Please don't abandon me now. The McAfee link is just generic information and doesn't help. How would you attempt to get the file back?

I will not abandon you! Please do not be upset with my having you run DrWebCureit. How did you obain McAfee in the first place? Did you purchase and download it online or do you own some disks that you installed it from? Do you have everything (userid and password for McAfee) that if you uninstalled it you can install it again?

I am not upset with you in the least! I really appreciate the assistance you have given me SO MUCH! My internet service is with Comcast and the McAfee antivirus comes free with the Comcast service. If there is another antivirus available free I would gladly switch if the protection it provides is at least equal to McAfee.

Sorry, my last post didn't fully answer your questions. I downloaded McAfee from the Comcast site and yes I can reinstall it if I need to.

The information will help me to see what McAfee items you have.

Please do the following:

STEP 1.
======
Uninstall Manager

Let's see if we can find out what it got installed with.
  • Open HijackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
  • Click on the button "Save list"
  • Copy and past the List from notepad into your post

Shut-down the McAfee Security Center. Go to the Control Panel => Add/Remove programs and Remove the McAfee Security Center It should uninstall the McAfee products and I believe that your computer may need to restart to finish it. Then please post (reply) with a hijackthis log. I want to see what McAfee folders are remaining.

Is there any McAfee icon in the lower right corner of the screen? It may be black square with a white M or red square with a right M? Just highlite it if it is there and right-click and there should be some option to shut-it down if it is active. Maybe it is not active? If you cannot find it just proceed to Add/Remove and remove the McAfee Security Center.

It looks good. I see no references to McAfee in your log. Now please download and install the McAfee. You may need to restart your computer after the installation. Please post (reply) with a hijackthis log. I want to see if the McAfee entries are back.

I see the McAfee items! Does the McAfee icon show up red with the white M inside in the lower corner of your screen? I think everything is fine!

I just see a couple of incomplete do-nothing entries in the hijackthis log to fix.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.
