Hi cortspop,

Yes go ahead and let AVG perform the actions.

I am sorry but your log looks like the log you first posted that was infected. I do not know what happened. It looks like you did a system restore to an earlier time where you were infected.

Disable TeaTimer:
Please disable TeaTimer as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean. To disable TeaTimer:
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu , and make sure "Advanced Mode " is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer " and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable TeaTimer again.
======================

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
backd.exe<=file

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

When I searched for the files in Windows Explorer none of them were present (as was the case before). Is this usual?

It does seem strange that you cannot find the files to delete. It may be that the files really do not exist but just the entries in hijackthis just reappeared. Maybe all that happened was the registry entries appeared again thus causing the entries to show in hijackthis again?

Shut down TeaTimer and I would uninstall SpyBot. Let's clear up the problems with the logs first.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {227B8AA8-DAF2-4892-BD1D-73F568BCB24E} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3EC8255F-E043-4cae-8B3B-B191550C2A22} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {BCC0FF27-31D9-4614-A68E-C18E1ADA4389} -

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

I need you to run a virus scan now to double-check. AVG trial expired.
Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
    Posted Image
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

I am confused by this last instruction. " Shut down TeaTimer and I would uninstall SpyBot. Let's clear up the problems with the logs first." What is the first step? How do I "shut down Tea Timer"? I thought it was already turned off. Also, do I clear up the problems with the logs before uninstalling Spybot?

I am sorry about the confusion. Please just uninstall SpyBot. Then do all the hijackthis fixes. Run DrWebCureit, etc. Do not install SpyBot until I give instructions to do so. I am wondering if TeaTimer problems could be related to those entries showing in the hijackthis log again.

The short Dr. Web scan found a virus (mcupdmgr.exe). I was not asked if I wanted to cure it. Do I continue with the instructions and leave the file there or how do I proceed??

mcupdmgr.exe may be a good file. Let's abandon Dr. WebCureit for now. But I do want to see the results of a scan.

======
MWAV Scan
Please download MWAV to a convenient location.
This scan only produces a report, it doesn't clean your system. I will analyze the report and recommend a course of action depending on the results.
This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.

Double-click on mwav.exe.
Put a check next to the below items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • Registry
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items", please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.
