We should finish the fix before we worry about the rest.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = %3clocal%3e:80
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O16 - DPF: {511073AD-BE56-4D43-AE68-93390514385E} (TechToolsActivex.TechTools) - hcp://system/TechTools.CAB

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Ran HJT. Three of the four values you mentioned were present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = %3clocal%3e:80
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O16 - DPF: {511073AD-BE56-4D43-AE68-93390514385E} (TechToolsActivex.TechTools) - hcp://system/TechTools.CAB

Checked and fixed. Below is the log. For some reason I am suspicious. IE still doesn't work- but Firefox does. Start up was slow at first. There was a reported attempt to change my search page to one of the "go.micorosoft" pages listed in the log below example:http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157
).

Rebooted and ran HJT. Log below. Long start up. Went into Safe Mode. MSCONFIG also came up when I went into boot normal. IE still does not work.

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:

regedit /e startup.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg"
start notepad startup.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the batch must look after you created it: Posted Image
Doubleclick on look.bat and post the contents of it in your next reply

I don't see amytjing bad there.

Try windows updates.

If that didn't work:
From the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
Select the OK button.
Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

Another one to try:
If you download and double click on this small app, it will restore all the default search fuctions for IE.

http://www.spywarein...tools/IEFIX.reg

Save it to your desktop.

Right click on the file IEFIX.reg and select Merge.

If that doesn't work, see if you have this file:
C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\ie.inf

Right Click on ie.inf and select install.

Sorry about the delay. Basically nothing solved the problem. It was clearly something loaded in normal mode and used by IE but not other browsers or email as they all worked. So, did a reformat/reinstall and have been putting back apps and data.

Small journey on the reinstall. a thrid of my data wasn't backed up and I didn't want to lose it. Gateway pointed out their original advice wasn't really right- do a full repair. They forgot to mention the part about unistalling SP2 so the system disk from gateway would work! This left me in a loop with the pc always booting back into set up and being unable to complete set up. Even microsoft said, forget the data but i was a bit more persistant and someone suggested trying a parrellel install. Worked, got the data and then proceeded.

Everything is back but...

My iTunes works going out to the store but can't connect to the internet for authorization/purchases. Apple wasn't of much help. They directed me to a microsoft knowledge article. Did everything suggested, flushing DNS, de-registereing and re-registering dlls, running safefix, etc. But no go. Changed AV/IS back to Norton from Kaspersky for now and neither that nor turning off the firewall worked. (Although, i really don't like turning off the firewall.

Although...it works in safe mode! Since something might show up, i ran another HJT scan but am not holding out much hope.

Found the problem although not sure I understand it. Apple got back to me and suggested the time was wrong on the pc clock. Checked and right date and time, but I did a synch with the microsoft site (the option when you double click on the time in the lower right) and wow..it all works now. Can only image it was less than 1 minute off. In any event all solved! Thanks for the help.

Well that's a new one on me

You can remove any programs I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there:

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
