First time here and I need some help. I recently ran spybot as part of y normal routine and it reports that I have win32.agent.pz and several other nasties including mediaplex adrevolver and others. I clicked to fix the problems and it fixes all but the win32.agent. I tried letting it run as soon as I reboot, but that did not work either. Also the ones that it supposedly fixed come back. I need help. Thanks in advance

Hi MrKez. .Welcome to the TomCoyote Forums I am mschroe919 and I am going to read your log. I would like to help you So if you would…. Please be patient and I will be back as soon as possible.. Thanks mschroe919
Hi MrKez.,
I read your log and there is a Trojan-Spy.Win32.Agent.pz present .
Before we do anything else lets attack the trojan. Then we will
do the cleaning of the rest.
Some of these programs I will suggest you may have, I see no
signs of them. So lets start here:

First:

Open task Manager (alt+ctrl+del) and click the process’s tab
Highlight the following if found:

ntos.exe,

then click end Processes.
Not to worry if not there
NOTE:
It’s advised not to stop a system process. Stopping a system process can cause the computer to hang or freeze up.So be careful
NEXT:.
Please lets make all files visble…Here is how:

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

NEXT:
Close all open windows, close browser and disconnect the internet

Open the HJT program.
Then run HJT
Click the do a system scan and save a log file.

when open put a check by the following:
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @xpsp3res.dll,-20001 - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked

NEXT:
Restart your PC.
After restart :
Use windows explorer to find and delete these files in RED if still there:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe

NEXT:
(if you don't have AD-Aware SE)

from…
http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=506

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check and make Green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries in the registry or bad files, you will receive a list of what it found in the window

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found

(Wait for the reboot till we do the following and at end I will tell you to reboot)

NEXT:

1. Downloaded install and run Spybot S&D, Get it here:
http://majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

2. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D

4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the Updates.

5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window

7. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.

8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

9.REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory

NOW OK TO REBOOT
There will be more to do but I would like to see a new HJT log before we go again.
Also let me know how your pc is doing.
Good luck mschroe919
I followed your instructions and I am having trouble getting rid of that ntos.exe. It did not show up in task manager, so I did not get to to do that step. I ran HJT and clicked to delete those items you marked. It deleted the O9 listings you said, but it would not fix the F2. I ran HJT again and it still showed the F2. I tried deleting the ntos.exe from windows/sys32 and it kept telling me that it was in use. I checked task manager again and it did not show up. I even tried to do this in safe mode. Please advise. As far as I can tell, I am not having any adverse effects from this other than it showing up on spybot. Thank you for answering so quickly.

Am I ok now? You did say there was others to do? It seems to be running ok. Spybot did find that win32.agent.pz on the last run, but it did clean it off. I do not see it on the hjt.
Ok I finally got that accursed ntos to delete. I hope. I ran adaware and spybot and the others as instructed. Here is my new HJT.

Hi MrKez
Good work pat yourself on the back.
You got rid of the Trojan-Spy.Win32.Agent.pz
The ntos.exe was he execution command for the trojan.
The others I mentioned were malware and they are gone for
now. If you follow the steps below they will have a difficult time
to come back.
QUESTION:
When you used the Killbox did you put in both?
I just want to know , its gone that the main thing.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe You can put it in with and without the comma at the end of exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,

These are the steps I give to everyone after log is deemed clean:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

====================================================================

Use an Anti Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See these links for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
If you don't have one here are some of the better AV products.

Symantec/Norton Antivirus: http://www.symantec.com/nav/nav_9xnt/
Kapersky AV: http://www.kaspersky.com/buyonline.html?info=25
Nod32 : http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm
Panda AV: http://www.pandasoftware.com/
McAfee Virusscan: http://us.mcafee.com/root/package.asp?pkgid=100
AVG Anti-Virus (Free version available) http://www.grisoft.com/

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
============================================================
NEXT:

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
If you don't have one see link below for a free firewall:

ZoneAlarm:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata….jsp?lid=nav_za

Sunbelt Kerio:

================================================================================

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software

Get the download and tutorial for Spybot S&D here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html
=========================================================================

Install Ad-Aware
Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. The download and tutorial on installing & using Ad-aware can be found here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial48.html

====================================================================

Install SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
========================================================================

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Happy surfing the net

I only ask one thing….please
Please post back and let us know what you think about our forum, we are all volunteers and would like a little smile.

Good luck and happy surfing.

When I ran killbox, I did insert both lines. I had to click on the 'delete upon reboot' button to finally kill it dead. I did run that a few times afterward just to make sure.

I did return folder view to normal. And I will check those IE settings. I think I have done most of those.

I do run spybot, but not teatimer. I foolishly turned it off. I will be turning it back on. I do run adaware. I do run avast for my AV. I will get the spyware blaster and and a firewall. I just thought that I did not need one since I am on slow dialup.

Thank you so much for your help. Your response was very fast and you patiently explained how to do things without being superior. (I have seen that happen). I will be using TomCoyote a lot more. You have made me very happy:thumbup:
Everything seems to be in working order now. I have another issue for another thread, but spyware is gone. You can close this thread. Thanks again for helping. :thumbup:
