Hello JMG514 and Welcome to TomCoyote,

You are running Hijackthis from a temporary file, but Hijackthis should be in a permanent folder to save its backups in case we need to undo any changes.
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00.437\HijackThis.exe

Create a permanent folder and move hijackthis.exe into it. The reason is because hijackthis creates backups and when it's in your temp-folder it can be accidentally deleted.
How do you make a permanent folder:

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then on Program Files.
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Put your HijackThis.exe there.
=============================

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Your log is almost impossible to read... so in notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap before you post(reply) with your log.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Hi JMG514,

Thanks for the fixwareout report. I need to see another hijackthis log.

You are running Hijackthis from a temporary file, but Hijackthis should be in a permanent folder to save its backups in case we need to undo any changes. Please delete the one you currently have.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Dear Susan528, I followed the instructions in your last reply, but I can not boot in safe mode. I have booted in safe mode before and have had no problems. I didn't know what else to do so I just ran the AVG Anti Spyware. It found 22 instances of Trojan.DNSChanger.hg I then went back to ck the HJT log to see if what I had checked off was still gone and it was. I then did some more research and found someone else was told to download AVAST! Antivirus and I did that, which also found the Trogjan.DNSChanger.hg, which it deleted. I ran it again and it was still gone. So then I went back to AVG and ran that anti spyware again and it is still showing up. I then broke the scan down and did a full scan, and then scanned certain files it will let you choose from. The virus is in the memory. So I shut the restore off and ran the software again and quarantined it. I rebooted the system. Did another scan and it was still there. I don't know where to go from here. I didn't do the GMER run bc I couldn't start in safe mode and didn't know if I should. Under the HJT log will be the AVG Anti Virus Report. Oh even tho it says the virus was quarantined and cleaned up it's not....it still shows up in the memory. Thanks
HJT

We got to back track a little. Please do this again. The Wareout infection is showing again in your hijackthis log.

I also believe you may have a rootkit. There are no instructions here for going into Safemode. Please try
this.

GMER
Please create a new subfolder in the Program Files folder called GMER. If you have an older version of GMER installed, you must delete it.
  • Download GMER and extract it to the C:\program files\GMER folder.
  • Please rename the GMER file
Note: You can rename gmer.exe to anything you like as long as you keep the .exe ending.
Run the Gmer.exe renamed program by double-clicking the executable file (gmer.exe) in Windows Explorer.
You may be prompted to scan immediately if GMER detects rootkit activity.
  • If you are prompted to scan your system click "yes" to begin the scan.
  • If you are not prompted, Click the "Rootkit" tab, then click "Scan".
DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

At the end of the scan, click "Copy" to copy the scan results to the clipboard. Then paste the results in a notepad file and also paste them back in your next reply.

Please post (reply) with the results from the GMER scan, and a fresh hijackthis log.

Hi JMG514,

Let's run the AVG Anti-Spyware scan. Your logs are looking much better. How's that computer running now?

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit.
  • Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG Anti-spyware.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.
______________________________

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act?
      • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Under How to scan?
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software:
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports:
      • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan?
      • Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)
      Posted Image
  • When done, click the Save Scan Report button. (4)
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

Hi Susan, The computer seems to be working a little better, but it did shut down w/o warning before. Well I decided to run another HJT log and those two darn RO's are back...here they are... R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = GOOD NEWS THOUGH.....The 017's didn't come back, I didn't know if I should put a ck mark next to those two RO's again in the log.OMG I still have that flipping Trojan.DNSChanger.hg Oh how I wish I could get my hands on people who have nothing better to do except try to infect computers! :rant2: My computer shut down unexpectedly twice during the scan. This is so frustrating...I thank you for the time you're putting into helping me. OK, I am running the AVG again...I am running the memory scan only bc that is where the Trojan showed up all the time, and it's not there. The next one I did was the registry, it's not there. I am doing a quick system scan bc I don't know if my computer will shut off again in the middle of the full system scan. Okay, the little weasel is hiding somewhere in the system now...it just showed up on the fast scan along w/some tracking cookies...I am going to see if I can quarantine it and do another scan. Oh and by the way I can not start in safe mode it just won't let me. I know how to do it, but it's just a blank black screen and the only option that comes up is f8 or press any key to continue, and f8 is not working so I have to press any key to log onto windows. :( I am sending this to you now bc I don't know if I will be able to finish this before this darn thing shuts down again. I will post the new scan next note. Thanks Susan _______________________________________________________________ AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report --------------------------------------------------------- + Created at: 1:04:12 AM 3/18/2007 + Scan result: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@cnn.122.2o7[1].txt -> TrackingCookie.2o7 : Cleaned. Hi Susan, I had to break the scans up just incase the computer shut down again. I did a memory scan, it came out clean, I then did a registry scan and it came out clean, I then did a fast system scan and it came out clean, with the eception of those darn tracking cookies again. I will be happy as long as I don't have that Trojan.DNSChanger.hg again. Full system scan is in progress and so far so good. I do have a question for you though, am I free and clear of that wareout virus? And please let me know if I can delete those two RO's in my last post. OMG NOW I HAVE A NEW TROJAN!! The name of it is....Trojan.DNSChanger.hj This virus is starting to really pisssssssss me off. Can you believe this?!! Here is the report, I am going to bed will have to do another scan tomorrow. I quarantined the trojan, but who knows if the darn thing won't come back as a different file. Thanks Susan. :)
