HELP!!!
Started receiving email from addresses I do not know. Checked AVG to find the above virus and trojan in the vault. I cannot 'heal' or remove them and the status is INFECTED. I only noticed something amiss when trying to log onto my emails through my provider Orange and was refused login due to possible virus infection. I've followed your self help instructions and here is the HJLOG…………. I'm rather worried as the trojan may be able to follow keystrokes. I do all my banking online, flight payments etc.
Thanks in advance XXX

PS: I am a basic computer user NOT an expert, so I need idiots guide to what to do next.

Hi bob4. I got your reply just in time! However I've become stuck at the Kaspersky download.I get as far as the install ActiveX component and then a window appears welcoming me to the scanner but there's no further button to proceed. It cannot go any further so I cannot do the scan. I've included a current HJT Log. If it's any help AVG has identified the virus as being in a hidden program folder C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21……. Object name: Dc2.zip Then there's a :Trojan horse proxy.FQB. Regards.

Hi bob4. I got your reply just in time!

Thank goodness.. Doesn't happen often but it does happen.

Then there's a :Trojan horse proxy.FQB

Is that also in recyclers ? Recyclers is safe for now we will clean that up later.

Are you using Internet explorer ? Firefox and a few other browsers will not support Active x.
If you are using intenet explorer try this .

Let's check your IE settings and see if we can get an online scan going.
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click on Default Level and click Ok
  • Click on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Check that Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting is set to Enabled or Prompt
    • Check that Run ActiveX controls and plugins is Enabled
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • Check that Active Scripting is set to Enabled
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Open a new IE window and try to run the online scan.

Let me know if that helped. If so please post the log.
Hi bob4. Redone the IE settings as instructed and still the same. It seems to load the activeX but the final window is incomplete. I copied and pasted to word and found a huge amount of missing text etc which cannot be scrolled from the kaspersky window. ????? Regards.
Found a solution. I reduced the text size in the window and it gave me the accept/decline buttons. However I now have a message "Failed to load Kaspersky Online Scanner ActiveX control! You must have administrative rights on this computer; you also must have the IE security settings to the Medium level. EXIT. "Now what? Have I done something wrong?
Is this your computer. Do you have admin rights ?
To check.
click..start>control Panel>user accounts.. Your logon name there should say computer administrator. If not and this is your machine try this.

From that window click

Click your logon name> change account type. click computer administrator.

If that doesn't work try this one:

Download and run Sysclean
  • Create a folder on your desktop called Sysclean.
  • Go to http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp and download sysclean package to the folder you made.
  • Go to http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp and download the Virus Pattern File (Official Pattern Release) to your desktop.
This file will be called lptXXX.zip (XXX represents the version number)
  • Unzip lptXXX.zip and you'll get the file lpt$vpn.XXX. Read here how to unzip/extract properly.
  • Move the lpt$vpn.XXX to the Sysclean-folder you created on your desktop.
  • Open the sysclean-folder and doubleclick sysclean.com.
  • Check: "Automatically clean or delete detected files".
  • Click scan.
Open your sysclean-folder and copy and paste the contents of sysclean.log in your next reply.
I checked user accounts and I am the system admin. Finally got it to work by closing AVG and ZONEALARM. Scan clear but log attached anyway. Also AVG vault contents and new HJT log. Good luck. I'm wondering if I deleted the AVG vault list would that work or is it too simple?

Still don't see anything.
But there is something that needs attention.

Be sure before you do this that you run XP updates for all critical updates.

When thats done you can go to add/remove programs and uninstall this:

Metafile Vulnerability HotFix 1.4..
That's an old fix that microsoft has taken care of now in their updates.

Lets get one more scan to be sure.

Download GMER's application from here

or

Here

Save it to your desktop.

Create a new folder in c: drive called Gmer

Click on Start then My Computer then double click Local Disk C:

Now right click anywhere on the open window and choose New then Folder Type in GMER and hit the Enter key.

Unzip the GMER zip file by double clicking on the desktop icon and save it to the GMER folder you just made.

Now Navigate to that folder (Gmer)
and double click the GMER.exe file

Click the Rootkit tab and click the Scan button.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT use the computer while the scan is in progress.

Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.
Once done, click the Copy button.
This will copy the results to your clipboard.
Paste the results in your next reply.

If you're having problems with running GMER.exe, try it in safe mode.
This tools works in safe mode. Other rootkitrevealers don't.

Please post the contents of that log.
