Hi,
First off let me thank you soo much for helping me before I start. I play the online game World of Warcraft and when I go through certain errors of the game it crashes on me and I get a system resource error. I also use the Ventrillo voice communication program and most of the time when WoW crashes Ventrillo will as well, but other programs I have open (ex: internet explore, etc) won't. I play the game daily and this happens to me at least once a day if not more then that.
I assume that the system resource error is due to either too low ram (I only have 1g but am going to upgrade it this week to 2g) or too many proccess running (Windows Task Manager shows that I have 63 processes currently running). If this problem is due to too many processes running do you have any suggestions on what I should remove? Or if it is some maliciious program let me know about that as well please.

Thanks for helping me,
Stacey

Hi Stacey

Defrag both C: and D:\
Run Defrag three times in a row on each drive

Gamers like to "disable" Virtual Memory, thinking that their physical RAM is faster for gaming. It is, but….
With only 1gb of RAM, you will occasionally exceed RAM requirements when gaming and using Ventrillo, especially if you decide to have other windows and applications open at the same time.
Therefore - Enable Virtual Memory. Either allow Windows to manage Virtual Memory, or Set Paging File to 3072 Min, 3072 MAX (this is 3 x the amount of your physically installed RAM)
You currently have Virtual Memory/Paging/SwapFile set as No Virtual Memory.
Do the following:
Right-Click on My Computer
Select - Advanced - Performance - Settings
Select - Advanced(tab)
Select - Virtual Memory - Change
Set either for Windows to Manage or as suggested above 3072MB Min and Max

I don't know if you have installed the most recent update to your Radeon 9600 video card, but you may get better video resolution speed if you do find an updated driver. Your present video performance (162.81 MP/s) is fairly good for that card and should handle WOW adequately at most game settings, but would not be sufficient to handle more demanding (first-person-shooter) games, except at lower game settings.

4.
Internet Connection…
You have great speed, but 100% ping loss (should be close to 0%).
This could indicate a large variety of problems.
-Remote rural location
-Poor service wiring from the Phone Company
-Poor wiring in your house
-Unnecessarily long wires or extension wires to your Modem, or from your modem to your machine.

5.
FONTS
What's up with all those FONTS
The usual load is around 215…. You have 509
(extra FONTS slow down the machine when the Registry has to read through all of them to select the one you are presently using)
If you have downloaded additional FONTS and actually "use them" for an important purpose, then fine.
Otherwise, consider removing your extra add-on FONTS. (Do not delet TRUE TYPE FONTs or any that are marked for system use)

6.
UNINSTALL or at the very least "disable" Kontiki P2P file sharing
You may not even know how Kontiki got installed, but it is probably using a large portion of your BandWidth to serve the file-sharing needs of other Kontiki members!

7.
DISABLE as many of the following as possible. (all are "optional" and will not adversely affect the performance of your machine if they are disabled. You can always Run any of them "manually" by clicking on their Icon, or via C:\Program Files\. In the meantime, these are Running and Consuming large amounts of System Resources and are "suspect" in your periodic "crashes".
Note: {Once you've set up your machine as you like it, having these items Running is just Background Bloat, since you won't be using them. But they "phone home" for unnecessary checks-for-updates, or just run in the task bar needlessly consuming resources.)

Use MSCONFIG to "disable" these items from your STARTUP(tab) (you may not find them all…. let us know)

Office XP speech (ctfmon.exe) is hardly ever used by anyone, but it installed by Microsoft as a foreign language and disability language support utility in Office/Works utilities.
Disable ctfmon.exe by doing the following:
GoTo:
-Control Panel
-Select - Regional and Language Options
-Select the Languages(tab)
-Click on the –Details(button)
-Select the Advanced(tab)
-Place a checkmark in the box that says "Turn off advanced text services."

Do you use the "special features" of your Logitech Mouse?
If not, you can "disable" this item and your mouse will continue functioning just fine as a two-button featured mouse.

Hibernate enabled Yes
HIBERFIL.SYS present Yes
Hibernate policy in use Yes

Desktop machines don't ordinarily need hibernate/hiberfil.sys services.
This is an "indexing service" that is used on Laptops to constantly index and save current files and configuration so that nothing is lost in the event of battery failure…….. It is a huge resource hog.
To disable Hibernate:
Right-Click on your Desktop
Select - ScreenSaver
Select - Power (Management)
Select - Hibernate(tab)
Remove the checkmark/tick from "enable hibernate"

While you're at it you will probably benefit from turning off "indexing service"
Start > Run > services.msc. Double click on Indexing, stop it first, then disable

8. (Edit…. additional suggestion)
(Optional consideration for increased performance in XP)
Consider turning off "eye candy"
(in many cases "eye candy" only affects desktop icon appearance, font appearance, and the like)
Your preference should prevail if elements of your gamin experience appear more pleasing with "eye candy" turned on.
Try it out. You can always return to your current settings.

Right-Click on My Computer
Select - Advanced - Performance - Settings
Select - Adjust for Best Performance

Keep us posted with your progress.

