To Whom It May Concern:

You peeps were able to help me last time with a SmitFraud infection. Last night I was on the phone with a buddy and her Spybot found it on her pc as well. I still have access to the steps I was given on this site to help me with my situation, but seeing as how each pc is different, just figured I'd go the safe route and ask for help from you guys just in case there's anything out-of-the-ordinary (plus, I wouldn't want to screw up her computer any more than it might already be).

I've already downloaded SmitFraudFix and AVG Anti-Spyware, got 'em on standby. AVGAS isn't updating though, so just I downloaded the update file from ewido.

I'm Bob4, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, or save them as a txt document on your desktop as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

I see no idications of smitfraud.
What I do see that is a NO NO is 2 active antivirus programs running.
They will interfere with each other and leave you more vunerable as if you had none.
I suggest you remove one of them now.
If you have a subscription to only 1. I would keep that one. I will leave which one to keep up to you.

______________________________________________________

Next I see your using the new Trend Micros version of HJT.
It is still realy in Beta stages with a few bugs. For now I would like you to remove it and download HiJackThis 1.99.1 from here

Hey,

That was a fairly long process. But, it's gotta be done.

There are no other User Accounts on the pc. A also removed McAfee and kept Norton per your request. Previously McAfee wouldn't uninstall, and it was being stubborn again. I uninstalled it manually via the instructions here: http://ts.mcafeehelp...asp?docid=71525

Here's the HiJackThis log with version 1.99 (there's another one also at the end).

[2 of 5] Then I ran CCleaner, left all the default options checkmarked. I saved the log for CCleaner, it's incredibly long so if you want the whole report then I'll post it. [3 of 5] Next was deleting Firefox cookies, but it really didn't have much so I didn't need to keep anything. However, I couldn't find the "Only delet files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours" option. Not in the Advanced tab or any of the other ones, not in IE either. In IE, I deleted cookies and Temporary Internet Files using the Tools>Options menu. Installed, updated AVG Anti-Virus. Ran in Safe Mode while ensuring everything was checked/unchecked per your instructions. Here's the AVGAS log: --------------------------------------------------------- AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report --------------------------------------------------------- + Created at: 4:45:22 AM 3/21/2007 + Scan result: HKU\S-1-5-21-374535143-3425627440-1918274601-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.sti\OpenWithList -> Adware.AlfaCleaner : Cleaned with backup (quarantined). And finally, ran HiJackThis one last time. Whoah, quite tired. The problems I'm still having are (other than the stuff Kaspersky found):

-that the computer boots incredibly slowly,
-the browsers are extremely sluggish to launch,
-there's a blank entry in MSConfig with path "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
-when shutting down, I get "End Program - hpcmpmgr.exe" . . . then "not responding" have to "End Now"

note: I had previously downloaded SmitFraudFix and installed it, but have not used it on this machine. I noticed the Kaspersky infection counter went up when it was in that folder. So maybe Kaspersky thinks SmitFraudFix is an infection? I'm sure you know better than I.

Here's the HiJackThis log after all previous steps were complete.

Heres what we found thus far. Spybot did indeed find a Zlob active x and removed it.
This is on the computer but doesn't look active so nothing to worry about there.
Lets get rid of the bugger.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files::

Click Start. My Computer.
Select the Tools menu Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Search for and remove
Now I want you to search for and delete the following folder and all it's contents if present. If you need help finding them.
Click start /search/ all files and folders/ look for More advanced options. once in there select the first 3 boxes.
Please just remove the files/folders I listed in BOLD

You need to update SunJava for security reasons.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6... allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.

You have iTunesHelper.exe running at Startup. iTunesHelper.exe is a process belonging to Itunes MP3 streaming tool
by Apple which allows you to play MP3's. This process speeds up iTunes when it starts, and the program also monitors
for connected iPod devices. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it.
It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis.
This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe

You have QuickTime running at Startup. This is QuickTime's system tray icon and not necessary for the program to function properly. It is considered to be a resource hog.
You will still be able to start it manually if you need it. You can fix this with HijackThis, but you will need to change the setting in QuickTime
Player itself to keep it from resetting itself.. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

RealPlayer
You have RealPlayer running at Startup. This is RealPlayer's autoupdate program and is not necessary for the program to function properly.
It is considered to be a resource hog. You will still be able to start it manually if you need it.
You can fix this with HijackThis, but you will need to change the setting in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself..
This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Heres something from HP on the shut down error.

Hey, How exactly do I get to: C:\Documents and Settings\WE SHiNE\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst/Personal Folders/Inbox/WE SHiNE/Accounts/9b018 Dec 2004 21:56 from Washington Mutual:0fficial Information ??? Once I get to the .pst file, I'm guessing the rest of the paths are what you see in Outlook (Indox & folders). Navigating via Explorer, I can only get as far as the .pst file. Using Start>Search won't bring it up either even with all the options checked. So do I open the .pst file in Notepad and delete the entry? Or do I go into Outlook, locate the message and delete it?

If you can find that message in your in box delete it from there. Just let me know if you can do it from there. Looks as if you should be able to.
