I have 2 computers on a network behind an SMC7004 router. One recently has been slow on FireFox browser response. Email (Outlook) is fine. Response on the other computer is fine. I have scanned with Ad Aware and Spybot, but that hasn't helped. Would you please look as the scan below and tell me if there are things I should get rid of? My kids use this computer and there is a lot of junk on it.

Thanks for the help. I am still having a problem. As an example, if I scroll down through this message thread, I for 20 to 30 seconds, then go a little farther, and then wait again. Sometimes there is an hourglass and sometimes not. I am only getting this in Firefox, which I use almost all the time. I don't have the same problem in IE. I pasted the new log below.

Hi and thanks for the new log.

Go to Start -- control panel -- Add/Remove Programs and remove the following:
starware347

Download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. Install Ad-Aware using the default options.
Open Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then close it out. Do NOT scan yet.

Download ATF Cleaner.
Do not run it yet, we will shortly.

Now do a full sysytem scan with Ad-Aware and remove everything it finds.Exit Ad-Aware.

Please open HijackThis, click do a scan only and place a check next to the following entries:

Please close all other Windows and browsers,except HijackThis and click Fix Ckecked.Exit Hijackthis.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting
your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

Please delete these file using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\WINNT\system32\wgbuyqva.dll

Now run ATF-Cleaner:

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:

Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser, do this also:

Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Reboot back to normal mode and post a new HijackThis log.

Thank you for your help. It took me a while because I couldn't get XP to boot into safe mode, but I finally did. I then carried out your instructions. The new log is below. Things are working better now. Please let me know if there are further instructions. Thanks again for your help.

Please open HijackThis, click do a scan only and place a check next to the following entries:

Please close all other Windows and browsers,except HijackThis and click Fix Ckecked.Exit Hijackthis.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Next,
Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image

If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Rosty, Thank you for your help. The computer you were helping me with had a problem I couldn't solve and it now being reformatted so XP can be reinstalled. I couldn't boot in safe mode, recover, or use the XP cd to recover in place. I just got the blue screen of death no matter what I did. I got Bart PE and got the files off it I wanted and am starting over. Thanks again for you help. I now have anti-virus software provide by my employer and I hope that will help keep my pc cleaner. Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we at TC are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

AVG-AntiSpyware
Install it,update it to the latest definitions, and perform a full system scan.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.
