Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Go to where you currently have HJT installed and delete the whole folder.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Run this system cleaner

Download and Install CCleaner
If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
* Click on Run Cleaner
Tutorial for CCleaner

Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories > System Tools> Disk Defragmenter.
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to help speed up your system. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

  • Click on My Computer
  • Then Right click on C:\
  • Then click on Properties
  • You should have at least 40% free space.
  • If not, then you need to uninstall some programs you are not using to free up disk space.

The rest of your log looks fine
Hi again, I followed all instructions after running a new HJT scan and 'fix checked' all of the entries listed by Ken545 but the following entries did not appear on the new scan, so i could not fix them

I'm not sure why these entries did not appear, so if anyone can help, I would appreciate it

Thank you

Keep in mind that slow computers are not always caused by a virus or malware. We can run another scan with AVG Anti Spyware that will clean out most bad entries if there are any, but most important is that I need to see the report.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Let me see the AVG log and a New HJT log please. It also would help me if you could describe the error messages that you are getting.
Hi Ken545, the problems i have been experiencing were things like:
my internet sessions becoming slow all of a sudden, so i would close internet explorer and attempt to re open it, only it would not re open unless i rebooted (this would happen every now and again)
Also, on opening my zone alarm internet security suite, i noticed one day that the skin was the old style windows skin and upon opening it the next day, it had changed back to the usual xp skin (which i thought was very strange).
Also, i had an error message telling me that my computer had recovered from a serious error which may have been caused by overheated hardware or a virus.

And then today before i followed your last set of instructions, my zone alarm anti virus/spyware did a scheduled scan and and found:Trojan Wni.32.peflog.30 Path HKEY_Local_Machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\uninstall\hijackthis

I took no action, because i was about to follow the instructions that you gave me, and assumed that it would be found again by AVG anti spyware in safe mode, but Avg did not find it (I have since deleted this Trojan with ZA anti spyware so hopefully that's the end of it). I have posted the AVG log and new hjt log you requested below

I hope i did everything correctly, Thank you again for your assistance
dom1978 :D

Lets try a couple of things.

  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

What I would do is to run Housecall and if it finds anything and removes it, run it again and make sure it comes up clean. If it finds something it can't remove, please let me know what it was.

Please run Trend Micro House Call
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • Under "Browser plug-in" Installing and using Housecall kernel, click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a prompt to install the ActiveX, click install.
  • If you are taken back to the main page, click Launching HouseCall>> button again.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
  • When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.
Hi Ken545, just a quick question abour your last reply before i start, my xp came pre installed on my laptop. I have a product recovery dvd rom and a tools and utillities disc which also came in the package. Would either of these discs contain my windows xp? I'm not sure so i'd better be sure before i proceed.
dom1978,

Just run the program without the disk, most manufactures put those files on your system in lieu of giving you the actual disk and configure the registry to find them, not sure if yours is set up that way. If not, you will need the windows xp disk, not the recovery disk. If it asks you for the disk, than you may not be able to run that program.
Ken545

I ran sfc /scannow and was not asked for a disc.

I ran trend micro house call and followed the instructions you gave me, and when the scan started, the message 'an error occured while trying to transfer data from the internet! Do you want house call to try resending the required files?' I clicked OK but the message immediately reappears every time, so instead I click Cancel which which made the message disappear after a few attempts after which the 'Scanning and Cleaning Complete' page comes up and tells me that House call did not find any potential threats

Is that cool?

I'd like to thank you for the time you took in helping me with this problem

Your very welcome

Malware Complaints
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
