Restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.
This can take several miniutes to load.

Login as administrator.
If you never set a password for that account leave it blank and just hit enter.

Click Start, Run, type gpedit.msc and click OK.
Navigate to this branch:
User Configuration / Administrative Templates / System / Ctrl+Alt+Delete Options / Remove Task Manager

Double-click the Remove Task Manager option.
Set the policy to Not Configured.

I get a strange page with f-8, ask me to select between 3 different things, one of which was 'numbers and letters' I didn't recognize (one allowed you to continue booting in normal mode). I knew it wasn't the menu I was supposed to see, so I used msconfig to boot in SafeMode. I guess I got lucky because it worked ok. Can I do this now or do you want me to try F-8 again? (and maybe be able to tell you what is on that screen....)

Windows still can't find it when in Safe Mode...same error. I made a backup of the registry and stored it on D drive...don't remember how I made it, but it was when I first started trying to fix on my own. (I don't think I did this, though...)

You're typing the file exactly as I posted it?

Try it this way.

Start > Run> type in CMD hit enter.

At the command prompt, type gpupdate.exe /force and hit ENTER. Make sure you have the space in there.

Those are standard windows files. It sounds like you have some corrupt windows files but without the cd, I don't know what to tell you to do to fix them. Have you checked for windows updates?

You can get a free copy from Microsoft.

I have SP2 on cd, and I update often....Do you know if I can get a 'replacement' xp-cd from microsoft? Also, a neighbor offered to reformat for me. He says he has a 'key generator' and can make the copy of windows he puts on here look 'legal' so I can get further updates...It seems to me that Microsoft fights this kind of thing quite hard and I'm afraid I would be forever searching the web for hacks to keep updating.... It irks me considerably to end up useing an illegal copy when I have a legit (corrupted) copy right now...Will his key generator work to give me a 'legit' copy? Do I have any other options to keep my drive? Do you think I have something bad, or are my problems caused by the corruption? Should I continue to avoid my bank?
