Thanks Shelf life for the quick response I appreciate it very much. I installed spyware doctor as well as AVG Free Anti-Virus and ran and removed all infections. When I loaded up HIT and clicked Fix It on winlogin.exe a prompt popped up and said this: Unable to delete the file: O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe The file may be in use. Use Task Manager to shutdown the program and run HijackThis again to delete the file.
So I opened task manager up and tried to end the process manually, but once again i was prompted with this: This is a critical system process. Task Maanager cannot end this process. What is this winlogin.exe isn't something I need from windows to run my computer??????

Anyway heres my new log......

hi greorgy

this:
O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe is malware related

this:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe isnt
notice difference in spelling.

reference:
http://www.liutiliti...brary/winlogin/

http://www.bleepingc....exe-13402.html

http://www.symantec....-081213-3232-99
---------------------------------------------------
you might want to copy/paste this into notepad and save it so you can find/read it in safe mode:

boot you computer into safe mode. you reach safe mode by tapping the f8 key during a computer restart. chose first option form the list: safe mode.

run hjt and have it fix:
O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe

show all files:
for xp:
FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

next:
see if you can find the file winlogin.exe (notice spelling) in the system32 dir, if so delete it
while in safe mode run AVG antivirus and spyware doctor also
------------------------------
reboot computer normally, first stop:
download, install, update and run AVG antispyware here:

http://free.grisoft....0/lng/us/tpl/v5

after you run avg, please reboot computer once and rescan with hjt and post a new hjt log.

Ok a few new things.......

When I went into Safe Mode I was still unable to delete 04 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe. Exact same error messages. I followed your Show All Files instructions with no problems and ran AVG Anti-virus and Spyware Doctor while I was in Safe Mode. I did find winlogin.exe though. I found it in C:\Documents and Settings\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. I'm waiting for you to give me the go ahead so i can delete it , it was not the the system 32 directory. I also found the file winlogin.exeCommon Startup in the folder C:\WINDOWS\pss.....

I'm running AVG Spyware right now, sorry for the delay but these programs take several hours to run on my comptuer.

Here's my new HJT log:

hi greorgy,

thanks for the info. since you can see the file, do me a favor if you would.

download SFP, (Suspicious File Packer)a download link is here:
http://forums.spybot...wthread.php?t=9

unzip it to your destop, doubleclick the icon to run and copy/paste this in the window:
C:\Documents and Settings\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\winlogin.exe
click continue and it will create a .cab file on your desktop.
please email me the .cab file as a attachment to:

echoreply@hotmail(dot)com
------------------------------------------------
go to start>run and type in msconfig -under the startup tab, uncheck anyline that may have winlogin.exe in it.
chose apply, close, then exit without restart
then do this:

delete the winlogin.exe from the startup group items in C:\Documents and Settings\Start Menu......

C:\WINDOWS\pss

this other folder you found it in, pss is a folder? if you see winlogin.exe delete it also from there

also please do a online scan from one of these:

Panda ActiveScan

http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

* Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
* A new window will open...click the Check Now button
* Enter your Country
* Enter your State/Province
* Enter your e-mail address and click send (use a fake e-mail)
* Select either Home User or Company
* Click the big Scan Now button
* If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
* It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
* When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
* When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

or this one:

BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan
http://www.bitdefend...can/licence.php
check AutoClean under Scan Options.
------------------------------
after all that please reboot once, rescan with hjt and post a new log.

hi greorgy, i got your file you sent. it turned out to be a .txt file. i think it was because of its location. but thank you regardless. that last hjt log looks good. for the baddies in the panda scan we can use hjt to delete them. start hjt, click on "open misc tools section" click on "delete a file on reboot" in the file name window, copy/paste: c:\windows\system32\jac.dll then open, at the prompt to reboot select yes. after the reboot do the same thing (copy/paste) c:\windows\mstasks1.exe ------------------------------------- i wouldnt worry about the other items, doing it one by one because iam not sure you can delete multiply files with hjt. shelf life
