Hello

I'm completely technophobic so please bear with me.

About a week ago I started getting odd pop ups from ameana and other web pages. Strangely they seem to be activated by what I'm searching for or which sites I try to open.

Tried all the usual stuff like running anti virus and spyware. Got several downloads for spyware/adware but none of them picking anything up at all.

Have a demonic 6 year old who has now been blocked from downloading anything and I have removed as much as I can.

I did have Bearshare downloaded, but took it off.

Anyway, hope you can help and here's a copy of my HTJ (I managed that much)

Hi MinxyMissy2,

First, please make a new folder to put your HijackThis program file into. Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. We suggest you use something like C:\HJT. This is to ensure that HijackThis saves backups which can be recovered if needed.
  • Use Windows Explorer to make a new folder - navigate to C:\ and choose File->New->Folder and name it HJT
  • Right click on hijackthis.zip and select Extract all....
  • Extract all to the new folder C:\HJT
  • If you wish to have a shortcut on your desktop, navigate to C:\HJT, right-click hijackthis.exe and choose Send To->Desktop (create shortcut)
Next, please download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe):
https://europe.f-sec...light/try.shtml
- Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
- Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
- It will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.
- The log will have a list of all items found.
- Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
- Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save a the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the Blacklight log, the uninstall log and the new HijackThis log in your next response.

Hi MinxyMissy2,

Ok we have a little cleaning to do! These instructions may look a little complicated at first, but take your time reading them through before starting and if they are unclear the ask me before proceeding. Also it's important that if you have a problem to stop and ask for help.

First please run Blacklight (blbeta.exe) in exactly the same way as before, but when it shows the list of the items found, we want to rename the following entry:

jfimpehcfj.exe

Do this by selecting the filename and pressing the Rename button.
The Action column should now change from None to Rename
Then press Next, OK the warning screen and then choose Restart now and OK again.
Your computer should now reboot.

If you have any problems with this step then please stop here and let me know.

Next download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C: ) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download EGDACCESS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Copy the text in the code box below into notepad and save it with the filename aftermath.bfu
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU) and set Filetype to All files
RegDeleteKey HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\jfimpehcfj
RegDelValue HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run|jfimpehcfj
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\jfimpehcfj_navps.dat
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\jfimpehcfj_nav.dat
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\jfimpehcfj.dat
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\jfimpehcfj.exe
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\jfimpehcfj_m2s.xml
FileDelete %WINDIR%\jfimpehcfj.exe-*.pf
FileDelete C:\Windows\system32\jfimpehcfj.exe.ren

Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon Posted Image and select EGDACCESS.bfu
  • Press Execute and let it do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon Posted Image again and this time select aftermath.bfu
  • Press Execute and let it do it’s job.
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Once complete, reboot your computer and then run Blacklight once more (to make sure one baddie is gone).
- Double click blbeta.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
- It will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.
- The log will have a list of all items found.
- This time do not rename anything I want to see the log to make sure the previous steps were successful
- Exit Blacklight

Next, open a browser and navigate to:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
C:\Windows\RUNXMLPL.exe
Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please copy and paste the results in your next response.

When complete, please post the latest Blacklight log (please double-check that it's the latest log file), the Jotti scan results and a new HijackThis log.

Hi MinxyMissy2,

I'm glad the popups have stopped, that confirms we have dealt with the worst malware on your system. We have a few more things to do:

First press Start->Run, type services.msc into the box and press OK
Find in the list the service named SpywareCleanerService and double-click it.
Change the Startup type dropdown to Disabled, press Apply then press the Stop button.
Then press OK and close the Services console.

Now open HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place a check-mark next to the following lines:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\Userinit.exe
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {37B85A29-692B-4205-9CAD-2626E4993404} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfar...p1.0.0.15-3.cab
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://gamenext.ober...aploader_v6.cab

Now close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked and say Yes to the prompt.
Then press the Config button, the Misc Tools button and then the Delete an NT service button.
Type SpywareCleanerService into the white box, press OK and Yes/OK to any prompts.
Close HijackThis

Now use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following folder (if present):
C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM).
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

I recommend that you remove Viewpoint; however the decision is yours. To uninstall Viewpoint Media Player:
Open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs
Look down the list for Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

As you have AOL installed, if you removed Viewpoint you should do the following to prevent it from being recreated every time you run the AOL software:
  • Open AOL
  • Go to Help on the toolbar
  • Select About AOL
  • Hit Ctrl D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.
Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
I see you have StartUp Manager installed. Are you using this or another program to disable some startup programs? If so that will prevent me from seeing them in the HijackThis log and may hamper my ability to help you. If you can note down what you have disabled or get a report from the program then please post that. Otherwise I have to ask for you to re-enable everything before making a new HijackThis log so I can see if it requires removal.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log along with a new HijackThis log, and let me know about any disabled startup programs.

also I have enabled everything on the Startup Manager. I really don't know why it's there to be honest can I just delete it?? The only thing that was disabled was Bearshare accelerator, which, even though it has been removed/deleted still kept appearing on start up.

