First off, the system having "issues" belongs to the Company President!

It has multiple problems:

Popups despite IE Explorer v7 having popup blocker enabled.

Music (really bad music at that) starts playing spontaneously. Seems it is able to open a hidden instance of IE Explorer that plays the music and it is visible only in Task Manager.

Systems frequently freezes, no Task Bar visible, can't shut down except with power button.

I posted at another website but got no response in several days, so I killed that post and am here begging for help!

Ran a fresh HJT this am from "Safe Mode" see below. Need help ASAP, as the BOSS is not a happy camper.

Thanks in advance,

Hi,BMS9347and welcome to Tom Coyote forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

In the meantime can you run me a new HJT scan in normal mode

Thanks for your patience!
dan
Dan,
Quote: "Thanks for your patience"

Are you kidding me? I got a reply in less than 2 hours! Thanks for your prompt attention sir.

While I was waiting I read through several threads that sounded similar to my situation. So I downloaded VundoFix.exe and ran it. It found the 2 lines:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2c6032c3-b815-4fdd-8e67-900e79ce9386} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\c_1ser.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D38439EC-4A7F-42b4-90C2-D810D7778FDD} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp18.tmp.dll

When Fix was checked it seemed to eliminate them.

I have allready shut off the XP restore feature until this is fixed.

See fresh HJT log ran in normal mode below per your request and thanks again!

Dan, System Restore was shut off several days ago when I first started to clean this system. I have not touched it since. I am confused by your last request: "Leave it alone" Do I do nothing or turn it back on?
Hi,BMS9347, sorry for confusion only we need to re-enable your system restore facility, a corrupted back up is better than non at all. If anything should go wrong during the fix and windows refuses to boot then the only other option would be a system format which is something we want to avoid at all cost. :( My work is being checked over at the moment, once that's been done I will post on to you. Thanks dan
Hi BMS9347

It's Important that while I'm working your log, that you carry out my Instuction.
These fixes are specific to Individual pc's.
Can you post the vundo txt that you ran? if not, can you run the scan again for me.
____________

First thing to address, your log shows that you have two different antivirus programs installed and running side-by-side (eTrust Antivirus and AVG7 ).
Do not attempt to run two entirely different 'on-access' resident scanner anti-virus products simultaneously. It is simply an accident waiting to happen. Having more than one antivirus program running and "active in memory" will most definitely use far more additional resources, adversely affecting your access to files and causing overall system slowdowns.

Most of the popular anti-virus products (when running together) will "fight for control" over the user's machine, and it is this conflict that will create slowing the system speed as well as other serious compatibility problems. This can also create registry conflicts as well as causing false virus alerts - or worse, missing alerts entirely!

Additionally, many of these types of programs simply do not "play nice" or work well with each other. Unfortunately, the only thing many of these types of security applications seem to detest more than potentially harmful viruses - is other antivirus applications running simultaneously together with them. Also, not all AV programs can be installed as secondary scanners, and sometimes installing separate AV programs will cause a conflict or the program's installer will even try to 'uninstall' any other anti-virus programs during the installation.

Therefore, my advice would be to pick one (or the other) of your antivrius programs to use and then use Windows Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the one that you do not want to use anymore.

______________

Download haxfix.exe
and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
  • Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"
  • Click "Next"
  • When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
  • Click "Finish"
A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:
1. Make logfile
2. Run auto fix
3. Run manual fix
E. Exit Haxfix
  • Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter
  • Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt > (c:\haxfix.txt)
  • Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread.

____________________

If you already have this vundofix downloaded, you don't need to download again.
However I would like to see the log it produced!

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Please include new HJT log, logfile of haxfix and vundofix.txt
in your next post
Thanks dan
Dan,
Thanks again for your assistance.

Per your instruction, I have uninstalled the AVG AV Program.

I have also turned System Restore back on.

Remove Logitech Desktop Messenger from Add/Remove Programs. It's supposed to be checking for updates, but it's just another unnecessary backweb piece of junk as far as many experts are concerned. If all the O18 entries are fixed, they will most likely just propagate again. I would suggest removing Logitech Desktop Messenger as a recommended optional removal. Smile

Your log shows that MSConfig is running at startup. This indicates that you may be using "diagnostic startup" rather than "normal startup" to stop something from running. While this is normally OK, it is possible that you have disabled something that will affect how we fix your malware problem.
While disabled, it will not show up in the HijackThis log.

Go to Start > Run and type Notepad

Dan, Yes attco.local is our company's domain name I got to the part about copy/paste the quoted lines into Notepad about MS Config. However, I'm thinking something was left out of your instruction as after I do this, the next step is to post the txt in my next post??? I'm thinking I need to run this command to extract some text from the registry, but I'm not clear what you want exactly. I have done the other items on the list but will await your further advice on the above item.
Dan, I have to take Friday off for medical treatments but will pick back up on Monday. Have a nice weekend and thanks again for all your help. Bryan
Hi,BMS9347,

That was me, trying to get your post off quickly

Your log shows that MSConfig is running at startup. This indicates that you may be using "diagnostic startup" rather than "normal startup" to stop something from running. While this is normally OK, it is possible that you have disabled something that will affect how we fix your malware problem. While disabled, it will not show up in the HijackThis log.

Go to Start > Run and type Notepad
Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is unchecked.

regedit /a /e %systemdrive%\regkey.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig"
notepad %systemdrive%\regkey.txt
del /q %systemdrive%\regkey.txt

Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "mslook.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)
Locate mslook.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your reply. When you close Notepad the CMD window will close automatically and the text file will be deleted.

Hope things go well for you with your medical treatment ;)
I will await your returning logs.
Have a good weekend too.
Regards dan
Dan,
I apologize for draging this out.

I had to take Monday off as well, so back to it this morning.

This machine IS in diagnostic startup as when we started trying to fix this machine several un-needed programs were uninstalled and we ended up with something trying to run at startup but unable to start due to missing files. As this was the least of our problems we just set it not to run at startup via MSConfig.

Here is the text of the file:

I see you're running the new Trend Micro HijackThis! beta version. We in the forums prefer at this time not to use it, until they have ironed out all the wrinkles, so would you please download the older version, 1.99.1 and run a new log.

Please download HijackThis! SetUp from here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double-click the HijackThis! SetUp icon to begin the installation. Follow the prompts for the default install location of:'C:\Program Files\HijackThis'. Tick the 'Create a desktop' button when the option appears. Select next, then allow HijackThis! to start.

Do me a further scan as before

Thanks dan
