I'm getting random restarts on my computer, only happened a couple of times so far but want to sort it out before it gets worse. I get the following message in the event viewer:-

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 2. The system is a Packard Bell Intel ® Pentium ® 4 CPU 3.20GHz, 3.21GHz, 512 MB of RAM

Hi Susie and welcome to the forums. Sorry for the delay in getting to your post.

I'm not sure if your issue is Malware related or not but you do have some present. So let's get cleaned up first and see how things go.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files, cookies, cache, ect...

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.

  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file.
Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon,
    some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode:

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act?
      • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Under How to scan?
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software:
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports:
      • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan?
      • Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
    IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)

  • When done, click the Save Scan Report button. (4)
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
Reboot back into Normal Mode

We are going to use HJT to create a list of your currently installed programs.1. Open HijackThis and click on the Config... button in the "Other stuff" section (lower right hand corner).
2. Click on the Misc Tools button.
3. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
4. Click on the Save list... button.
5. Save the file uninstall_list.txt to a convinient location. This should open Notepad with the list.
6. Please Copy and Paste the list into your next reply.

So at this point please post the log from AVG, the installed programs list, a new HTJ log, and let me know how things are running.

Hi, no problem thanks for getting back to me :)

Ok, I installed AVG. The resident shield and automatic updates both say n/a next to them so I wasn't able to change them. Also, I think I may have accidentally blocked AVG from getting updates so I had to download the bit where it says to manually download the full database. I booted computer into safemode and ran AVG, only thing was I couldn't tell if all the correct boxes were checked as I couldn't see the whole screen, presumably because it was in safemode.

Hi Susie,

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Enviroinment (JRE) 6, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop (12.6 MB).
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi, I'm probably being really stupid now but I can't get this to work. I click on online scanner, install the Active X thing but nothing happens, it doesn't start downloading any files or anything. Am I missing something, is there something else I'm supposed to be clicking as well?

Hi Susie, Is there a yellow bar that appears at the top of your screen after clicking the button? If so then you need to click on that and allow the activeX control to run. You also need to be using IE. I didn't see any other browsers installed you I assume you are but just make sure. Regards, Dave

Hi, yes when I click on the online scanner button, another window opens and a yellow bar appears that says to click to install the Active X. I click on the yellow bar and press install but then nothing happens, the yellow bar just disappears but nothing comes up to say it's downloaded any files, and I can't see any new programs installed. I only have IE. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or not clicking something I should be!

OK let's try a different scanner.

TrendMicro™ HouseCall Java Scan
  • Please go HERE to run the Trend Micro™ HouseCall Scan.
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • If confirmed that HouseCall can run on your system, under Using Java-based HouseCall kernel click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet, click YES.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
Post any details about the scan in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

ok thanks, just at work at the moment but will try when I get home. I am a bit concerned about the Trojan KillAV that it's picked up - will I be ok connecting to the internet on the infected computer? I know I'll have to anyway to download the program but just a bit concerned about it!

So yes, you should be fine.

I'm sorry I'm having real problems with this :( I've clicked on the Trend Micro, scan now it's free button but again nothing is happening. The green bar to load the page gets about half way across and then just stops - I've tried it a few times and the last time I left it for about an hour and when I went back to the computer still nothing :( I tried the Kaspersky one again and no joy with that one still. Sorry about this

Hi Susie,

No problem, we'll get it worked out. Have you adjusted IE to block ActiveX? Let's try this:

1. In IE, click on the Tools button and select Internet Options.
2. Click on the Security tab.
3. Click on the Reset all zones to default level. Click OK and close IE.

Now reboot and please try again.

Sorry, still nothing. I've reset all zones to default level. I click on Trend Micro, scan now. This time nothing came up about active x or anything. I get a page come up with a long grey box on the left hand side that says Status, then underneath that it says Introduction to HouseCall. Confirm Terms of Use and select installation type. Then underneath that it says Updating and starting HouseCall. It doesn't seem to want to get further than five little green bars :blink:

So you select the "Yes, I accept the Terms Of Use" box.
