Hello,

Have a problem here.

DVD-ROM Sony DDU1615-DS
TSSTcorp CD-RW TS-H292B

DVD-rom, CDrw not recognized in MyComputer
They show up in BIOS
DeviceMgr shows '!' (with yellow triangle)

Already Tried:
-Device Mgr>Update drivers
-Different jumper settings
-Device Mgr>Uninstall, shutdown, disconnect IDE cable, startup, shutdown, reconnect IDE, startup

Family can't find Recovery CDs, Dell site lists no drivers for download, only firmware flash utility for dvd-rom. Dell will ship Recovery CDs, but I was just wondering if there was an interim solution.

Any help is appreciated.
Just went through an extensive process of cleaning the system with tomcoyote help
(http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=76761&st=0)

The dvd-rom/cdrw problem is my only problem left.

Here's the HijackThis log:

CD-RW and DVD optical drives are recognized by XP as CD-ROM drives until the appropriate RW software or DVD software is installed. Since you indicate that the optical drives are being recognized in BIOS, but not in your My Computer file struction, and since the yellow "!" appears in device manager, Windows XP is apparently not being able to install the drivers to recognize them as even CD ROM. You may have some "missing or corrupted" Operating System files, subsequent to your infection and extensive work to remove the infection. Consider running chkdsk /f /r to be certain that any needed files are not located in bad-sectors. Then consider running System File Checker sfc /scannow to replace any missing or corrupted files. Then reboot. Let us know whether or not your drives are then correctly displaying in My Computer file structure. Note: The above is only intended to help with the process of getting those optical drives to be recognized in Windows as CD-ROM. In order for these optical drives to function correctly as either DVD or CD-RW, you will have to obtain and install the brand-specific software drivers for those functions. Best Regards
Hello, thank you for willing to help. I understand your statement about dvd drives being identified as cd until proper software installed. I stated as "dvd-rom" just in case it made a difference in the troubleshooting process. Tried running chkdsk /f /r from command prompt. Windows stated it would run on next reboot. Rebooted. Chkdsk started running: Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 5) . . . File verification completed. CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 5) . . . Index verification completed. CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 5) . . . Security descriptor verification completed. CHKDSK is verifying file data (stage 4 of 5) . . . Windows replaced bad clusters in file 38866 of name \DOCU~1\Laura\MYDOCU~1\My Music\THELIK~1.MP3. File data verification completed. CHKDSK is verifying free space (stage 5 of 5) . . . 27 percent completed. . . . at this point, I had to leave home to go to work. When I came back, the screen was at the user selection login screen. MyComputer still doesn't recognize disk drives, DeviceMgr still showing '!' with yellow triangle. Right-click>Update Driver = "The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed."
I know it's a long process, but I recommend that you repeat chkdsk /f /r until it makes a complete run without identifying and repairing any items in bad-clusters, particularly: CHKDSK is verifying file data (stage 4 of 5) . . . Windows replaced bad clusters in ……… Once you have completed the above, please run Windows File Protection - System File Checker Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow Keep us posted with your progress. Best Regards
I don't mind the long process, if it's gotta be done - well it's gotta be done. You peeps seem pretty knowledgeable, I'll go along. so far . . . Then I got this message: ”Windows File Protection - Files that are required for Windows to run properly must by copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional CD2 now." with options to either retry, more information, or cancel. Again, family can't find the Dell recovery CDs. Should I just use a regular XP Pro CD?
oops, that's right - drives not recognized. Sorry, I'm tired. I did however try an external USB dvd drive I have. I get the usb device icon (with green arrow) in the task tray but MyComputer doesn't recognize this drive either. Neither does DiskMgmt.
OK. Good Work. You "are" making progress. Additionally, we have some evidence that we are possibly on the right track for this repair. Or at the very least you are improving the operating system integrety which sets the stage for repair. First, using chkdsk f/ /r, you have been able to repair several OS files' physical placement and access on the hard drive. Second, the fact that SFC is calling for the original files from Dell CD, indicates that there are indeed some "missing or corrupt" operating system files that can be restored via SFC. __________________________ Yes, SFC can function and retrieve needed OS files from "any XP Pro" CD. Note: SFC looks to the XP Pro CD for a folder called i386 where all the files for C:\windows\system32 (and more) are located. "If" attempting SFC using the XP Pro CD fails, there is an additional step we can take to get to the i386 folder, so don't give up hope. In the meantime, you can hopefully run SFC successfully, with your XP Pro CD. Please keep us posted with your progress. Best Regards
ok, Putting the XPpro CD in the drive is no good cuz the cd-rom isn't being recognized. Tried coping the XPpro CD to an SD card and plugging in via a card reader. click Retry: "The CD you provided is the wrong CD. Please insert the Windows XP Professional CD2 into your CD-ROM." Tried renaming the SD card to: "Windows XP Professional CD2" and "WXPFPP_EN" and clicking 'Retry'. That didn't work. Also tried using the external dvd drive, but it also wasn't recognized.
can I connect the drive in another PC and run SFC on that particular drive? That would then allow me to have use of the CDROM in the other machine.
No. I don't think you can do that, since SFC looks for the Operating System, and therefore would be scanning the "other machine's" Windows, and not the windows directory from this faulty machine.

