Hello...I was looking for a little help. My computer has really slowed down in the last several weeks. I tried a disk cleanup and a defrag (this took over 6 hours for the computer to complete). Recently I have noticed that the hard drive seems to always to running, even when I am not actively loading applications. I know that Windows does have some idle time activities to run...but the constant running of the hard drive is relatively recent. The recent changes I have made to the system include installing the new McAfee update, and utilizing the synchronization manager to use server files offline (I have the settings changed so that synchronization is done manually only). I ran a recent virus scan..only turned up a bunch of cookies that were deleted. I have run the hijackthis program...have posted the log below. Anyone have any suggestions as to what else I can do to clean things up?

Thanks!!

Thanks for the quick reply...I ran the FileMon program. It looks like an application called mcmscsvc.exe is constantly accessing files. This is the same application that shows up in the Task manager as an active process and with constant CPU usage. The filemon log has this application listed a couple hundred times each second...I have no idea what it is doing. I have cut an pasted a single typical line entry from the program. Looks like some process of the McAfee program?!? 10:23:30 AM mcmscsvc.exe:4016 WRITE C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\APPLIC~1\McAfee\MSC\logs\{8C6EC732-E841-4521-9F5F-35F2800A519F}.log-g25cft60j48ufantvfcw SUCCESS Offset: 32613376 Length: 1024

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following,
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Run this online scan and post the results here.

Hi, I have the exact same problem as well. it has only started within the last week, and when i end 'mcmscsvc.exe ' the problem goes away. It has only occurred since i installed the latest version of McAfee Security Centre, so to me it seems that this is the cause of the problem. But what can we do to stop it?!

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware (ewido). Then scan and post the report here.
Instructions and download link can be found here.

If it is indeed the trouble.
Click Start > Run type services.msc > OK
In the list of services find:
McAfee Services (mcmscsvc)
Rightclick that line and choose Properties.
On the General tab Stop and set the service to disabled.

And if you need help please start your own thread.

I haven't had a chance to try running any of the spyware software you recommended....however, after spending several days on the phone and internet with several different techs at McAfee, it seems that the problem lies with the incomlete removal of the original version of McAfee when the new update was installed. Partial removal occurred automatically with the update. We manually removed the uninstall McAfee that remainined in the program list under the control panel, but this supplied only a temporary fix. The problem would reoccur when accessing functions in certain programs (such as typing in a Word file). The technician indicated that the mcmcsvc.exe process that we keep seeing that used from 5 to 99% of the CPU at any given time is an application specific to the older version. As a temporary fix you can open task manager and manually stop the process when the computer bogs down. I don['t have time this week, but I think the long term solution is to completely uninstall all versions of McAfee and reinstall the new version only. Anyway, just by ending the application I have eliminated the CPU paralysis that was giving me fits. Thanks to everyone for all of your suggestions!
