Will do. By the way- since it installed the Verizon Communications Center, It told me when I rebooted that I was connected to the Internet but Verizon server not available. I then did an update and it connected and told me that there were no new updates. But browser still doesn't work in normal mode. Will disconnect power and then reboot. Am still curious why browser works in safe mode but not normal.

If the power thing doesn't work, Lets try a different browser. Click the link and download FireFox and give it a try.

I did that and same basic result but 1) My Verizon Communication Center (which I didn't load until today) tries to go out to the internet. It comes back with a message that i am connected to the internet but verizon server is not available. (I can get to it on this PC) 2) Still works in Safe Mode

That sounds like a Verizon issue to me. Call them and have them get into your modem and look at the settings

Tried some other things. The Verizon Support Center allows you to test your internet connection and the test passed although I still cannot use IE7.

I am thinking it is either the browser itself or somehow related to the Verizon connection. (I did call them last night with not much success.)

I ran an HJT log just in case you would want it- below:

Lets find out  I suggest you do this: Uninstall Internet Explorer 7 to return to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel." Click "Add or Remove Programs." Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box. Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 7 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove."

I am going to try the new browser thing. I can't seem to uninstall IE7 successfully. Verizon had me "reset" to the original settings and I could see that there were acces to the ristry (i assume in reseting" that had like 50 different files in the registry that ranged from the really not prety to the oblique. In the meantime, I successfully pinged www.yahoo.com in the command prompt- so i can get out to the internet, just not through the browser! Will try the new browser and see what happens.

Firefox works- no problems. I uninstalled IE7 and installed IE6 but that still has the problem of not being able to access the internet. I also notice that I get a Google warning that something is trying to reset my browser search engine and do I want to reset it to ...go.microsoft... but then thee is a forwardlink to a specific item #. When I had set IE7 back to original settings, I did see what was really like 50 files in Kaspersky where registry access was being done. (I asumed it was accessing a removing these.) Is there a way for me to go into regedit and see these? The guy from Verizon said there was but he wasn't allowed to tell me- since it is the registry

You mess up the registry and you can then re-install everything.

Microsoft MSN is IE's default homepage.

Please go HERE and do a online scan.
Let me know what is found.

After scan, reboot and post a new HijackThis log

Also let me know how the computer is running now.

f-secure says it needs to use IE. I now have IE6 but it can't go out to the Internet! The other programs I have been downloading on my work laptop and copying to the troubled PC.

Does IE work in Safe Mode? Run the scan in Safe Mode if you can.

Tried safe mode. Yes it does work in safe mode but i can't scroll low enough on the license page to accept the license. I even thought about just buying it but i am not sure if it will conflict with kaspersky. Kaspersky and nav/nis conlicted so i had to uninstall NAV/NIS. Is there another scanner i can try?

Thanks, I actually realised that after I asked- sorry, been trying to fix this since 10 last night and am getting a bit dotty (if thats a word). Will take a while to run (something like 280K files). Will revert when its finished.
