PC was very sluggish when starting up IE7 this time. Took awhile for home page to load and then this page, but seems okay now. Also that svchost.exe didn't seem to crush the CPU on startup this time. Anything else I can do to get leaner and meaner? Thanks.

Run HJT and fix this one.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8E3595C5-6F6D-44B2-BC8B-FA2DAF1EE33C} - (no file)

lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
Some items may come back because of the programs you have running.

Okay, I've done the things prescribed. At first I deleted everything that RegSeeker identified, including the green ones. But when I did that some of my programs were broken. Couldn't use Microsoft Office (it kept wanting to install it), and another program or two. So I tried to restore using the backup in RegSeeker but that didn't work - I got an error saying it couldn't access the registry. Okay, so I then backed up with the ERDNT way and it restored things. Then I did RegSeeker again, but this time only selected the red items, plus a couple of items I knew for sure were obsolete. Now things are pretty good.

Regarding MS Office, I can use that fine on my main XP ID, but I have users set up for others in the family and when I try to open any Office program from theirs it looks to install the program. If I cancel out of that eventually the program (e.g., Word) will come up as normal, but it happens each time which is an annoyance. Some programs ask when installing whether you want it to be for all users or not, but I don't recall Office doing that.

Anyway, overall I believe the virus/spyware is all gone, but I will continue to monitor closely for awhile to be sure. I'll also not make the mistake of trusting the site where I grabbed that infected file from. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for all the help. You're doing good work.

I want to make a small donation via PayPal, but when I click on the button on the Donate page I get this:

What's the e-mail address to donate?

Did you login to PayPal?

I need to take out the @ sign and use AT because of the bots that search web sites for address's. Be sure to replace the AT with @ in the address.

MS Office is very picky. When you first try using it, put in the Office cd. It will repair the install. You'll need to do this for every user. After you do that once, you won't need to do it again. Be sure to open all the Office programs you use.
