Gentle People,

Just had a heck of a time updating to IE7. Ended up un-installing Yahoo Messenger, AIM, Google toolbar and Google Desktop. Finally got IE7 to run without crashing. Went ahead and un-installed Viewpoint and Wild Tangent and Logitech Desktop Messenger. Got my running processes down to 35 from 60. Ran Spybot S&D and AdAware, cleaned out a lot of junk. Am running AVG 7.5. Everything runs much better now but I am puzzled by the number of O18 protocols in my HJT log.
Can some kind soul give it a glance and enlighten me?

Thank you so much!

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

All those 018 entries are because when you installed the software for Logitech you did not read the (EULA) End Users License Aggreement and you installed Desktop Messenger which is not really needed. So its your call but you can uninstall it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger <-- Just this program, the rest of Logitech is needed for your hardware to work.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

If you or an Administrator set these than leave them alone otherwise fix them also.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 11 <--This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

It looks like you have two Anti Virus programs running, Microsoft advises to have only one AV program as more than one will clog up your system using valuable system resources and can cause a multitude of problems. Your call but you need to uninstall the one from Cox or AVG Free.

The rest of your log looks fine  Any issues that you may think are Malware or Virus related??

Ken545,
Thank you so much for your reply! I can appreciate how busy you guys must be when I browse thru all the work you are doing. What an incredible service!
OK, I thought I had already un-installed Logitech Desktop Messenger but it is definately gone now, I fixed the items you suggested and updated Java and verified it. Cox was my old ISP and I can't find any way to un-install it and I don't see where it is running. I found some Cox folders and files, should I delete them? I don't think I have any other problems, machine is running well now. Here is a new HJT log:

What an incredible service! THANK YOU :D

These two have to go,

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

This is a service that is still running from COX Anti Virus.
Dont fix it with HJT
O23 - Service: DvpApi (dvpapi) - Command Software Systems, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Command Software\dvpapi.exe

Look in your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and as long as you are no longer using Cox, then make sure you uninstall there software.

After your sure its all uninstalled, do this
  • Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
  • Scroll down to DvpApi
  • Double Click that service to open it.
  • Click on Stop Service.
  • Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
  • OK your way out of the program.
  • Open HJT > Misc Tools > Delete an NT Service
  • Type in dvpap
  • Then click on OK, it will ask you to reboot, do so.
After your sure everything is uninstalled and you remove this service than you can delete the folders related to Cox.

AVG Free is a great program by the way

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D

Ken545,
So I ran HijackThis and did a scan, checked the boxes next to the two entries you said had to go, clicked on fix this, closed the program and rebooted. Ran another HT scan and the two entries are still there. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to be in Safe mode?
I should also tell you I have run The Ultimate Troubleshooter which I have found very useful in the past. It says the DvpApi.exe is in C:/program files/commonfiles/command software which also contains a bunch of files from F-Prot. Is it possible that Cox was using F-Prot for their AV program? I can find nothing in Add or Remove programs refering to Cox, Command Software or F-prot. Can I safely delete the Command Software folder after I delete dvpapi using your method?
Sorry for the delay in responding, life is interfering today.

Sometimes those two entries are hard to remove. It may be your AV or AVG Antispyware blocking it. Try turning off the background guard in AVG Antispyware and then right click on the AVG AV icon in the system tray and disable it, if it still won't go, try booting to safemode to remove them.

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

Let me see the uninstall list before you proceed removing that service.

Open Hijackthis
  • Go to Misc Tools> Open Uninstall Manager.
  • Click on Save List.
  • The list will open in Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste the List into this thread

Ken, Did a little research on Command Software, appears to be deployment software for ISP's so Cox probably used for Frisk Software AV program. The folder seems to be comprised of AV related files. Here is a screenshot: OK, I don't know how to post a screenshot, Sorry! Anyhow, I think if I get rid of the registry entry calling for dvpapi.exe I can go ahead and delete the Command Software folder and anything else that references Cox. Will await your advice! P.S. Cool Website!

I don't see anything related to Cox in your uninstall list. So got ahead and disable and delete the service like I posted.

I must be dense, I still cannot remove the two entries in HijackThis.

Its not you, sometimes they just won't go. They are more clutter than anything else so don't lose any sleep over it if you can't remove them.

You have Spybot Search and Destroy installed  Make sure the TeaTimer is not enabled, although it would show up in your log if it was but go ahead and doulbecheck, this could be the cause of those two entries from not being deleted.
  • Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer

Ken
I got rid of dvapapi as you suggested and tried once more to remove the two entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
I checked Spybot and Tea Timer was indeed unchecked so I booted to Safemode and ran HJT and checked those two entries and clicked "fix checked" and rebooted and there they were again. If you are not too concened about them then I'm not either!
I will implement as many of your suggestions for staying malware free as I can and go back to your website and study the information there. What a great resource!
Thanks again for all your help!

Here is my last HJT log:

Thats good, you still have some entries in your log from Cox, fix them with HJT.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

These are left over from Cox
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3C7195F6-D788-4D50-BA72-2EE212EDAC78} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2C0A5F28-48D8-408B-9172-9C6121025BCE} - (no file)

Go to C:\Program Files and delete any folders from Cox

Ken,
OK, got rid of all the Cox related files and the leftovers in the HJT log.
These two are still there:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

Is there some way I can manually delete them from the registry?

No, don't do that because they are needed, they will usually point to a legit site , so lets not worry about them. The rest of your log is fine   Take care, Ken :D
