Hello MikeHawk2008 and welcome to the forums here at Tom Coyote.

Well your friend left you with a Trojan that has rootkit functionality. There is a good chance that we can clean this up but with this type of infection there are no guarantees. There may be things that no scanner or tools will find that are left behind and the only way to guarantee that your clean is to reformat/re-install Windows. If you would like to continue with the fix then please do the following:

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on this:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sysvx.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysvx.exe

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Using Windows Explorer delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysvx.exe<–File

——————————————————–

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

———————————————————-

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log

Also, you appear to be running more than one Antivirus, Norton and AVG. This can cause many issues including system slow down, conflicts, ect…
You can keep both installed but just use one for real-time scanning and disable the other. The disabled program can still be used for one-time scans.

In general you never want to run 2 Anti-Virus or Firewall programs at the same time. Other types of Spyware protection such as Spybot, SpywareBlaster, ect… are usually OK (and recommended) to have multiple programs running for layered protection.

Regards,
Dave

Hello Mike,

Please do the following:

1) Please download the Killbox.
Save it to the desktop and run it.

2) Select Delete on Reboot, and then click the All Files button. That button should now flash on and off with a green color.

3) Copy the text in the code box below to the clipboard by highlighting it and pressing Control-C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy)::
C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Filters\IEFilter.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Filters\IExpl32d.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Filters\MSIEHelper.dll
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB917422$\kernel32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\hflt_ipf.sys
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\uyvsbdwr.exe
4) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

5) Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.After rebooting, open up Killbox again. Click File -> Logs -> Actions History Log
Post this log in your next reply.
So when I highlight the code and copy it, it automatically sends it to the clipboard? When I clicked on paste from clipboard it only did C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\uyvsbdwr.exe and C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB917422$\kernel32.dll. So i deleted those two but I don't know what to do with the others. On the following files the part where it says John isn't how it is shown on my computer, I changed it to John so that my real name wasnt shown. I'm guessing that thats why it didn't work. Is there any other way to do it. C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Filters\IEFilter.dll C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Filters\IExpl32d.exe C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Filters\MSIEHelper.dll Thanks for the help. Here is the log: Pocket Killbox version 2.0.0.881 Running on Windows 2000 as (Administrator) was started @ Thursday, March 22, 2007, 3:37 AM # 1 [Delete on Reboot] Path = C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB917422$\kernel32.dll # 2 [Delete on Reboot] Path = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\uyvsbdwr.exe I Rebooted @ 4:20:54 AM Pocket Killbox version 2.0.0.881 Running on Windows 2000 as(Administrator) was started @ Thursday, March 22, 2007, 4:36 AM
You can manually go and delete those using Windows Explorer.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Please reverse this process once the fix is complete.

Delete these files: Just substitute the real name for "John" in the path.

C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Filters\IEFilter.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Filters\IExpl32d.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Filters\MSIEHelper.dll

Also, this one wasn't deleted either:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\hflt_ipf.sys
I was unable to find:C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Filters\IEFilter.dll C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Filters\IExpl32d.exe C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Filters\MSIEHelper.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\hflt_ipf.sys Maybe they got deleted somehow. Do I need to run another scan to make sure that they are gone.
Did you change the file path to whatever name is correct (not John)?

Let's run a rootkit scanner considering what was found.

Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there…
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply.
I did change the file path name to the correct one when I searched for those files. So I should't proceed with step 2 cleaning. I only hit next once after it was done scanning. 03/22/07 15:52:35 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.55 initialized 03/22/07 15:52:35 [Info]: OS: 5.0 build 2195 (Service Pack 4) 03/22/07 15:52:36 [Note]: 7019 4 03/22/07 15:52:36 [Note]: 7005 0 03/22/07 15:52:46 [Note]: 7006 0 03/22/07 15:52:46 [Note]: 7011 816 03/22/07 15:52:47 [Note]: 7026 0 03/22/07 15:52:48 [Note]: 7026 0 03/22/07 15:52:48 [Note]: 7024 3 03/22/07 15:52:48 [Info]: Hidden process: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE 03/22/07 15:52:49 [Note]: 7024 3 03/22/07 15:52:49 [Info]: Hidden process: C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsof 03/22/07 15:52:49 [Note]: 7024 3 03/22/07 15:52:49 [Info]: Hidden process: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe 03/22/07 15:53:32 [Note]: FSRAW library version 1.7.1021 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\I 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 10002 3 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\I 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 10002 3 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Info]: Hidden file: C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\I 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 10002 3 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\I 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 10002 3 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\I 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:53:36 [Note]: 10002 3 03/22/07 15:53:37 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\I 03/22/07 15:53:37 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:53:37 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:53:37 [Note]: 10002 3 03/22/07 15:53:37 [Note]: 10002 3 03/22/07 15:53:37 [Note]: 10002 3 03/22/07 15:53:37 [Note]: 10002 3 03/22/07 15:53:37 [Note]: 10002 3 03/22/07 15:53:37 [Note]: 10002 3 03/22/07 15:53:37 [Note]: 10002 3 03/22/07 15:59:03 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\hd_dirs.cfg 03/22/07 15:59:03 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:59:03 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:59:03 [Note]: 10002 1 03/22/07 15:59:03 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\hd_files.cfg 03/22/07 15:59:03 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:59:03 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:59:03 [Note]: 10002 1 03/22/07 15:59:03 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\hd_proc.cfg 03/22/07 15:59:03 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:59:03 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:59:03 [Note]: 10002 1 03/22/07 15:59:04 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\hd_rkeys.cfg 03/22/07 15:59:04 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:59:04 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:59:04 [Note]: 10002 1 03/22/07 15:59:04 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\hd_rvals.cfg 03/22/07 15:59:04 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:59:04 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:59:04 [Note]: 10002 1 03/22/07 15:59:04 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\hd_self.cfg 03/22/07 15:59:04 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:59:04 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:59:04 [Note]: 10002 1 03/22/07 15:59:05 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\hflt_ipf.sys 03/22/07 15:59:05 [Note]: 7002 0 03/22/07 15:59:05 [Note]: 7003 1 03/22/07 15:59:05 [Note]: 10002 1

No please go ahead and let it clean what it finds.
I went ahead and let it clean what it had found, is there anything else that I need to do from this point? Thank you so much for your help so far.
No I believe we got it. But as I said at the beginning of the thread you never know with rootkits. Post a fresh HJT log for review to make sure. Dave

Hi Mike,

Yes, some more cleanup to do and it still appears you have 2 Antivirus programs running as I had mentioned earlier. Is that so?

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.

Dave
I went ahead and deleted the avg antivirus. Can I delete all the programs that I have downloaded such as killbox, blbeta, atfcleaner and any saved logs from those programs. Under the Hidden files and folders heading should I uncheck Show hidden files and folders and check Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