You can, however, facilitate the use of SFC on your current machine, by taking additional steps I mentioned but did not elaborate on earlier.

By default, SFC looks for replacement files in "dllcache" and then looks for the XP install CD if the needed files are not in dllcache. All of the necessary files actually reside in the i386 Folder with can be found prominently on the XP intall CD.

Using a separate machine, you can Save the entire contents of the Folder i386 onto your SD card and then Copy the contents into a new Folder on your C:\ Drive — C:\i386

SFC can then access all the necessary files to complete its run.

Note: You will have to make some Registry changes to alert your SFC to look at C:\i386 instead of the default locations that are currently frustrating you.

Here's an overview of how to do the above, and what specific Registry changes are necessary.
I've done this successfully on several XP machines.

Please keep us posted with your progess and questions.

Best Regards
sorry about just getting back to you, but SFC is a pretty long process and I've had many things to tend to in the past couple days. I copied the XPpro CD onto the SD card, transferred the i386 folder onto the problematic PC's hard drive, made the appropriate registry changes in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\ and then ran SFC /SCANNOW The progress bar went almost to the end, and then started asking for the "Windows XP Professional CD2" again. I also tried the following: - making change to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath\ - running SFC again - renaming original i386 folder to "backupi386" and using the i386 folder from the CD in its place - running SFC again - put things back how they originally were - coping all XPpro CD contents onto problematic PC's hard drive - running SFC again - same error msg asking for the "Windows XP Professional CD2" - change: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\ServicePackSourcePath to folder where XPpro CD i386 folder is located - run SFC again - still get error msg. The differences I've noted is that when I run SFC: - if registry keys are pointing to default i386 folder on HDD, I don't get error messages until near the end of the progress bar - if registry keys are directed to i386 folder from XPpro CD, I get error messages throughout the process. Anyway, I've rebooted several times, and the CD drives are still not recognized, still getting the yellow '!'
The Registry instructions for where SFC is to look, are precisely specific.

The instruction to "point" SFC to look in a location needs to be "one level before" the actual location.
So if you saved your i386 Folder at (for instance) C:\i386, you would change the SourcePath value to "C:\" and not to C:\i386.

I do not know what values you have actually set, since you have only referred to the Registry String, and then state "make the appropriate changes" or something to that effect.

It may help detect any problems in "location" if you type out the full String and String Value.

For instance:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
You will see various entries here on the right hand side. The one we want is called:
SourcePath
It probably "had" an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, and that is why it is asking for the XP CD.
All we need to do is change it to:
C:\

Notice that you do not change that value of "C:\" to something like "C:\i386", because Registry will then look "inside" i386 for an "i386 Folder", instead of looking at the entire i386 as the Folder.

You may also, and may already have, benefit from re-reading the entire Marc Lyron article.

Please repost the Registry Strings that you have worked on, and include the Entry and Value you have entered.

Best Regards
Hey Dough, I read the article a few times just to be sure I was following the instructions correctly. I did understand the bit about letting Windows search in the folder just prior to where the i386 folder is located at. Just to clear things up, here's what I did: -there's already an i386 folder on C:\, so I create a WINXPPRO folder -copied WinXPpro CD contents to folder "C:\WINXPPRO" (yes, including the i386 folder from the CD) -changed registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\ to value "C:\WINXPPRO" - reboot - ran SFC, still got errors -changed registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath\ to value "C:\WINXPPRO" - reboot - ran SFC, still got errors - thought maybe I should just make the path more direct, so I rename the original i386 folder to "backupi386" - copy i386 folder (from CD) and paste in C:\ - go back and change registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath\ changed value to C:\ - reboot - ran SFC, still got errors - read the post at the bottom of Marc Liron's article, and changed following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\ServicePackSourcePath to value: C:\ - reboot - ran SFC, still got errors hope that was more specific. My carpal tunnel was acting up before, and perhaps I was being too brief with my descriptions for the sake of less typing. Let me know if you need any other details.
