Computer moving very slowly

Hi guys, I'm running windows XP (home edition) on a P4 2.8 Ghz with 1.5 gigs of RAM. Recently, my computer's been moving really slowly, and freezing for a couple minutes every time i open anything up, which means that it takes forever to do anything. Can anyone here help me out? Thanks

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

Your Hijackthis is an outdated version and not showing me the whole picture.

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Go to where you currently have HJT installed and delete the whole folder.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis


  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.
  • Please use [external image: Posted Image]and not [external image: Posted Image]
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

BitComet is a file sharing program and not recommended but its your call to remove it.


FlashGet download manager - the trial bundles Cydoor adware, but when you register the ads disappear


Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Remove these if you uninstalled Flashget

Keep in mind that I know playing games can be fun but you need to watch what you download, a lot of games sometimes bring bad things with them.



Run this system cleaner.
Download and Install CCleaner
If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
* Click on Run Cleaner

Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories > System Tools> Disk Defragmenter.
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to help speed up your system. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

What I do on my own system is every few months, I uninstall any program that I installed that I no longer use and never plan on using in the future, you would be surprised how cleaning out all the old programs makes a difference.

Your System Restore also gets built up and can clog you down, do this every six months or so, not on a regular basis, make sure you create a new Restore Point.


Turn off System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Create a new Restore Point <– Very Important
  • Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
    You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this

lol, actually I'm in Canada, but the programs are from Hong Kong :P Anyways, I don't think i'll uninstall flashget or bitcomet till a little later, when I'm sure I'm not going to use them. Oh, and can you post an alternative link for the CCleaner tutorial? The link you sent me doesn't exist. -Dark

nope, seems good now! I'm just wondering what caused the problem in the first place….. Oh, and is it advisable that i set my computer to only use RAM? (no paging file) I have 1.5 gigs and i've never had to run anything that used more than 1 gig (at least in task manager) -Dark

Its not advisable to eliminate the paging file, you can make it smaller if you wish but do not remove it entirely. One option is to move it to another partition if you have one. I think I would just leave it alone.

    IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
