HELP PLEASE
Hey Dave, Keeps tellin me that my key is not valid. This I am sure is a problem, correct? Its not letttin me install the Sp1a update.I m not really sure how that can be. I have a legit copy of XP. I would reformat but my cdrom isnt working. Thanks, Half
Hi Half,

If you're sure that your copy is legit you can try to contact Microsoft to see if they will help you.

You may want to check out this link to see if it helps.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=908440

As far as you HJT log goes. I'm not seeing anything malicious, which is rather surprising considering the lack of any security updates.

Here is my canned speech for clean computers with some links that may also help.

There are many issues that can contribute to reduced performance. Here are a couple of good links with some great suggestions on speeding up performance.

http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiem…owcomputer.html
On step 4 in this link I highly recommend using ATF Cleaner. It's a great tool for cleaning up temp. files, cookies, cache, ect…

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Here are a couple more great links:

If you do suspect that there is Malware present then I suggest downloading and running AVG Anti-Spyware.
Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program. The program can still be used after 30 days but loses some of the features such as real time scanning.
  • Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Then click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot!
Post the report back here if anything is found and I'll be happy to take a look.

Another tool you can run is System Cleaner by Trend Micro. Follow this instructions from this link to download and run the tool.
http://esupport.trendmicro.com/support/vie…entID=en-125991

Try these suggestions and let me know how you make out.

Regards,
Dave

Hey Half,

Not totally sure why the cleaner is failing…maybe because of the lack of updates.

Let's run a virus scan.

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log
Here ya go dave.

Only thing found is in a restore point which we can clean up. Also, a couple of Active X controls that you should remove:

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/1450/ftp…02/cpbrkpie.cab
O16 - DPF: {A7EA8AD2-287F-11D3-B120-006008C39542} (CBSTIEPrint Class) - http://offers.e-centives.com/cif/download/bin/actxcab.cab

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

Post a new log for one more review. The main thing to be concerned about now is how easily you will be re-infected without any updates. Any luck contacting MS?

Regards,
Dave

I havent contacted Microsoft yet. My comp is old and I was debating just getting a whole new one. In fact if you have any soggestions on what kind, it would be much appreciated. I am a die hard game player, and would like some suggestions as long as they arent extremely expensive. Thanks for all your help my brother.
I have been building my own from scratch for over 10 years now so I'm not really up on the market…other than what I see for Ads and such. Good luck, Dave
