Following is a HiJackThis Log for my PC that is experiencing many problems. Can't seem to eliminate pop-ups, and downloads from several sites won't run (download buttons sometimes don't appear). Internet Explorer also opens with a "run once" window everytime, which is blank. The PC had problems before installing McAfee. Installed McAfee, but there were errors during installation. During an uninstall of McAfee, we had a power outage at home and the computer crashed in the middle of the uninstall. I suspect the registry is probably quite corrupted. Cannot use the Windows restore feature ... it does not work. The Windows OS still loads, and I can access the Internet, but with the problems described above. This message is being sent from the problem PC, so it does have some rudimentary capability. McAfee is currently not installed (altough I see references to McAfee in the HiJackThis Log File). Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

I've one question to you:
So you would like to delete mcafee?

Rename HijackThis.exe to Scanner.exe and after that take a new HijackThis log and send it to here :)

Hi Markka, Thank you for your help ... and I appreciate any assistance that you can provide. Regarding McAfee, I would like to completely remove whatever is still installed at this time. My intent, once the machine is back to normal, is to reinstall McAfee. Joe

Kaspersky online scanner works only with IE!

Please run an online scanner with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

    o Scan Options:

    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Markka, Cannot run the Kaspersky Online Scanner. Went to several sites that host the Kaspersky Online Scanner (including the one in your link), and the program will not launch ... I get some type of script error in IE. Joe

Hello and sorry for the delay :(

Run a scan with Dr.Web CureIt :)

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop -> ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Run a scan with Dr.Web CureIt
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, you should now mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable
  • After the scan, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot the computer in Normal Mode,
  • Post the Cure-it report and a fresh HijackThis log

Browser pop-ups appear to be gone ... but IE still opens up to a blank page ... even though a Home Page is set in the options. And, there are still some problems with IE executing scripts on some web pages.

Any ideas why this is happenning?

Thanks,

  • Open AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
  • Click on Change state next to Resident shield.
It should now change to inactive.

Fix these lines with HijackThis:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft....k/?LinkId=54896
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft....k/?LinkId=69157

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,First Home Page = http://go.microsoft....k/?LinkId=54843

Reboot and after that go to change your start page.

Post a fresh HijackThis log and tell to me did that work :)