Best Regards
Hi I wanted to thank you for all the helop you are giving me with this. I wanted to give you an update on my progress. I would've posted this sooner but I didn't have much time before now. On Thursday I installed new ram on my computer taking me up to 2gigs. Since then I havent had any game crashing issues. I did want to make sure I have these steps taken care of though so that down the road these don't become an issue for me. 1. Both drives are defragged 3 times each. 2.I changed this setting. However, since my original post I have upgraded my memory to 2gigs. Would this setting stay the same then? 3. I have updated my video driver. 4. Hmm.. this may be a little part of my problem. I am connected to a router. I did not want a wireless connection so I do have an ethernet cable running from my computer to the router. I will see if I can find a shorter cable. 5.LOL believe it or not I like almost all of them. However I did look and see that for some odd reason I had a Font folder under both my C & my D drives. I deleted the Font folder on my D drive and I'm sure that eliminated most of those extra Fonts. 6. I originally couldnt find anything that said Kontiki P2P (no file, nothing under add/remove programs). It wasn't until the next steps that I found a lil trace of it. 7. I went thru the steps you told me and was able to disable everything Except the following items. They were not listed under the Startup tab, however if I did the cntrl-alt-delete I do see some of them running. QUOTE ATI taskbar icon ATI Technologies, Inc. They are memory hogs and I would like them disabled. I did see online that this version of Pc-Cillian did have an issue with this & that it is recommended to install an older version, unfortunately I dont have an older version so I either use what I have & work around it or uninstall it and put in a different program to cover what Pc-Cillian is supposed to. QUOTE MouseWare Logitech Inc. C:\WINDOWS\Logi_MwX.Exe "Do you use the "special features" of your Logitech Mouse?" Actually I do use some of the special features lol. "While you're at it you will probably benefit from turning off "indexing service" Start > Run > services.msc. Double click on Indexing, stop it first, then disable" I wasn't able to disable the indexing, it may be because I had other programs running in the background I'm not sure. I can try again later. What does "indexing service" do anyway? 8. I have changed my setting to this.
Thanks for the number-by-number reply. That helps organize what is known, and what has been changed. Please Ran and post a fresh PCPitstop Full Test TechExpress. We should be able to see your changes reflected in the Results. I'll be replying to your above post, but gotta run right now. Best Regards PS: Cool that you were able to get the 2nd gig of RAM. :)
Nice Improvements, Stacey!
_________

Is your Drive G:\ a separate Hard Drive? Maybe a an External HD?
Read/Write access speed seems awfully slow.
Do you have DMA enabled in that Drive's Conroller?
_________

When you adjusted for "eye candy" you selected "Custom".
Did you do that for your own specific preference?
Try "Adjust for Best Performance". <— Let us know if that works for you.
_________

You turned-off Paging of Kernal (Swap File).
Lots of "gamers" like to do that because their RAM is so much faster than using Hard Drive Swapped resources.
And now since you have 2gb RAM you'll probably be just fine with that.
However, if you find applications "stalling" when you are heavily multi-tasked, you may need "some" PagingFile/Swap.
You could Select to have Windows manage Virtual Memory as needed to solve that if it occurs.
________

Is your internet connection subscribed through AOL?
You almost certainly do not need WAOL.exe (a backup version) to be running actively.
In fact, you don't need any of the AOL utilities running. Your Browser/email/IM will continue using the AOL broadband connection. But all the AOL stuff is truly "duplicate bloat" over-top of IE, that IE is already doing for you.
I'll stop "nagging" about AOL for now. Sorry.
_____________

Your Ping is still problematic.
Cleaning up your wiring, "may" improve that situation.
Are you in a "very rural" neighborhood?
Problems with Ping generally don't appear, unless dealing with extreme distances, like from Australia to the US. Or if the Phone Company wiring/NIC box on the outside of your house is old/faulty. Or is you have very long extensions running from your Phone Jack to your Modem. If your own efforts inside the house don't improve the situation, you may benefit from having someone from the Phone Company come out to inspect their part of the wiring.
Still, you have GREAT broadband speed.
The only problem with your Ping situation, is that you may occasionally experience corrupted downloads and broken "streaming media" due to Packet Loss.
_________

"Indexing" is a Microsoft service that runs in the background to constantly keep an exact record of changes to files that you save and adjustments you make. "Indexing" supposedly makes it faster when you use the "Search" functions of your Windows Explorer. — I've never seen much benefit though.
________

Do you know how to take a ScreenShot?
For example, here's a shot of the System Configuration Utility Panel (MSCONFIG) from the machine I'm using right now.
[external image: Posted Image]

I'd like to have a look at your MSCONFIG Panel.

To ScreenCapture "specifically" the MSCONFIG Panel, without any background of your desktop appearing, –
Hold down the ALT Key, then press PRINT SCREEN.
Next Open - Paint - Select Edit - Paste
Save the image and upload it.
There's a link to PhotoBucket that I recommend in my signature below.

If you post an image of your MSCONFIG, I may be better able to assist with items you can safely disable.
___________

One more little nag about AOL.
Since you already have very competent AntiVirus protection via TrendMicro, having the AOL sponsored McAfee running on the AOL connection is "overkill" and could be contributing to the Ping problem.
Consider uninstalling the AOL free tools. (they do some "adware" snooping with their utility package, that I also don't like (almost like spyware, but legitimate, because you agreed to it by using the AOL security tools)
________

How's your machine performing now?

Best Regards
