Ast*erisks keep coming out in windows that accept text input.*.* If I use backspace to remove the asterisk before the "If" of this sentence, asterisks will just start streaming out. Delete will cause same problem, and th eoriginal * cannot be deleted. This occurs randomly. I can seem to stop it by typing very slowly.* It stops on its own. Sticky k*e*y* *has been eliminated at the problem.

Download Winhelp2002's deldomain.inf to your desktop. http://www.mvps.org/.../DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'
It will not appear to have done anything, thats ok.

Download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.gee.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch.
Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following.
Do this by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.

Be sure to keep SunJava, updated
In Add/Remove programs click on these and press *remove* if listed:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 - 97.99Mb
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 - 143.00Mb
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 - 144.00Mb
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5- 151.00Mb
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04 - 130.00Mb
Or any other outdated J2SE
It is important to remove older versions as these are the ones with the holes in them.
You will be surprised when you go to add/remove to see all of the versions sitting there.
Download Newest >>>> http://www.java.com/...nload/index.jsp
Once installed you can test to see that it is in fact installed >>>>

The problem takes time to appear. It seems that the problem shows up after I have been on for 30 mins to an hour, using keyboard and mouse. It has started after using the keyboard numeric keypad; on other occasions, after right clicking with a mouse. Othertimes, I am not aware of what I have done before I start gettng asterisks coming out. To stop them temporarily (they will start coming out again, in some random time pattern), I open notepad where they keep streaming out, then hold down backspace even after they stop coming. That gives a temporary fix. The problem initiates in an Opera window into which I am typing, or into an IE window (for ex, an imbedded IE window in Quicken..I use Opera for everything I can) as far as I can tell. The problem may initiate in other programs,; I just have been unaware. It then continues in any open window intto which I type. Sometimes asterisks just stream out until I open notepad (where streaming continues) and stop it there. Or sometimes asterisks just get intersperced in text I am typing..one or two after every character, or intersperced randomly, but not streaming. Rebooting sometimes stops this behavior; other times, rebooting has no effect. I continue to get them. Lastly, if I don't see the asterisks when they are streaming out (not looking at the tiny entry place, as in where a URL is typed in a browser, I know it is happening as I hear it via speakers.

I'll let you know when it happens again, as it is so random, I cannot seem to force it.

I'll run the scan tonight. In the meantime, I have not seen any asterisks show up at all, and I have used the computer for hours. One issue: after executing the above instructions and removing the suggested entries, I lost audio. So not asterisks, but no audio either except: I cannot play any audio file with WMP, Quicktime or Jetaudio nor get audio with video files. WMP gives a message saying there is no sound system installed. The other two appear to "play" th efile, but no sound. In the device properties, under volume it says no audio device; however under all the other tabs, it says device is working properly. I opened the options in AIM where one can set sounds for alerts. I can preview the sound on my speakers with no problem. Trying this in others programs gives silence. So no asterisks have shown up, but no audio either after making the above changes.

1. Last night my virus scanner ran, displayed a virus warning:trojan horse download.tbs.4.AL a0018*****************113.exe (asterisks not part of warning message). I tried to* *c/p the error message and ended up shutting down the window (ie th evirus scan). I reran the scan,* and it* showed no virus. This is the first time I have ever received a virus notification.* 2. I have used my computer all day, and no asterisks. Suddenly they started coming out as seen above. I ran hijackthis right after they started appearing. The line after the a0018 kept coming and coming..hundreds of them...I just kept my finger on the backspace key to stop them; what shows now are the ones before I hit the backspace key. I find if I start typing very slowly, the number coming out slows down, then stops, as seen now. In another wiondow (in xplorer2) had a file highlighted; that screen started flashing (it was fast, so hard to see); it appeared that it flashed the window with the one line highlighted, then all but that one line highlighted, back and forth. When many asterisks start streaming out, I hear it via speakers...a stream of rapid sounds like a key was being depressed. I do not notice if just one asterisk comes out. All seems to be behaving while I type this except the first paragraph. I just kept my finger on the backspace key until they seemed to stop (and removed most of what were originally there). In forty-five years of working on computers I have never seen anything like this. Nothing found. It was a clean scan of all media. Yesterday saw no asterisks for the first couple of hours, then they started coming, slowly at first and only interspersed when typing, then a barrage so fast I could not type, only use backspace key to erase as they came.. Slowly, the problem resolved until no more showed up for the rest of the evening. One other symptom: If I do not have the cursor in an active text window, I can hear them. If I then right click in the left panel (tree structure of my system) of Windows Explorer or xplorer2 (which I usually use), that window keeps updating at the rate the asterisks would appear, ie very fast. It looks as if the highlighted line scrolls as this window flickers. I have seen this behavior in other windows (clicking th ecursor in it causes rapid flicker) but now realize this is associated with the asterisk problem.
