I'm a newbie to this program but not pc's and other programs. I was just wanting someone to check everything out and see if there's anything that doesn't belong. PC seems to be working fine. I have all software and windows updates. Thanks and I appreciate it!

Note: I was looking over these before I posted and noticed a browser redirect to HP. I remember when it use to do that and then my home page got stuck on AOL. However I locked down those changes with spybot. I wonder if it's okay to go ahead and delete those anyway? I also noticed this:

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @xpsp3res.dll,-20001 - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)

I have no idea what missing means, if I should fix it or what. It just kind of stuck out.

Thanks again.
Robert

I actually found this on the missing file: "xpnetdiag.exe is main executable for the Network Diagnostic Tools, which helps you identify and fix connection problems on a home network that connects to the Internet by using a cable modem or DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) modem. This is a non-essential program and is not required to be started automatically." Since I don't use a cable modem or DSL I assume I need not worry about this.

My pc is fairly quick with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Processor 4200+ and loaded with 4 GB of Ram and nomrally it's rather fast even with multitasking. Examples are reading 2 or burning 1 dvd at the same time I check email, IM and surfing. Usually it's no issue at all. However things are "hanging up" as they say. When it first starts reading a disc and I try to do normal things, the system freezes for a minute or so. Normally that doesn't phase it.

I have run Spybot and ran System Mechanic 6 (Total Care) because it had been awhile and it fixed some things. However, the issue remains. So I was hoping someone could check out the log and see if anything negative was there. Task manager says 97-99% of the pc is "idle" so nothing is running that shouldn't be. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the Forums.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free...mitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Posted Image

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

Posted Image

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named:
c:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post:
C:\rapport.txt

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also have a question. Are you running the firewalls from both Norton and Zonelabs? If so then you never want to run 2 Firewalls at the same time due to system slow down and conflicts.

Regards,
Dave

Oh no, no, no....I know better than to run 2 firewalls. Norton's alone slowed me down enough. Only thing I run from them is Ghost...unless someone has a better suggestion. My anti virus did go off, so I am came and read the post to make sure. Using Zone Alarm and they now use Kapersky. Currently scanning brb.

Hi Robert,

So sorry for the big delay in getting back to you. Somehow I never got any email notifications that you replied back.

Running the Clean

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from Here and save that file to your
desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition
    files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "
    Update now
    " link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a
progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
    select "Delete".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

______________________________

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

Posted Image

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
______________________________

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.
______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware, and run a full scan.
  • IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
    time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
    actions
    "
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
screen and save it as a text file on your Desktop (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG Anti-Spyware and Reboot in Normal Mode.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing
Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Some things I need to bring up:

The step to "delete offline content" I could not find that box anywhere in the menus.
The step "reset web settings" didn't see that either it's just HTML Editor, Mail, Newsgroups and others with drop down boxes.
With the strp control panel>display>customize>web tab, there were no web pages listed in the box.

I downloaded the AVG Free as the other said "commerical" so I thought it was for commcerial use. If that's the wrong one, I can redo eveyrthing. It did fins a few things Spybot didn't (ran it yesterday) and neither did Zone Alarm.

System Mechanic is "suppose" to clean the registry and all of that. If you know of a better program to optimize, please advise. I've tried Systemworks before and had many problems.

The "renos" Spybot did find (and I thought got rid of) yesterday and according to my research it seems to have come from using Myspace. As for the other items, I have no idea. I know about the Keygens for System Mechanic and TMPGNC, but not the others.

The logs are below. Thanks again in advance.

I forgot to add, I don't know if everything is fixed yet, but the pc seems to run a lot smoother and quicker...very noticeable difference.

Hi Robert,

HJT log appears to be clean and good to hear things are running better. I would recommend a little more cleanup and an online virus scan to make sure.

Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files, cookies, cache, ect...

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Regards,
Dave

I noticed the online scanner is Kapersky. I'm using the new Zone Alarm that now uses Kapersky. Would there be any difference? Robert

Not sure if there would be too much difference but this just gives one more level of comfort that you're clean. It also produces a report that I can easily look at.

Tried the online scan, it won't work. It goes to this page with accept/decline, I accept, it wants to install a cabinet file, I tell it to, then it goes back to this wothout the buttons: Welcome to the Kaspersky Online Scanner! Use it to scan your PC for viruses and other malware for free Warning: if you have installed Kaspersky Online Scanner BETA, please manually uninstall it using "Add/Remove Programs" before installing this version! Otherwise this version will not function correctly. Benefits: Kaspersky Anti-Virus exceptional detection rates and thorough scanning Hourly AV database updates available each time the Online Scanner is launched Heuristic analysis to detect unknown viruses Simple installation (just click on a link) Requirements and limitations: When using this service for the first time, you have to run with Administrator privileges in order to install the product. Also, you will need to download and install files about 400 KB in size (about 1 minute on a 57.6 kbps connection) followed by 7 MB of virus definitions. However, if you use the Online Scanner again, you will only need to download the files that have been updated since your last scan. The Online Scanner service offered by Kaspersky Lab uses Microsoft ActiveX technology. Microsoft ActiveX Technology and the Kaspersky Online Scanner work only with MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. We cannot guarantee that the Online Scanner will function correctly if you are using any other browser or any Internet Explorer extensions (such as AvantBrowser). If you use a different browser, you can use the Kaspersky File Scanner to scan individual files. The free Kaspersky Online Scanner does not scan RAM, boot sectors and MBRs, so it cannot detect malicious code located in these areas. Please note: The free Kaspersky Online Scanner does not protect against malicious code, and cannot prevent future infections. It only detects malware that has already penetrated your computer. We strongly recommend that you install a full antivirus solution to protect your system. Privacy statement: The Kaspersky Online Scanner will collect information about the malicious programs found on your computer during the scanning process. The information will be sent to the Kaspersky Virus Lab for statistical purposes. No personal information about you or specific information about your system will be collected or transmitted to Kaspersky Lab.

OK we have others to try.

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
Please also post a fresh HJT log.

Regards,
Dave
