Hi Guys, a freind of mine told me to come here to try get this problem solved.

I got hit by an auto installer a couple of weeks back. The one where it prompts for the office cd. I usually catch it before it gets to far into it, but this time I was looking at other pages at same time and it hit me.

Nortons, Ad Aware and Windows Defender all seem to find it and say they removed it, but then 2 or 3 days later I get hit by it again and go thru the whole process over again. Its never gotten to the point where it says I have to go by their software to remove it, so I assume my programs caught it before it got too far into its installation.

Every now and then after nortons or one of the others deletes it, my desktop changes to a blue screen, but that seems to be the only affect it has. Nortons always says I need to reboot as the same user to complete the process, but when I do, it gets as far as the black screen on restart and just hangs forever, so I have to manually close down the system then restart it again.

So I got the HJT and rebooted again since nortons had found it again last nite before I came here. Then Ive ran HJT and here is the log.

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named:
c:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post:

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Hi LD, below are the logs.

I was thinking that if this doesnt find anything I may have to wait a couple of days for it to try and run again and instead of letting nortons or windows fix it, just leave it and then go thru this process.

Here's the logs.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi again LD, I removed that file and rebooted. When it came back up, my old active desktop was showing, then after a bit of time as the icons loaded, the blue screen came back up. Other than that the system is running as it was before the reboot.

I also came back here in firefox to try something out.

Here is the log from as soon as I get rebooted. After it I will pst what happened when I loaded IE

Ok so then I thought ID load IE since its been a few restarts since the last time spysherrif tried to load. As soon as IE opened nortons popped up saying Home page alert protection with the following details

Original Addess: http://www.fleshlight.com.au/forums/index.php (which is my own site and what it is supposed to be)
Blocked address: http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?p…&ar=msnhome
Process Name: REGEDIT.com
Location: C:\sUBs\REGEDIT.com

Guess since thats from microsoft it should be fine anyways
Yes that's OK. It was part of the fix we ran. It can change the homepage back to msn.

You need to update SunJava.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the [external image: Posted Image] icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on 6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Once installed you can test to see that it is in fact installed

You can remove any programs I had you install

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

Safe Surfing. :D
