Spysheriff has been "found and fixed" numerous times. I've run avg 7.5 and kerio spyscan numerous times.I've also run smitRem, SmitfraudFix, and RogueRemover. Today while running Rootkitrevealer avg poped up with four files for FlooderBBG. Spysherrif was found 0n 2-19 by avg. Lots of others have come and gone and come again over the last couple of weeks. I don't know much about this stuff and find most that I talk to know less....clearly up till now i've been talking to the wrong people. I've tried so many things i no longer know what i've tried. After finding this web site I downloaded ad-aware and ran it with 55 objects removed and 32 quaranteened, and rebooted and downloaded spybot with nothing found and rebooted and then ran highjack this. Anyway any help is appreciated. I'm tired and am having fun and am glad i didn't give them(the spysheriff badies) any money. :)
Thanks for your consideration,
Bill

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste these filepaths: 1 at a time.
Copy each finding for me into a txt document and post them with your next reply.

Where WILLIA~1 is the users logon name ( Maybe william ?) You will need to change that part for me.
You can use the browse button on Jottis to help find each file one at a time.

C:\Documents and Settings\WILLIA~1\Local Settings\WILLIA~1\LOCALS settings\Temp\AOOV.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\WILLIA~1\Local Settings\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\DGISH.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\WILLIA~1\Local Settings\LOCALS~1\Temp\PPQAQYNSDBJLK.exe

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustota...l/index_en.html

Thanks for your help. I printed off your directions, checked each step off.....and while stepping through the HJT section I think I made a mistake by restarting my computer, when prompted, after clicking on Fix Checked. I think this because the three files you had me have scanned at virusscan and virustotal both responded with "zero bits transmitted." I also had difficulty in reaching the on line scan at Kaspersy because the active x permission would not be accpted. I tried several times. Each time i would be taken back to the Welcome screen. I checked my browser security settings and all sites were blocked. I over road the block and was able to run the scan. I then ran another JHT. Thanks again. I'm sorry if I screwed up the scan by restarting my computer. The report from Kasperskys and new HJT log follow:

Please delete the smitfraud fix from your computer.
It is updated very often no reason to leave it there.

____________________________
Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
Select:
Delete on Reboot
then Click on the All Files button.
Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\Documents and Settings\William Pilicer\Local settings\temp\AOOV.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\William Pilicer\Local settings\temp\DGISH.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\William Pilicer\Local settings\temp\PPQAQYNSDBJLK.exe

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from AVG anti malware
  • The report from Jotti

You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

I deleted the smitfraud fix.
I had trouble getting killbox to accept the three paths. It didn't appear that the paths were accepted by killbox. I did] receive the message, " PendingFileRenameOperationsprompt registry data has been removed by external process" or something close to that. The top, blue part of the killbox program said 0 files, 0....when it ran.
In deleteing the three services I didn't restart the computer when it prompted me to since your instructions said to close and didn't mention the restarting the software requested. I just closed the application after doing all three. The prompt to restart came after each of the three deletes.
When i rebooted to safe mode to run avg I mistakenly restarted in normal mode with no 30 second shutdown. When I realized what I did I shut down, waited thirty seconds, and then rebooted in safe modeIn
In running avg in safe mode i could not see enough of the window(black frame arond the window obscured view) to assure all of the choices were as you instructed. I also couldn't see a tray icon so just closed with task manager.
And so it goes.
Thanks again,
Bill

Lets try AVG 7 again.
This time when you set to safe mode and open it. AVG does a better job in safe mode.
Hit alt and space bar and see if you can move the screen around enough to get it to scan and save a log.
If not please run it in normal mode.

I would also like you to scan with AVG anti virus and see if it still finds anything to warn you about.
That log should be save in .
with AVG open ->> Click Service Tab->> Event History Log.
  • Please post those 2 logs.
  • Let me know how thngs seem to be running now.

One other thing I need you to do.

Navigate to :

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\avgwlntf.dll

right click on that Dll file and choose properties.
Then choose version. Tell me what you see in company and copyrite areas.

AVGspy, what you had me download, would not let me quaranteen the tacoda cookie. It says quaranteen under the scan tab but the action screen, the other screen, there are two, said delete. right clicking on the "delete" broutght down the choice menu but the quaranteen option was lighter than the others and would not allow that as a choice. I ran the scan twice as I thought the first time I screwed it up. The second scan is where tried any number of different attempts to choose quaranteen, all failed. The consumer version of of avg found the same cookie. Also once a few days ago but after your last email I ended up with the msn page as my home page again as opposed to the drudge Report which is what I have as a home page. This hasn't happened today. The file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\avgwlntf.dll has "GRISOFT, SRO" for company and "Copyright © 2007 GRISOFT, s.r.o." in the copyrite area. AVG scan; --------------------------------------------------------- AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report --------------------------------------------------------- + Created at: 1:13:48 PM 2/23/2007 + Scan result: C:\Documents and Settings\William Pilicer\Cookies\william_pilicer@tacoda[1].txt -> TrackingCookie.Tacoda : Cleaned. ::Report end --------------------------------------------------------- AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report --------------------------------------------------------- + Created at: 10:12:23 PM 2/22/2007 + Scan result: Nothing found. ::Report end The regular avg scan found the tacoda cookie and when I clicked on more details or information or something I was sent to the following: "Virová encyklopedie." I can't figure out how to send you a copy of the regular avg report. And this is just really feeling frustrating. I just had to walk away for a bit. But I'm back and look forward to your next email. I tried to copy the virus vault log and coldn't figure a way to do that either. But the tacoda cookie has been in there at least twice, with the number 1 once and the number 2 once. Respectfully, Bill

