Hello to one and all and thank you in advance for any and all help you might be able to give me.
I came across your forum when searching a suspect functions etc.

I think it was C:\\winnt\system32\jvale.dll
This led me to the http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=42488 forum topic. Where I noted that many of the symptoms were the same.

I have essentially followed the preparations up to rebooting in safe mode. Previously I have tried a number of memory test and spybot style programs with mixed to poor success. Is it a good idea to run Hijackthis. in safe mode? I am not totally ignorant but I do know that I do not know enough to resolve this problem in the most elegant and effective manner.

Currently I am researching and communicating through my Mac. and have the problematic computer offline and sitting in safe mode.

I look forward to hearing from any and all.
I realize this was a improper post… I would delete it if I knew how. I am sorry for not reading more first but this issue is beyond the pale of my experience. Currently following self help instructions etc. Very sick computer. Very little sleep. Getting desperate as normal work is backing up beyond what the dam can hold.
Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

You need to posta HijackThis log

you can get a complete installer that installs HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis, making an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut from http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HJTsetup.exe.

Click on the link and select Save, save it to your desktop and double click HJTsetup.exe.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here please use the [Add Reply] button below.
Thank you for your reply! I will do so hopefully later today. Before receiving it, I started following the self-help recs and addaware seemed to work though PKzip (which I think is part of the problem) kept trying to send it to the wrong folders. Using Freezip now. It ran and seemed fine. (Found and cleaned a bunch of stuff) Spybot which was on it already and in previous attempts to fix this problem would either say it couldn't fix the problems found, couldn't find any problems, or there were no updates… Or it would totally freeze the system forcing me to reboot via powercycle. So tried Spy-bot again… With a fresh install as the old one didn't seem to work. It wouldn't self-update but I worked around it by downloading the most current zip files. This seemed to work and was scanning when it did the freeze up. At this point the dam at the other office broke and I had to turn the dang thing off and leave. So tonight or early tomorrow morning I'll get back on it. Should I run Hijackthis. In Normal mode (not safe) with the machine offline and all anti-virus Norton Go-back etc. disabled? Thanks Again for your help as this one is kicking my butt and making my life a living hell.

Should I run Hijackthis. In Normal mode (not safe) with the machine offline and all anti-virus Norton Go-back etc. disabled

I need the HJT log from Normal mode. Leave everything enabled. Doesn't matter to me if it's online or not
Here is the logfile. The current state of the system is as it stands halfway between where they had it and the results of my saw-bonesish attempts to understand and fix the problem. I appreciate your help and your very articulate instructions. Also I apologize for failing to reply as I said I would. This is the earliest I was able to return to this crisis as others were hogging all my "personal bandwidth."

Respectfully,

Po.

I thought I should add that as a part of my butchery I have denied all user access for a number of programs Such as Kodak Easyshare, PKZip, and a few other suspect folders that seemed to be part of the problem. If it aids or saves you time and effort I can restore back to a previous state. Probably. Again thankyou, Po.
I suggest you do this:

Everything seems fine. Though I have not tried to do much of course. Running IE, Virus Updates, checking mail, defragging, or what have you.

The task I most need to do is get the USB drivers etc. working so that this system can be backed up. Via the Maxtor.

After that reinstalling Adobe reader.
Well got a late start on it this morning. They were calves being born as it was raining..
Last night/early this morning…
  • I ran a couple of scans and updates for AVG. It found quite a bit. I saved the reports.
  • Then tried to install Adobe Reader. This install was interrupted/failed with "The windows installer being unavailable."
  • Threw in the towel for the evening as I was exhausted.
This morning just after 0900 CST I got back at it.
  • I ran a couple of scans with Ad-Aware, several items were identified and dealt with by following the instructions.
  • Then processed an available update for A-A, repeated and received a clean scan. (saved these reports as well)
  • Ran the updater for AVG and and downloaded most current.
  • Started Full Systems Scan…which ran until total systems lock forced me to power down.
  • Gnashed teeth, tore robes, and wailed in despair.
  • Posted here.
I am going to run Hijackthis. and post here unless instructed otherwise. If you would care to see any of the other reports or something I haven't thought of I will do that as well of course.
This is the log after bringing the system back up after it locked up.
Again thank you for all of your help.
Po.

In an attempt to do all I could until someone with more wisdom tells me what I should have done. I was going back through the self-help procedures. A-A runs and shows only minor issues. Though it says no updates available. (log available) AVG - Locks up and also says no updates available. Spybot- Said no updates were available and when run got as far as: "Running bot check (29839/57569: Smitfraud-C.)" and had found DyFuCA and ISearchTech PowerScan before also totally locking the system.
* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
