Hey Beynac, sorry for all that wasted time. it was my fault as I don't do well with some instructions. I guess I wasn't disabling Spybot correctly. You said Go to tools and something like uncheck resident and I didn't know you had to click that to get it to disable tea timer ha my bad i'm really sorry. I'd like to think i'm pretty computer smart, but it's only been a year since I have been on the computer. But anyways, sorry again for this taking unnecessarily longer than it should have. John

Hi John.

Re. Teatimer: don't worry about it! We got there in the end, which is the important thing. At least it gave me a chance to use WinPFind3 (this was the first time I've used it in a live log - a very useful tool). The latest HijackThis log is clean. :D

--------------------------------------------------------

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/...loads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
--------------------------------------------------------

You can delete the following:
  • SmitFraudFix and its report (c:\rapport.txt)
  • Blacklight and its report
  • WinPFind3u (delete the folder on your desktop)
I suggest that you keep ATF Cleaner and AVG Anti-Spyware as they are useful programs (you don't have to run AVG AntiSpyware in safe mode for routine scans).

---------------------------------------------------------

For safety's sake please re-hide the System Files:
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Advanced Settings:
    • Under Hidden files and folders, select Do not show hidden files and folders
    • Select Hide extensions for known file types
    • Select Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • Click Apply to All Folders
  • Click Yes
  • Click OK
--------------------------------------------------------

Flush System Restore

It would be a good idea to get rid of any possibly infected restore points.

Turn OFF System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
This will create a new, clean restore point.

------------------------------------------------------------

You have a good level of protection on your computer. I suggest that you re-activate Spybot's TeaTimer. Please let me know if you have any questions. If not, I think that we can close this thread.

Good morning John.

That is annoying! I would like to see the latest Spybot report (i.e. the one showing the Zlob Browser Helper Object (BHO). There are two ways of doing this. Pick the one you find easiest. There are two files produced for every scan. The file names show the date and time. Please select the latest one with the extension .txt (e.g. if you ran the scan at 22:30 yesterday the file would be Checks.070316-2230.txt).

-------------------------------------------------------

Method 1

Click on Start then Run and copy/paste the contents of the following into the text box:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\logs\

Click OK. A folder should open showing the Spybot logs and reports. Open the relevant file (see above) in Notepad and make sure that it mentions the Zlob BHO. Copy/paste the report as a reply to this thread.

------------------------------------------------------

Method 2
  • Open Spybot
  • On the top menu bar, click on Mode and make sure that Advanced mode is ticked
  • On the left-hand (Outlook style) menu bar, select Tools (near the bottom)
  • Click the top item (View Report) on the menu that opens
  • Click on View previous report
  • A dialog box will open. Select the latest report (as detailed above)
  • The report will open. Make sure that it mentions the Zlob BHO
  • Select the text of the report and copy/paste as a reply to this thread.
-------------------------------------------------------

Please post:
  • The Spybot report
  • A new HijackThis log

Ha I had to make a new log as I didn't finish the one yesterday due to the cursing and stopping of the scan. But here's the new one.

Something has reinstated all of the registry entries we deleted. This isn't Zlob - as far as I know, no malware would bother to reverse all of the entries. Have you had any warnings from McAfee, Windows Defender or TeaTimer? I suspect that you did not have Windows Defender disabled when you ran the WinPFind3u fix. It is still shown in the HijackThis log following the fix. I would like you to uninstall it while we redo the registry fix. You can re-install it later if you wish.

Please go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall Windows Defender.

We need to temporarily disable Spybot S&D 'TeaTimer' as it may interfere with the fix. Please do the following:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools then Resident
  • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
Please let me know if you are uncertain of these instructions. It is vital that TeaTimer is disabled.

Reboot your computer.

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

Hey Beynac. I'm pretty sure I had Defender disabled during the fix. I might have had it turned back on for the log. I haven't had any warnings except when this first got onto my system. Then they all said they removed or quarantined the item. But I ran scan anyways and it kept popping up, then I came here for help. And the rest leads us up to today. Could it be when i re-enable Tea Timer and and allow the registry changes from the fix that it's getting back on that way? I really don't know. Besides screwing up on Tea Timer at first I've done everything you told me to by your directions exactly. Well here's to hoping this works this time!

I won't re-enable Tea Timer till I hear back from you in case it's letting it back in somehow. Thanks again and sorry this isn't working. I know it's frustrating me so it must be frustrating to you. Thanks,John

Good morning John.

The mystery is solved! :D It was TeaTimer. I use Spybot but I don't use TeaTimer. However, I switched it on about a year ago just to see what it did and decided not to use it. This morning, as a test, I switched it back on - an absolute nightmare!!! A dialog box came up asking me if I wanted to allow a registry change. I couldn't see the buttons properly, which didn't help. I allowed the change and then this was repeated many times for other changes I have made in the past year. In the end I shut down and rebooted. I was left with exactly the sort of items you had on your HijackThis log. It would appear that, when you allow the registry change to delete an item, it records the 'key' in the registry and then leaves it blank (I assume that it would fill in the values if you denied the change). This obviously leaves a lot of orphan entries, which are exactly what we have been working hard to get rid of! I have now managed to clean up my computer and have uninstalled Spybot.

I suggest that you do not switch on TeaTimer. It may protect you against registry changes but I feel that the downside is too serious. It was replacing the 'key' for the Zlob BHO and then telling you that you were infected! I'm not suggesting that you uninstall Spybot. It's a very good program, but I will not be recommending TeaTimer in future. Please let me know if you do want to uninstall it as there are a couple of things that you have to do to leave things tidy.

There is another program which you could look at, if you leave TeaTimer switched off (or uninstall Spybot). This is WinPatrol. It is a terrific program that notifies you of system changes and provides a number of very useful tools. For further information. see this link. There is a free version or you can upgrade to WinPatrolPlus.

Obviously, you can re-install Windows Defender now, if you wish.

Please let me know what you decide to do with Spybot.

Hey Beynac! That's great news! I've actually been kinda thinking it was Tea Timer for a few days now,but today made me really think so. What tipped me off was allowing all those registry changes to the things Hijackthis was fixing. And then it regenerating or whatever you wanna call it. So yeah i'm keeping Spybot, but not using Tea Timer. Thanks for The tip on WinPatrol I downloaded that and have that going now. In your opinion should I even bother with Windows Defender? I mean I have Ad-Aware SE Personal,Spybot S&D,AVG Anti-Spy,Win Patrol, And My McAffee Security Suite which has System guards ,Anti-spy etc etc etc all in one. I mean it's always good to have extra protection. I'd probably download it again, but it almost seems a waste of time with all the stuff i've already aquired. SO I wanted a 2nd opinion if you will. Well thanks again for everything, you're the best! Btw is there anything else I should do? Like any sort of follow up things? I don't know what for instance, but if there's anything else I should or could do please let me know. Thanks Again! And thanks to this forum for helping us less computer-wise people fix the things that would otherwise drive us to break our computers haha! John

Hi John. Windows Defender is good but you have probably got enough protection without it. Also, you could find that McAfee may clash with other real-time protection programs. It's been a bit frustrating trying to find out why we were having trouble getting rid of those HJT lines but the main thing is that we have sorted it out. It is also very useful for me to know that TeaTimer can cause that problem. If I see those sort of lines in a log in future, I will ask if they use TeaTimer! Thanks for your kind comments. I'm glad that we were able to help. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hey Beynac. Yeah that Tea Timer problem is a good thing to have figured out for sure. And I guess I don't have any further questions. But again thanks for all your time and take care. John
