I feel like such a blond :D OK, I click on your link to trend micro, click scan now it's free and that's as far as it gets. The first time I clicked on it the yellow bar came up to install the active x thing, so I clicked the yellow bar and installed it. But then nothing happened, that's when it gets stuck trying to load this page. Nothing comes up about accepting the terms of use and I don't see any buttons at all on the page to launch HouseCall. Am I just being really stupid here?!

OK Susie not sure what's going on. Let's try one other.

Then please run the Panda scan here:

Choose to "Disinfect automatically," and follow the prompts. Delete any viruses found, and restart your computer.

Post a new HJT log and let me know how you make out. Please post a HJT log even if you can't get Panda to run.

OK thanks, I will try that one today. I probably should have said before, but there are two user accounts on this computer - does this make any difference to the scans and the HJT logs? Also, had another shut down last night, this time on the other user account. I had already disabled automatic restart, so this time I got the BSOD. I got the following error message : IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00000050, 0x0000001c, 0x00000001, 0x804E1630) Thanks for your help with this :)

Not really, but you want to work from the Administrator account when making changes during this fix.

I had already disabled automatic restart, so this time I got the BSOD

OK, I'll look into that error and give you some more info. when we're done with the cleaning. It may or may not be related to Malware. It could be a driver issue, hardware issue, ect...

The link I gave you for Panda is not correct. Here is a good one:

Hi, I ran the Panda Scan - it didn't find any viruses but it did find some more tracking cookies etc. It says that it doesn't disinfect tracking cookies so not sure what happens to those. Here is the new HJT log:

Hi Susie,

I wouldn't worry about the cookies. They will re-appear as you surf and can be cleaned up using ATF cleaner (as I showed you earlier in the fix) or Windows Cleanup.

Log looks almost clean. One pretty harmless ActiveX control.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on this:

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

As far as your system errors go I'll give you a couple links with some information around this failure. I will say is that it is typically hardware related (or drivers). If you can think back to when it started and remember any changes that were made just before that may help. IE - you installed a new video card or updated your drivers. Read through the links as they contain quite a bit of useful information for troubleshooting something like this. Considering how intermittent the errors occur it could be kind of trial and error finding out what it is.

Thank you so much for your help with this. I've fixed that one with HijackThis and ran ATF again to clear out the cookies. I intend getting rid of Norton and installing AVG instead. I'll have a read through those links about the other problem and post in the other section if I can't resolve it. Thank you!

Hi Susie,

Hope you were able to get things worked out. In addition to updating and running your current protection you may want to consider the following free tools also:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Spybot: Search And Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Install Ad-Aware - Ad-Aware SE You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.
