I'm back… This same instance happened to me a few weeks ago (less than that) and I received some great help here :D ! Unfortunately, my comp is freezing up again, many times when the screen saver has begun running (for how long I don't know). I have aired out my comp. in hopes that dust may have been causing some problem, and no virus scans have found anything thus far (I'm running NIS 2007)… I do know that I have about 40 processes running in the background/task manager, but don't know which are necessary and which are not, nor do I know how to turn off certain processes so they don't begin at start up (if any are problems)… The HJT log follows; can someone help  ?

Thanks in advance for any and all help:

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

Look in your Add-Remove programs for this program and uninstall it.
MaxSpeed

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {120E090D-9136-4b78-8258-F0B44B4BD2AC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ms.exe (file missing)

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

Look for and delete this file,
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ms.exe

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Thank You Atribune

Post a new HJT log please
Hello;
MaxSpeed doesn't appear in Add/Remove programs, but it does show up under the "files" tab when I open internet explorer.

Also, before I fix

I can tell you that it pertains to an online grading program through my school district… Should I continue with all prior instructions? One more thing:

"the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis"; I am also running NIS (Norton) 2007. Should I close it before running HJT?

Thanks for the input.

This is fine, as long as you know what it is and use it. With any of the 016 entries, you will just be prompted to download it again next time you use the site. So keep it.

Just don't have any open windows , the programs that are running in the background like Norton are fine.

Let me see this report also. Because Maxspeed is Ad Ware and we want to make sure its gone.

Open Hijackthis
  • Go to Misc Tools> Open Uninstall Manager.
  • Click on Save List.
  • The list will open in Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste the List into this thread
Okay, HJT log followed by the save list:

There you go! :D

40 Processes running in Task Manager is normal, most of them are required by windows and the rest are related to the programs you installed like your Anti Virus that runs in the background.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

This entry is taking me nowhere, fix it with HJT
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://cgi.verizon.net/bookmarks/bmredir.a…mp;bm=ho_search

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 This is outdated, uninstall it via the Add - Remove Programs in the Control Panel and use the links in my signature at the bottom of this page and download and install the latest version 1.4

If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

  • During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
  • Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
  • Then to Updates Search for Updates
  • If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
  • Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
  • Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
  • Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
  • Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
  • Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
  • Let it scan your system
  • Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.
  • Reboot your computer.

This is totally your call but eMule has been known to cause problems , if it was my system I would uninstall it.

IE Host <– this is related to Maxspeed and is adware, I suggest you uninstall this program also.

You can try running another great free cleaner.

If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < – After it scans your system, when you click on the Fix button and it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

The rest of your log looks fine

Let me know if any of this helped, if not we can run a few online scanners to see if they pick anything up.
Comp. froze up 3 times while trying to run HJT so I could fix "R1 - HKCU…". Fourth attempt successful! Uninstalled Spybot 1.3 and installed Spybot 1.4, scanned as directed and fixed problems. Downloaded and ran CCleaner… and backuped registry, restarted computer… It has managed to freeze up twice; once while it was just sitting, and once while I was surfing the internet (searching for car parts stores in my area)… I'm at a loss  Something with on-board memory, still some unknown virus, something mechanical wearing out (processor, etc.)??? Any more ideas? Thanks,
A few things you may try,

Take caution to ground yourself and take out the memory and reseat them , they could have come loose. Just hold them by the ends, don't touch any part of the circuit boards on them at all.

  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Run this free online scan from Trendmicro, it will give you a report, save it for me to see. If it finds things and removes them, run the scan again to make sure its all gone.

Please run Trend Micro House Call
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • Under "Browser plug-in" Installing and using Housecall kernel, click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a prompt to install the ActiveX, click install.
  • If you are taken back to the main page, click Launching HouseCall>> button again.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
  • When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.

Let me see the Housecall log and a new HJT log please.
:( Can't get through any of the scans… Comp freezes up 5 - 10 minutes into any of them. I also tried a scan at symantec.com and the same thing happened… Here is a copy of the latest HJT log though… See anything?

ysipuewj,

I am still not looking at anything bad on your log. Are you able to boot into Safemode without your system locking up? If you can, download and install this program and run it in Safemode, it will clean a lot of bad entries if you have any and also will produce a log that I need to see, one or more of the entries in the log may point to a bad program that is not showing up on your HJT log.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Another option is to run Blacklight , this is a quick scan so maybe you can get through this one.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

If your unable to run either of these scans and post a log from them, I am going to refer you to a windows support forum that deals with hardware issues which this may be.

Ken :D
Downloaded/extracted AVG. Comp would not start in safe mode using F8 method (would only start in normal mode), followed tutorial and used "msconfig" mode to start in safe mode… WILL NO LONGER START TO WINDOWS!!! Comp stops at a black screen with "We appologise for the inconveinence… please hilight your choice" The choices are start in: safe mode safe mode with networking safe mode with command prompt last known good configuration and start windows normally None work, each just brings me back to this screen… I'm working off another computer right now. In the process of each start up I can get into setup (using delete key), BIOs setting utility (using Control H); I haven't changed anything in these, but am able to get to them… Please help! :o
Sorry for the delay in responding, I was away for the weekend with no internet access.

Your HJT log is clean of any malware, you have a serious windows problem if you cant boot to safemode, or back into normal windows. Why booting to safemode the way you did caused your system not to start is beyond me. That shouldn't have effected it at all. There is some underlying problems that are really preventing you from doing anything.

Your options are to do a System Repair by booting to the recovery console. You will need your windows XP disk, it has to be your disk for your system. Here are the instructions for doing a repair through the recovery console.
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=138

If that does not work, your second option is to do a different type of repair and that is to bypass the recovery console and proceed just like you where going to reinstall windows except at this point you chose the repair option. What this does is reinstalls windows right on top of the current version and this will reinstall any files or what have you that is messing up your system. You will need your windows XP CD for this. It has to be your disk and the one for that computer, if you use someone else's, the product key will not match your current installation and it won't let windows start. If you don't have the windows CD, you have no recourse but to call the manufacturer of your system and have them send you one, you will need the tag number off of the label that may be affixed to your system. If your system is not to old, there support team may run you through the repair.
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Whatever option you choose you will have to boot from the windows disk, if it won't boot you will have to enter the setup utility for your system that may or may not flash on the screen when you turn on your system, you usually press the F1 or F2 key at startup. This will take you to the BIOS setup and you will have snoop around and look for the Boot Menu, follow the instructions at the bottom of the screen and make sure that your CD ROM is the first boot device, your Hard Disk is second and your floppy is 3rd if you have one.

Good luck, if you can't get anywhere by contacting there tech support or the repair feature doesn't help, let me know and I can direct you to some windows support sites that deal with this on a regular basis.

Another point to consider also is that when you get that screen with all the options that you have gotten, it could also be caused by a hardware failure , like your hard disk, memory and such.

Ken :D
Thanks for the reply Ken. Looks like I may have some work ahead of me… <_< I think I'll start by making sure all the connections are fully seated… The system does come up to the color Microsoft Logo before returning to the aforementioned black screen, so I suppose the Windows OS is still on the system as that (the logo) wouldn't be a feature of the dos system (correct?). The system was originally Win 98 and later updated to XP Pro, so I'm not sure if the disk (if I can find it) was a "start-up" disk. I guess I'll find out… This may take a few days, but I'll keep you posted. Thanks.
