Hi. I need some expert help. I'm running Windows XP Pro. I use ZoneAlarm firewall and avast! AV with on-access protection. Also periodically run AdAware SE and Spybot S&D. Here's what's happened. The other day I unwittingly introduced viruses and malware when I opened a file that had a trojan in it. Immediately avast! started issuing several alerts and warnings and ZoneAlarm warned me that various files were attempting to access the internet. I denied any access and followed the software's recommendations. I then did a full virus scan with avast! and ran AdAware and Spybot, rebooting in between. All these scans found malicious items with names like Virtumod, fakelaert.249, mezzia, MulDrop.5059, bad files like ptkwackw.dll, iiffffe.dll, gebaw.dll, and others. I've "fixed" the problems with these programs, but they keep reappearing. I started getting popups when opening IE7. I noticed a process v6.exe, so I did some searching and followed some recommendations on another site. I downloaded and ran killbox.exe to eliminate v6.exe. Then I ran NGenFix and DrWeb-CureIt, following instructions closely, including running scans in safe mode, etc. Still, upon rebooting I would start getting popups again and sometimes avast! and ZoneAlarm would start kicking in with virus and attempted internet access warnings again. I keep getting a couple of taskbar icons, one warning me with a popup balloon about suspicious software on my PC, but I think this is part of the spyware. Next I found this site and tried some of the instructions in the self help area. I had seen something about Smitfraud from one of my Spybot scans so I got SmitfraudFix and ran it. I then got AVG AntiSpyware trial and ran it in Safe Mode. I've downloaded, but haven't yet run ATF Cleaner. Finally, I've run HiJackThis. At this point I think I need to post the results of some of these scans and see what help I can get. The following posts will have the latest SmitfraudFix, AVG AntiSpyware and HiJackThis logs. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Much appreciated.

Running the Clean

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

Posted Image

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
______________________________

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

Thanks for the reply. I followed the instructions. Note, a few things were a little different than your description when I cleaned out temporary internet files. I think maybe this is because I'm using IE7 (?). For example, no "Reset Web Settings" button on the Program tab. Instead I found "Reset Internet Explorer Settings" on the Advanced tab and did that. In any case, I'm pretty sure I cleared everything out.

One of the problems I've continued to have is that I always have a popup IE window that goes to "broadcaster.com" shortly after I start IE. But I haven't checked that again since running your instructions, since I stayed in Safe Mode. (I'm posting this from a separate PC.)

Here are the requested logfiles:

Okay, rebooted normally. Definitely still infected because I'm getting popups to broadcaster.com and amaena.com wanting to sell me WinAntiVirus Pro 2007 and wanting to install WinAntiVirusPro2007FreeInstall.cab (which I won't let it). I'm also having the problem I've seen others post about where one of the svchost.exe processes hogs all the CPU for a long time after startup. But I think I had noticed that happening lately before I was infected. Any advice on that would be appreciated too.

New log:
