OK, lets backtrack a bit and do this.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Boot to safemode and delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\hidproc.sys

Combofix has been updated, lets run it again. If it gives you problems in Normal windows then boot to safemode and run it.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Clear your desktop of all the other reg fixes so you don't get confused and run this again.

Copy the contents of the below quote box to Notepad; Save As FixReg.reg to your Desktop; make sure File Type: is set to All Files (*.*). Make sure your including REGEDIT4

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\cryptimg]

Close Notepad.

Locate FixReg.reg on your Desktop. Double-click on it and answer 'Yes' when asked if you want to merge with the registry.

Open HJT and remove that 020 entry if its still present.
O20 - Winlogon Notify: cryptimg - cryptimg.dll (file missing)

Post the Combofix log and a new HJT log please

Kneecap   Thanks for hanging in with me on this tough one, but I am not sure if we are out of the woods 100% just yet. I need to check one thing and will be back shortly. Keep in mind after an infection as serious as yours , your system was compromised and there really is no way to tell if it still is. The only way to guarantee that is to reformat and install the operating system fresh. So at this point you may want to limit yourself to what you do financially on the internet. I will find out more about this. Be back soon.

Boot to Safemode, make sure you still have windows enabled to show all files and folders and delete these files.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSINFO\NewInfo.rxk
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\PLUGINS\SystemKb.sys

Delete all the other reg fixes on your desktop and we need to run this one.

Copy the contents of the below quote box to Notepad; Save As FixReg.reg to your Desktop; make sure File Type: is set to All Files (*.*).

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\AutorunsDisabled]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\C:]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\MyWebSearch Email Plugin]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shellexecutehooks]
"{A6011F8F-A7F8-49AA-9ADA-49127D43138F}"=-
"{754FB7D8-B8FE-4810-B363-A788CD060F1F}"=-

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A6011F8F-A7F8-49AA-9ADA-49127D43138F}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{754FB7D8-B8FE-4810-B363-A788CD060F1F}]

Close Notepad.

Locate FixReg.reg on your Desktop.
Double-click on it and answer 'Yes' when asked if you want to merge with the registry.

Reboot and post a new HJT log please.

Kneecap,

Lets run these through Killbox, have it set for ALL FILES

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find

Highlight all the files with the complete path inside the quote and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSINFO\NewInfo.rxk
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\PLUGINS\SystemKb.sys

  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure ALL Files is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion...Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes
If you get a message "pending operations has been stopped by external process!" then reboot the computer manually.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 11 <--This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

The rest of your log looks fine  But use your PC for a few days and see how everything goes, why don't you post a new HJT log in 2 or 3 days of computer use and lets make sure nothing comes back.

In the meantime, install these programs that will help keep you more secure.

Malware Complaints
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

Ken,
Thanks for all your time and effort in getting rid of all that carp**.
For the most part it has been quite interesting and i have learnt
some things along the way and i think maybe you have too.

Just a couple of questions-

Is there anything i should return to default such as hidden files etc?

As you know i already have zonealarm, firefox and adaware. Are they enough
or is there anything else from your list i should get?

Apart from the antiviral/spyware progs/tools,which of the other ones i've
downloaded do you recommend i should keep and run now and then?
i was thinking maybe atf cleaner and carp** cleaner.

Once again,thank you very much.

Pete Darbyshire,stockport,cheshire,uk

p.s one final hjt log post killbox but pre java install.
if you could just check that killbox did it's stuff. It's such a small
file box on the killbox panel,i'm wasn't sure it had done them both.

Your log looks fine

You can install all the programs that I listed, they are highly recommended by the people in the malware removal community. The only thing that can cause you problems is if you install more than one Anti Virus program. With AV...MORE IS NOT BETTER. You also only want to have one Firewall. If your using ZoneAlarm  then you need to turn the windows firewall off.

Go to Start> Control Panel and make sure your in Classic View > Windows Firewall and turn it off.

Yes you can go back and reverse the hidden files because it will prevent you or anyone else that uses your computer from accidentally deleting legit windows files.

Post a new log in about 5 days or so.

Kneecap,

Your log looks fine.

But today, AVG av found downloader agent obfuskated in docs +sets/pete/local settings/temp/bis 1B.exe.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Boot to Safemode and delete all the contents of the temp folder but not the temp folder itself.
Heres the path.
C:\ Documents and Settings\ pete\local settings\Temp.

Reboot normally

Run this cleaner again to make sure its all gone.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Scan again with AVG and see if its gone

One of the scans may have missed it, SpywareBlaster does not block virues, just bad programs from being installed on your system. Take care, Ken :D
