My Hijackthis log...please help me

Hello all! I made sure to follow the instructions in the self help section before posting…

I Downloaded, installed and updated Spybot, Ad-aware, AVG, and ATF cleaner. I followed all of their instructions as well.

Just an FYI; this is a shared computer at my work running XP w/ sp2, so i'm not sure if that effects anything or not.

My problem is this: when i log into windows, windows explorer does not open. As such i must manually run it from the task manager. This happens occasionally, not every time i log on, which is very confusing.

I'm sorry you have had to wait but sometimes there is not enough time and energy to go around smoothly.

I noticed you are running the new Beta version of Hijack This. It is necessary that you scan again using the Version 1.99.1 that is available HERE.

Then please repost here and I will complete my diagnosis. (I can start it with the present log but some information is missing)

But a question before I go. :scratch:

Is your workplace the epixpharma.com domain?

And it appears you have some programs for Remote Access of your computer. Lenovo, Timbuktu Pro and netOctupus Agent? Did you or someone in your organization install those?

So, please post a fresh HJT log and I will check it out. Thanks.

Things look good! :thumbup:

You have a lot of things running but the log is clean.

If you want to be certain that you are clean, you should do an on-line scan HERE

You will be prompted to install some software in order to do the scan. Say yes and allow it to scan your whole computer.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Thanks for your prompt response! I will be sure to install and run the following asap! Just to clarify though, the problem isn't with Internet Explorer. It is with Windows Explorer. Occasionally when i goto log on, it fails to load. So i must manually goto 'add a new task' in the task manager and start explorer.exe. It happens about everyother time i log on/off. As such, my desktop doesn't load, no task bar, system tray etc. Once i manually start explorer.exe from the task manager, everything is all good. I just assumed it must have been some sort of spyware/malware doing this. Any thoughts? Thanks again!!! :)

Well, it sounds like a corrupt file. :angry:

If you have the original XP cd, you could run the System File Checker command (sfc)

Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow Note the space between sfc and /scannow.

And did you say the other profiles that use this machine have the same problem? Or no, they don't have any problem?

rigacci, I apologize, i should have mentioned this already but i also had originally thought it was a corrupt file as well and previously ran a SFC and it didnt come up with anything. Thats why i figured it must have been spyware. :( The only profile that had encountered the problem was 'ecosta'. I am helpdesk here at epixpharma and have logged onto the pc numerous times to run the various scans/checks etc and have not encountered the explorer.exe error (which i find odd). I'm at a loss :scratch: any other thoughts? Thanks again! -Jeff

If it only affects one user, it might be a problem in the user registry hive. You might try creating a new profile for the user and if that works, just delete the original, after transfering all of their data of course. B)
