  • Please rename the GMER file
    Note: You can rename gmer.exe to anything you like as long as you keep the .exe ending.
    Run the Gmer.exe renamed program by double-clicking the executable file (gmer.exe) in Windows Explorer.
    You may be prompted to scan immediately if GMER detects rootkit activity.
  • If you are prompted to scan your system click "yes" to begin the scan.
  • If you are not prompted, Click the "Rootkit" tab, then click "Scan".
DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

At the end of the scan, click "Copy" to copy the scan results to the clipboard. Then paste the results in a notepad file and also paste them back in your next reply.

STEP 3.
======

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit.
  • Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG Anti-spyware.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Susan,

Thanks very much, I've printed it out, downloaded the stuff and will report back when I get over to her house again, soon I hope.

GeneL

Susan,

I spent some time with the laptop today. Following is the Hijackthis log. I got rid of the Viewpoint stuff, I had stopped it with Scotty but I followed your instructions and got it removed from the system. I ran GMER in safe mode and it found nothing. There was no log from it to post here. I then installed the AVG Anti-Spyware and was going to run it but ran into problems, while in safe mode I could not work with the program as it overfilled the laptops screen and I could find no way to run it in a sized window. I could not find or get at the window controls, even to terminate it, I had to use task manager to terminate the program. So - there is no log from it because I didn't run it. I had run AdwareSE and SpyBot etc., before and they came up clean so I am pretty sure the system does not have anything adverse on it. It does take awhile to boot up and after boot, it takes a long time to open certain programs, like Windows Explorer, it's slow going the first time. Lots of HD activity but I've not a clue what it's doing straining to even open the C drive. Once it's open and you close it and open it again, it's quick. That's the same for all the programs, takes a long time for first load but sucessive loads are quick. Probably that initial loading of .dll files is what I'm seeing and then on reload it's quick. It only has 512 Meg of memory, it's a 1.4gig processor so it aint a barn burner anyway. I also think the upgrade to IE7 has cost this computer some performance but that's just a guess.

Anyway, I thank you very much for looking at this and providing me with the steps to take, I'm sorry I could not perform all of them for you but the Hijack Log follows.

Regards,

Gene
