Hi,and welcome to Tom Coyote forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!

Hi brokenhead

Update Your Windows XP.
You are currently using an unpatched version of Windows XP.
Before attempting to remove malware, it is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a.
Get SP1a here : http://www.softwarep...s/winxpsp1.html
Do not install service pack 2 untill I tell you it's ok to do so.
________________

There are a few very important security program that you are In need of. These programs are essential to prevent you from getting reinfected:

* Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. Please download and install one antivirus program from the following list, download the latest signatures, and do a full system scan.

o AVG Anti-Virus
o Avast Home Edition
* Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check http://www.bleepingc...ial60.html]This[/url] webpage out. 2 free ones available for personal use:

o Kerio Personal Firewall
o ZoneAlarm

Without these programs, you will be quickly reinfected, and we would just be wasting our time trying to clean your computer.
Please include new HJT log,
in your next post
Thanks dan

Hi Dan, thanks for the advice. I'm running AVG now. Can u tell me if using a router constitutes having a firewall? Thanks, Dave

Hi, Router Firewalls only protect just one way as does xp's own firewall, that's why you also need a third party firewall which is bi-directional. Hope this helps. dan

Hi, I tried AVG and Avast. Looks like Avast was able to get rid of the browser hijacker.

However, I am not able to log in to a couple yahoo mail accounts on this machine for some reason - it says invalid password, but I can log in fine on other machines. I don't know if that is a malware issue but something is messed up and CAPS lock isn't on.

Anyway, here is my latest HJT log. Thanks for your time.

Dave

Hi, brokenhead,

we need to put HJT into a permanent folder.
Create a folder on the desktop, right click on the desktop new folder and name it HJT. Now locate "C:\Documents and Settings\paul\Desktop\HijackThis.exe" right click HijackThis.exe copy and
paste it into the folder you created on the desktop.
The reason I ask for this is, unless HJT is in its own folder it will not make backups and should things not go the way we want them to, we will be able to return to a point where we can start again.

Please do this before starting the fix.
_______________

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Please include new HJT log, and vundofix.txt[
in your next post
Thanks dan

Hi brokenhead

Before we continue I need you to update Windows XP, else were wasting our time!

Update Your Windows XP.
You are currently using an unpatched version of Windows XP.
Before attempting to remove malware, it is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a.
Get SP1a here : http://www.softwarep...s/winxpsp1.html
Do not install service pack 2 untill I tell you it's ok to do so.

post me a new HJT log when done.
