My problem is when I scan my comp (Win XP) the message comes up C:windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

I have cleaned with AVG and use spybot, I destroyed what I thought was everything but it keeps coming back everytime I scan. I am sorry if this makes no sense, I am so very new to all of this so I really do not have a clue what I am doing. I think I got the initial virus from a MSN chat.

The virsus that is comiong up is Trojan Horse Downloader. Generic3. NPE

Here is a copy of my scan….

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
Thank you for the reply this forum is so helpful.
Here goes, I have no idea what this means but the only thing that shows up is on the virus checker (C:windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts)
and nothing on spybot.
Let me know what this means or if I need to do anything else. Is SDFix something I should be running now and then or only if I have problems?

THANX…

Is SDFix something I should be running now and then or only if I have problems?

SDfix is a tool made to target a number of backdoor trojans, it is intended for use to clean those infection, it should only be used under the guidance of a qualified helper

You are running a P2P filesharing programme.
  • Many of these programmes come with unwanted components bundled with them.
  • If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does click here.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P programme, it is only the programme that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

My recommendation is you uninstall it.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 .
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Go here to run an online scannner from Kaspersky.
  • Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  • A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  • Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  • Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  • Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  • Once finished, save the log as "KAV.txt" to the desktop.

Post back with the Kaspersky log and a new HijackThis log
Wow, I am having some major problems… I can't stay connected long enough to download the software. I am at another comp so atleast I can save the java to a disk to install. My prob is that I live remote where only dial up is available. Its like the computer keeps being hijacked and I loose the connection (but not really) I need to restart it to get it to disconnect. The prob that keeps showing up is wer0905.dir00 svchost.exe appcompat.txt even after deleting. I will try again in a bit when I get home. I uninstalled my Lexmark because it was giving me problems with rtdrvmon.exe. I will try post the logs later tonight. kenora44
Looks like there is something…Hope you can help, my comp is getting very annoying.
Thanks

Go to Start> Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs.

Remove the following programs, if they are present.
OIN
Post a new HijackThis log and a description of any remaining problems
OIN is now removed, AVG still shows Windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts. This haden't shown up before I started having these problems. I am still getting "kicked off" my connection.

Heres the log…
