Hi,

My avg anti-spyware has picked up a Trojan.Pakes virus. Which sounds like it's a nasty one!

It wouldn't delete it but it quarantined it and I 'removed' it. But then of course it reappears in another folder when i've run avg again...

In terms of protection i'm using ZoneAlarm free version. AVG anti virus 7.5 and AVG anti-spyware 7.5

hope you can help!

Here's my HijackThis log:

Hi squidder,

First download CWShredder from here:
http://www.trendmicr.../cwshredder.exe
Run the program, OK the EULA, choose Check for Update then once it is ready, press Fix->, OK any prompts and exit the program once it is finished.

Now open HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place a check-mark next to the following lines (if present):
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.client...fo/bt_side.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://lookfor.cc?pin=10001
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://lookfor.cc/sp.php?pin=10001
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://lookfor.cc/sp.php?pin=10001
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://lookfor.cc/sp.php?pin=10001
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.couldnotf...count_id=153472
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, then close HijackThis.

Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Once complete, please reboot your computer and post the Kaspersky log along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi squidder,

If you didn't have any problems with the instructions up to the Kaspersky scan, then yes, it's possible that what AVG calls trojan.pakes has gone, but unfortunately that we don't yet know that the system is clean.

First open HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place a check-mark next to the following line:
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, then close HijackThis.

Please try a different online scan:
Open this page in Internet Explorer:
http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
Enter your Country, State/Province, enter an e-mail address and click Send.
Select either Home User or Company.
Click the big Scan Now button.
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan.
When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Once complete, post the Activescan report along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi squidder,

We need to use an online malware scanner, most of which use the ActiveX functionality of Internet Explorer to do the job. While I understand you use Firefox normally, is there some reason why you can't use IE for this purpose? You need not worry about the security of the browser when it is used for this purpose.

I recommend you use Internet Explorer and follow either the Kaspersky or Panda online scan instructions I have already posted, however if you wish to use Firefox then open this page:
http://www.trendmicr...tro/default.asp
  • Click Scan Now. It's Free!
  • Read and place a check mark next to-"Yes, I accept the terms of use".
  • Click Launch HouseCall.
  • Select Using Java-Based Housecall Kernel
  • Click Starting HouseCall.
  • Choose: Scan complete computer for malware, greyware and vulnerabilities
  • Click Next.
  • Please be patient, the scan can take a while.
  • When the scan is finished, a summary page will open.
  • Under Cleanup options:
  • Choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click Clean now>>.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
  • Please write down the full path and filename of anything that could not be cleaned/deleted.
Once you have completed an online scan, please post the scan results along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi squidder,

First use Windows Explorer to locate and delete the following file (if present):
C:\Recycled\Q330995.EXE

Then download WinPFind3U.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Post the log file in your next response.
It can be quite long, so please check once you have posted, and if the last line is not < End of Report > then the log is too big to fit into a single post and you will need to split it into multiple posts.

Once complete, please post the WinPFind3u log along with a new HijackThis log and tell me if you got rid of that file.
