Dear all,

I have lost all documents from 2006 and the folder now has OX163JXORENX8MZ after the name, and they all appear empty. My son suggested I post a hijack log and request assistance, any would be appreciated.

Does this log suggest I should remove anything or does this look familiar?
Regards,
Lorna

Hi lorna,

I'm Gary R, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

You have signs of a Keylogger/RAT (Remote Access Trojan) on your computer, this one often (but not always) comes with a Rootkit.

You are strongly advised to do the following immediately:

1. Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.

2. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions. Inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

3. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer, because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

IF YOU USE THIS COMPUTER FOR ONLINE BANKING OR OTHER FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS, OR HAVE DATA OF A CONFIDENTIAL NATURE ON IT, MY RECOMMENDATION IS THAT YOU RE-FORMAT AND RE-INSTALL YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM AND PROGRAMMES. WE CAN NEVER BE TOTALLY SURE WE HAVE GOT RID OF ALL MODIFICATIONS WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN MADE BY THE ATTACKER, AND THEREFORE CANNOT GUARANTEE THE SAFETY OF YOUR DATA.

If you choose to re-format, instructions for doing so can be found HERE (courtesy of wng_z3r0).

If you wish to try and clean your system, follow the instructions below. (It is highly probable we won't be able to recover your lost documents, whether that is the case is impossible to say at this moment).

First, there are signs of 3 different Anti-Virus programs on your computer, McAfee, Bullguard, and AVG, are all these programmes active, or are some of them remnants of previous installs, please let me know.

If more than one of them are active, you must disable all but one of them, as they will conflict giving all sorts of problems which will complicate cleaning you greatly.

OK, now to attack your infection.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% (Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in safe mode.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste me the contents of Report.txt along with a new HijackThis log please.
Gary, Hi I'm Stephen and Lorna is my Ma. It was me who suggested she contact the forum. She's now obviously in a bit of a flap! (and phoning the bank). She's asked me to reply in the meantime with a couple of questions. You suggested she disconnect the PC from the internet? how can she then dowload the fixes etc if she does so?? Macafee had not been updating but I did that on it last night. The AVG is the free download that she'd updated and Bulldog, she has no idea. What one should she keep active? She does use internet banking, do you suggest she re-formats and re-installs before going on to SDfix? One last thing I thought may be suspicious, task manager says there is a programme running all the time NEWSUPD ? I'm no PC expert myself but have never noticed any programme running in the task manager that I've not opened. Thanks Stephen
Hi Stephen,

SDBot, the infection you have is a "Backdoor" Trojan, that is it has given someone full access to your computer and anything that is on it.

Without doing a full forensic analysis of it (which is not possible online) I couldn't say quite what may have been modified by your attacker.

SDFix will get rid of the infection, but will not take care of any unknown modifications your attacker may have made.

As you are using your computer for online banking, my personal opinion is that you should re-format your hard drive and re-install your operating system.

If you do this, there will be no need to run any clear up tools afterwards, as the re-formatting will clear the infection. If you've never done this before it may be worth taking it to the repair shop and letting them do it, there can be all sorts of minor problems when doing a re-format/re-install which are difficult to assess and advise on online.

Of course this will mean losing your personal data unless you have clean backup copies. Otherwise we're into risk assessment, your attacker may have hidden things in your personal files, there is no way to tell, but I have to say this is not the usual situation. Usually the attacker just modifies system processes to give him access and you can usually recover some of your personal files. Only you can make the necessary decisions over what you want to keep and what risk you're prepared to take.

If you want to attempt a clean-up, you'll need to download things on another computer and transfer them across using a USB drive or DVDR (or floppy disc if your computer has one). But I wouldn't do any further Online Banking on this machine if you do, even if we appear to have got it clean.

As regards your Anti-Virus situation. I personally use AVG free, and find it to be quite adequate, however if you've paid for McAfee and it's fully updated I'd keep that, it's harder to remove from your computer. Simply uninstall the AVG programme using Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

The Bullguard is obviously a remainder from an earlier installation, or a rogue that we'd need to remove manually (no problem).
Gary, we are giving it a go thanks, have added sdfix log and hijack too.

Gary, also….just tried to copy some of my photos to data pen thinking they'd be clear and have folder with sytem and files such as ODE4F63-C398 etc etc And forgot to add yes we have several user accounts but all have admin access. Thanks again
Hi lorna,

OK, that didn't quite get all I expected it to.

We need to remove a service.
  • Click Start > Run now type sc stop XCOMM click OK.
  • Click Start > Run now type sc delete XCOMM click OK.
Note: There is a space between sc and stop/delete, and a space between stop/delete and XCOMM.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Launch AVG by double-clicking on the icon.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • You will need to update AVG to the latest definition files.
  • At the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then in the Manual Update section, click on Start Update.
[*]The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

[*]When updates are completed, close AVG.

[*]Do not run a scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG.
AVG manual updates

We'll need to disable the real-time protection on Webroot Spy Sweeper as it will interfere with the fix.

If you have SpySweeper version 4:

  • Open it, Click Options over on the left, then Program options
  • Uncheck load at windows startup.
  • Over to the left, Click shields and Uncheck all there.
  • Uncheck home page shield.
  • Uncheck automatically restore default without notification.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect before running HJT.
—————————————————————–
If you have SpySweeper version 5:
  • To disable SpySweeper Shields
  • Open SpySweeper.
  • Click Shield Settings on the right
(or Shields on the left, depending what screen you're on).

Any problems let me know.

Note: You'll have to search for videosd32.exe, it will probably be in either C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 folders.

      • Check all options.
    • Reports
      • Check Automatically generate report after every scan.
      • Uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • What to scan
      • Check Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • When the scan has finished
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button.
Note: Don't save the report before you hit the Apply action button.

Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

AVG will save a report in the following location C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG anti-spyware 7.5\Reports

REBOOT INTO NORMAL MODE

Now run a scan with HJT, and send me the log please, along with the log from AVG Anti-Spyware.
Gary, thanks for your patience,

Thank you, Lorna
Hi lorna,

Looking better. Because of the nature of the infection you had and the fact that you use this computer for online banking, I'd like to do a few more checks before I pronounce you clear.

First, the Bullguard entry is still on your HJT log, so run another scan with HJT and when finished check this entry.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: You must be using Internet Explorer as your browser as it will be necessary to install an Active X component to your computer.

Important If you have previously used Kaspersky Online Scanner (before 8th Aug 2006), you will have to uninstall the old version using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel before you can use the new version.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK.
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post please, along with a new HJT log and the logs from GMER and FileFind.
Note: The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

Can you post me the rest of the log please, starting from where the last one left off.

Best post the other logs I asked for separately so they don't get cut off as well.
Hi Gary, Stephen here, I'm leaving My Ma's kaspersky runnimg with instructions to paste on the next reply. In the meantime hijack this is not removing the bulldog-I check the box and fix then it goes blank. I uninstalled and reinstalled hijack but same result. Also the FileFind found no sign of videosd32.exe. My mum also says more of her documents were in her recylce bin last week and empty. Cheers stephen