My AOL spyware has just run and detected spyware nuker as a keylogger?? It's automatically blocked by AOL but do I need to do anything with it??

Sorry, I seem to be creating more problems than solving them at the moment.

Thanks again, you've been a life (or rather laptop) saver.

Hi MinxyMissy2,

You definitely aren't creating any problems, they are just being uncovered so they can be resolved :)

If you wish to remove StartUp Manager, you can do so by opening Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for StartUp Manager and select Remove.

Spyware Nuker and Easy SpyRemover are antispyware programs which have been categorized in the past as rogue applications. A rogue antispyware program typically uses false positives to goad the user into purchasing a paid version of the program, and usually provides little or no security benefit for the user. Because of their tainted past I would recommend you remove both programs, there are more effective programs available for free. I doubt that Spyware Nuker is in fact a keylogger as detected by AOL, but I can't be sure and removing it is the safest choice. You will not be sacrificing security by doing so.

This page lists details of rogue and suspect anti-spyware products and has more information on them:
http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm

Spyware Nuker, Easy SpyRemover and Bearshare Accelerator are not listed in Add/Remove Programs so for each of these programs you wish to remove:
Check for an uninstaller by pressing Start->Programs, find each program's folder and look inside it to see if there is an option to uninstall. If there is, then select it to uninstall the program.

Now open HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place a check-mark next to the following line (if present):
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Bearshare Accelerator] C:\Program Files\Bearshare Accelerator\Bearshare Accelerator.exe
Now close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked and say Yes to the prompt.

Then use Windows Explorer to navigate to and delete the relevant folders:
C:\Program Files\Bearshare Accelerator
C:\Program Files\Easy SpyRemover
C:\Program Files\Spyware Nuker 2004 (or similar)

Also use Windows Explorer to delete the following file:
C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\My Received Files\Setup.exe

Once complete, reboot your computer, post a new HijackThis log and let me know how you got on.

I have removed everything I found for Bearshare, SpywareNuker and the setup.exe file and everything seems fine.

I can't believe bearshare left files all over the place even though it had been uninstalled. In fact I didn't have any problems until I tried to uninstall it.

When searching for spyware nuker it pulled up a file called "possible virus spyware.bckp" it's in C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-ware\Quarantine 396KB BCKP file. I haven't deleted it because I wasn't sure if it was relevant.

Hopefully I'm all cleaned now.

Thanks again

Hi MinxyMissy2,

Yes it looks like you are all clear now, is your computer running a bit better?

You can leave the possible virus spyware.bckp file, it's a backup of items Ad-Aware has cleaned from your machine.

A couple further things before we finish:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.
Right-click My Computer (from the desktop or Start Menu)
Click Properties and choose the System Restore tab
Check Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then Yes to confirm, you may need to wait a moment while Windows deletes old System Restore Points
Then, UN-Check Turn off System Restore
Click OK

Ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date in the future by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule

You have plenty of protection software installed, but please check that they are set to automatically update their definitions, without the latest updates they are far less effective. Also, as any malware scanner can't detect everything, I recommend occasionally getting a another opinion from an online scanner like Kaspersky which we have used in this thread.

IESPYADS helps protect you from malicious websites by placing a list of known bad websites in Internet Explorer's Restricted Zone. This Zone limits the capabilities of these websites including preventing them from installing software. This will compliment your security software and I recommend you install it:
http://www.spywarewa...uc/resource.htm

Find out how to prevent infection in the future

Please post back to let me know how you got on, and if there are any further issues.

Thank you so much for all your help. Everything seems to be running smoothly now. I'll be making a donation and recommending you to everyone I know. :D You've saved me taking the laptop to a specialist and being charged a fortune. Hopefully I won't need to come back anytime soon. Minxy
