Hi cf52266

Use this link to get HijackThis.
Save it to your desktop and then double-click to run it.
It will install the program in c:\program files\HijackThis.
Browse to that location with windows explorer, and double click on the HijackThis.exe program to run. Choose the 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'
That will allow you to save the log to the desktop (or some other place) and leave open a notepad file with the HijackThis log in it.

Now post your HijackThis log into this topic.

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

Spyware seems to be gone as I am not getting pop up messages every 2 minutes asking me to buy software to remove spyware. My computer is moving agonizingly slow and I am receiving a message that my D: HP_Recovery drive is almost out of space (4.83 GB used space, 32 MB free space). My C: drive has only 14.9 GB used space and 37.3 free space. Any help with this would also be appreciated. Hi

I think that Partition Magic would help, it's a commercial software though

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.

No more pop ups about downloading security software. Should I fix or quarantine the infected files noted in the Kaspersky scan?

Computer still crawling. It takes me at least 5 minutes to get to where I can read your post and at least 2 minutes for my reply to be posted. I'm currently on my work computer and all this can be done in a matter of seconds.

The strange part about the D: drive is that it tells me I'm using 4.83 GB of space but 22 of the files listed are 1 KB and the 23rd file is 233 KB. I ran a defrag on both C: and D: but it did not help D: at all. An IT friend told me that Partition Magic would just split my drives into smaller pieces, not allocate more to the D: drive.

My husband seems to believe there is a way to take some of the free memory from the C: drive and allocate it to the D: drive but he doesn't know how to do it.

Thanks for all your help!

Hi

I think that you should then disable startup programs via msconfig.

At least these can be disabled:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] c:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background
O4 - Startup: NaturalColorLoad.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
O4 - Global Startup: hp center UI.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Shadow\ShadowBar.exe
O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Kodak EasyShare software.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\Kodak EasyShare software\bin\EasyShare.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Kodak software updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\Program\Kodak Software Updater.exe

Also, read this thread

If C: and D: drive are in same HD, then Partition Magic should be able to resize partitions (eg. make C: drive smaller and D: drive bigger)

Did those tips help?