Ok the one cookie is just a tracking cookie. No biggie as long as it's removed once in a while.

A post or 2 back you said

I checked my browser security settings and all sites were blocked.

These were good sites blocked ?
If so were going to run this, some malware adds things to blocked and trusted sites maliciously.

_____________________________
Download: DelDomains.inf
- Right-click and select: Save Target As (IE only)
To use: right-click and select: Install
Thats it...
this will remove all the restricted sites as well as trusted sites from Internet explorer.

I see no signs of it but lets do a check for smitfraud. I know I had you remove it but I wanted to be sure we are using the latest version.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free...mitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with any others I have asked for in your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Please also let me know of any other issues you seem to be having.

Thanks for the patience and reply. The computer seems to be fine. The browser goes to my home page when asked. The flooder trojan is gone. Do you know why the virus encyclopedia was in aforeign language? What makes this tracking cookie keep coming back? Can you tell what I had? Do you think I should cancel any credit cards i ever used on the internet? My paypal account? My checking account if I've ever used it to make a payment? I have. I definitely want to learn more about this. I ran the deldomains pgm. Do you know why the virus encyclopedia was in aforeign language?

Looks to me as if AVG thinks your using a different language. Because that is part of AVG's site.
As I don't use AVG myself I can't instruct you on how to fix this.
You can go the AVG's forum and ask about it.

What makes this tracking cookie keep coming back?

Surfing habits. Cookies are assigned for each site you visit. Running CCleaner weekly will help keep these cleaned up along with a few other programs I am going to recommend you at least try after I see 1 more HJT log.

Can you tell what I had?

Not exactly. Looked as if you had a few files that were bad we removed. Can't find any info on them. Sometime virus /worms and such come up with random names such as
AOOV.exe which we have removed and stopped and deleted the services it created.

Do you think I should cancel any credit cards i ever used on the internet?
My paypal account?

My checking account if I've ever used it to make a payment? I have.

I don't see that it is necessary here. We usually recommend this if we find back door/remote Trojans. But it never hurts to change passwords for sites like these on occasion.

Please post 1 more HJT log for me so I can have a last look to be sure.

Thanks for answering my questions. I'll visit the avg forums and see if they will be a bit entertained by my amusing use of their services. I still wonder about that tacoda cookie. I use ccleaner daily. I also could not quaranten it in avgspy running in safe mode. I suppose I wonder about the wrong things and too much. I shall learn more though. Your patience, kindness, dipomacy, and technical skill are appreciated very much.
Thanks again,
Bill

After the new window appears select the View tab.
Deselect in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
Deselect the checkbox labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Select the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
Replace the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
Press the Apply button and then the OK .

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.

OK I started working down the list, Downloaded and installed SpywareBlaster and discovered under tools, browser pages i have eleven entries in addition to the first one for my home page, "Drudge Report". They seem to be all sorts of code to redirect activity. I'd copy them but I can't figureout how. I typed/copied them all and they disappeared when I tried to copy them here...my fault I'm sure...not the fault of any malware, etc. But if there is any way to copy this stuff by just clicking I'd sure like to be tutured on it. Next I checked my internet options, general, search settings. The first entry in the box was Google(Default). When I moved the curser over it though it showed an exceedingly long address that I will type again as i don't know how to copy it either and it may well provide you with some sort of entertainment.
http://www.google.co...amp;startPage=1
The second entry was "Live Search" Moving the curser over it revealed the following http://search.live.c...ults.aspx?q=
So next I found my way over to internet options, programs, add-ons and there are lots of things in there that i wish i could copy but can't figure out how. These include some without publisher or file and two with "(Not verified)Microsoft Corporation" for a publisher.

Next i went back to SywareBlaster, Protection, and found about 200 of the sites were not checked after I checked enabled. I rightclicked on one not checked, selected all and it took.
I think I'll stop before I do anything else on your list and wait to see if any of this provides a different plan or at least some entertainment. If we get a big reward for discovering that google hits are being siphoned off i propose we split it three ways between you Tom and me. :)
Thanks again
Bill :weee:

No way of copying that stuff that I know of.
What you found in there ( the long list of sites) is fine dont worry about it.

Continue on with internet explorer options.. Add and run both adaware and spybot search and destroy. If you don't already have them. remove anything they find. And you should be good. Let me know.
